Much f my wrk as a cach includes helping peple make an imprtant decisin, such as “If I’m at a crssrads in my career, which path shuld I fllw?” “If I’m cnsidering ffers, which ne shuld I accept?”
Difficult decisins like these remind me f a cmment made by Sctt McNealy, CEO f Sun Micrsystems fr years during a lecture while I was in a business schl at Stanfrd. He was asked hw he made decisins and respnded, “It’s imprtant t make gd decisins. But I spend much less time and energy wrrying abut making the right decisin and much mre time and energy ensuring that any decisin I make turns ut right.”
In fact, befre we make any decisins, particularly thse difficult nes, we’re anxius t fcus n identifying the “best” ptin because f the risk f being “wrng”. But a side effect f that mindset (观念模式)is that we pay t much attentin t the mment f chice and lse sight f everything that fllws. It’s what happens next that finally determines whether a given decisin was “right”.
Anther aspect f this mindset is that ur fcus n making the “right” decisin can easily lead t paralysis (麻痹), because the ptins we’re chsing amng are s difficult t rank in the first place. Hw can we definitively determine in advance what career path will be “the best”, r what jb ffer we shuld accept? Obviusly, we can’t.
Fcusing n the effrt after ur decisin nt nly helps us succeed, but als reminds us that we play a rle in every utcme. Our cntrl shuld be in ur day-t- day activities rather than in ur ne-time decisin.
    27. Which f the fllwing abut Sctt McNealy is TRUE?
    A. He desn’t think making gd decisins is very imprtant fr him.
    B. He tries his best t make his decisin turn ut right in the end.

    D. He nly fcuses n the prcess rather than the utcme.
    28. Mst peple feel anxius when making an imprtant decisin because they ______.
    A. wrry abut the undesired result it may bring abut
    B. can’t find a gd cach t give them advice
    C. have n idea f what t expect.
    D. dn’t knw what t d next
    29. What is the text mainly abut?
    A. Believe in yurself and chse what yu want.
    B. Stp wrrying abut making the right decisin.
    C. Making the right decisin is very imprtant.
    D. Never help thers make the right decisin.
    D
The Stanfrd marshmallw (棉花糖)test was riginally dne by psychlgist Walter Mischel in the late 1960s. Children aged fur t six at a nursery schl were placed in a rm. A single sugary treat (甜食), selected by the child, was placed n a table. Each child was tld if they waited fr 15 minutes befre eating the treat, they wuld be given a secnd treat. Then they were left alne in the rm. Fllw-up studies with the children later in life shwed a cnnectin between an ability t wait lng enugh t get a secnd treat and varius frms f success.
As adults, in fact, we face “the marshmallw test” every day. We’re nt tempted (诱惑)by sugary treats, but by ur cmputers, phnes, and tablets — all the devices that cnnect us t the glbal delivery system fr varius types f infrmatin that d t us what marshmallws d t preschlers.
We are tempted by sugary treats because ur ancestrs lived in a calrie-pr wrld, and ur brains develped an ability t respnd t these treats that reflected their value — a feeling f reward and satisfactin. But as we’ve reshaped the wrld arund us, greatly reducing the cst and effrt invlved in getting calries, we still have the same brains we had thusands f years ag, and this mismatch is at the heart f why s many f us struggle t resist (抑制)tempting fds that we knw we shuldn’t eat.
A similar prcess is at wrk in ur respnse t infrmatin. Our frmative (发展的)envirnment as a species was infrmatin-pr, s ur brains develped a system that prized new infrmatin. But glbal cnnectivity has greatly changed ur infrmatin envirnment. We are nw cnstantly bmbarded (轰炸)with new infrmatin. Therefre, just as we need t be mre thughtful abut ur intake f calries, we als need t be mre thughtful abut ur intake f infrmatin, and refuse t accept the temptatin f the mental “junk fd” in rder t manage ur time mst effectively.
    30. Accrding t paragraph 3, there is a mismatch between ___________.
    A. the calrie-pr wrld and ur wn desire fr fd
    B. the shrtage f sugar and ur nutritinal needs
    C. the wrld with rich fd and ur unchanged brains
    D. the attractive fds and ur effrts t keep fit
    31. The wrd “prized” in Paragraph 4 prbably means “________”.
    A. valued B. gt
    C. gave D. prcessed
    32. What des the authr suggest readers d?
    A. Use diverse infrmatin surces.
    B. Be selective infrmatin cnsumers.
    C. Absrb new infrmatin readily.
    D. Prtect the infrmatin envirnment.
    33. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
    A. The Later, the Better B. The Sad Truth abut Early Humans
    C. Eat Less, Read Mre D. The Marshmallw Test fr Adults
