The researchers fund that the students walked mre slwly when there was green plants present in the experiment, and their heart rate increased. They wuld spend less time lking at the grund and mre time bserving their surrundings. These results indicate a pleasurable experience. Yet this study shwed that urban male sng sparrws prvided mre care fr their yung,” says Dr Samuel Lane, lead authr f the study. “Against ur expectatins, we fund that they visited nests mre ften and were mre successful parents than the males in the cuntryside.”
The researchers carried ut their studies at six sites acrss suthwest Virginia, USA, acrss fur breeding (繁殖) seasns. They fund that the high survival rate f their chicks was subject t many factrs. Nt nly did male sparrws visit their nests mre ften, but they als began feeding chicks earlier in the day. Despite the challenges f being a city bird, hatching success was bserved t be higher in urban habitats. And even thugh brd parasitism, ne species laying eggs in the nest f anther, is typically higher in urban areas, the researchers bserved that rates f nest predatin, the act f ther animals eating eggs r yung birds, were lwer, further cntributing t the verall nesting success f these sparrws.
Lane said, “Our study adds t grwing evidence that certain species f sngbirds even benefit frm living in urban envirnments when there is enugh green space fr them t find fd and nest lcatins.”
