I vlunteered t g t Guatemala with an eyeglass team frm Internatinal Relief Teams — an rganizatin I have supprted in ther ways fr many years.
Our team went t a small twn in Guatemala, San Augustin. We set up ur tables and packages f pre-made glasses in the dirty curtyard f a clinic, put up the Snellen chart (an eye chart) n a wall, and began ur wrk.
Yung and ld peple came frm many f the surrunding twns. Mst had never received an eye exam befre. They waited fr hurs patiently in the sun, never cmplaining. If we culd help them ut, their thankfulness fr a simple pair f glasses was verwhelming. Sme nly left with eye drps r sunglasses, and even these peple expressed their gratitude sincerely. All f them were very generus with blessings and smiles. We heard ver and ver frm peple wh knew their eyes needed help but they had nt gne t a dctr because it was t expensive, r had nt gt the glasses they needed fr the same reasn.
It’s s easy t verlk hw much difference the vlunteers’ small actins can make t the lives f peple in Guatemala. The glasses in my cuntry are s easily available, but t peple in Guatemala, they are nt.
As thse wh culd give them a hand, we watched their lives change. What a gift sight is — and what a difference being able t see clearly makes! Here, we’d like yu t jin us and take actin t help peple in need. And every day, thse actins change lives. N actin is t small; n actin is ever wasted.

One incnvenient truth fr the clean energy industry is the undeniable fact that wind turbines (涡轮机) kill birds. Researchers say smarter turbines culd dramatically cut the tll.
The American Bird Cnservancy claims that at least ne millin bird deaths as a result f wind turbines a year in the US alne is likely t be an underestimate. That’s substantially less than the estimated 980 millin birds a year that die crashing int buildings, r the 1.4 t 3.7 billin per year killed by dmestic cats. But it’s still an unacceptable number, and a prblem that needs t be addressed— because a fully green energy netwrk will need mre and mre turbines ver the cming decades.
Researchers at SINTEF and the Nrwegian Centre believe they have an idea that culd help in a lt f cases. The idea — knwn as SKARV— is fairly simple: each turbine will have cameras fitted, capable f sptting birds flying directly int the path f the rtrs (螺旋桨). Sftware will autmatically calculate their predicted path, and if it lks like they’re in danger f being hit, the system will send cntrl signals t slw the rtrs dwn.
In simulatins (模拟), the system is able t avid the vast majrity f crashes. This, f curse, desn’t describe all situatins. Fr example, if a yung, inexperienced bird appraches a turbine displaying irregular flight behavir, it will nt be pssible t predict exactly where it will be a few secnds later. Predictin is als mre difficult if several birds apprach at the same time.
Sme researchers argue that birds are learning t avid turbines vluntarily. But if mre than a millin birds a year haven’t gt the mem yet, it’s still a prblem wrth slving. We lk frward t hearing hw trials prgress.
8. What des the underlined phrase “cut the tll” in paragraph I prbably mean?

C. Lwer csts.D. Prevent errrs.
9. What can be inferred abut bird death caused by wind turbines in paragraph 2?
A. It tps the list f bird deaths.B. It calls fr immediate actin.
C. It has been prperly slved.D. It shws prgress in technlgy.
10. Hw des SKARV make wind turbines intelligent?
A By keeping a cnstant speed.B. By recrding birds’ behavir.
C. By predicting ptential danger.D. By sending warnings t birds.
11. What is paragraph 4 mainly abut?
A. Challenges presented in simulatins.B. Features f birds’ flying patterns.
C. Examples f SKARV’s applicatinD. Appraches t crash avidance.

T explre thse remains, the UCSD team wiped the surface f each vlunteer’s phne with a cttn swab(药棉签). The scientists als swabbed each persn’s right hand.
Then the researchers cmpared the chemicals fund n each cell phne. The scientists discvered as many f the mlecules as they culd. They then cmpared these t a database f chemicals. Pieter Drrestein. a UCSD pharmaceutical chemist, had helped set up that database a few years earlier, which cntains varius substances, including spices, caffeine and medicines.
Traces f anywhere frm hundreds t thusands f different mlecules turned up n each phne. The mlecules reflected what had been in the bdy, and what each persn had handled befre tuching the phne. Frm all these mlecules, Buslimani says. “We culd tell if a persn is likely female, uses high-end csmetics, dyes her hair, drinks cffee, prefers beer ver wine r likes spicy fd.”
Plice already use mlecular analyses t lk fr traces f explsives r illegal drugs. T date, Drrestein says. he’s never heard f plice using phne remains t narrw dwn behaviral clues t search fr a suspect. But detectives might ne day use such data t track dwn smene wh left a phne behind at a crime scene.
