Back in 1958, I was crazy abut the Nrflk and Western 746. The smth bullet- nse engine with its range and yellw lines and shiny streamlined black tender (车厢) seemed t have cast a spell n me.
Tgether the engine and tender measured a little shy f 2 feet—enrmus by the ty train standards f the day、 Even better, the 746 had a wrking headlight and smker, and its tender sang high.
Unfrtunately, the amazing 746 als had an amazing price—$ 50, equal t abut $ 450 tday. That was far mre than my grandfather culd affrd. Instead, I had t be cntent with his little Linel plastic, which was SIX INCHES shrter than the 746 and had n headlight, n smker r n sund! But that was the best that my grandfather culd give me at that time.
Years passed, and I was in my 30s. Cmplicated sund systems and cmputer cntrls dminated ty trains. I never gave a lk. My interest in ty trains, I firmly believed, had faded, s did my admiratin fr the 746, since my grandfather was nt with me. The 746 was never called t mind. On an rdinary day, hwever, I happened t see the 746 utside the windw f a train shw. Just ne lk, I culd nt lk away. Childhd memries that I tried t hide in the depths f my heart raced thrugh my mind, happy r sad.
That day I tk the 746 hme and placed it in the centre f the rm, and let my childhd dream sing its way arund me. Smke rse ut frm the engine and the sft sng sunded frm its tender. It seemed as if I culd see the sft light in grandfather’s eyes and hear his cheerful laughter.

Rbert Chmielewski has had quadriplegia (四肢瘫痪) since his teens. Sensrs implanted (植入) in his brain read his thughts t cntrl tw rbtic arms, which helps him t perfrm daily tasks. Nw he can use ne rbtic arm t cntrl a knife and the ther a frk.
Mdern technlgy can reach inside smene’s head and pull ut what he is thinking. Maybe he intends t mve a rbtic arm r type smething n a cmputer screen. Such thught-cntrlled devices can help peple wh aren’t able t mve r perfrm different tasks and prmte the well-being f the disabled.
Decding (解码) thught usually requires placing sensrs directly n r in smene’s brain. Thse implanted sensrs can catch the electrical signals passing between the persn’s brain cells, r neurns. Such signals carry messages that allw brains t think, feel and cntrl the bdy.
Using brain implants, researchers have picked up electrical signals in the brain linked t certain wrds r letters. This has allwed brain implants t transfrm thughts int text r speech n a cmputer. Likewise, brain implants have transfrmed imagined handwriting int text n a screen. Implanted sensrs have even allwed scientists t turn the signals they caught that are assciated with a sng in smene’s head int real music.
In a recent study, scientists decded full stries frm peple’s brains using MRI scans (磁共振成像扫描). This did nt require any brain implants. But building the thught decder did require many hurs f brain scans fr each persn. What’s mre, the system nly wrked n the persn whse brain scans helped build it and nly when that persn was willing t have their mind read.
S devices that might let smene secretly read yur mind frm acrss the rm are still a lng, lng way ff. Still, it’s clear that mind-reading tech is getting mre advanced. As it des, scientists are thinking hard abut what it wuld mean t live in a wrld where nt even the inside f yur head is cmpletely private.
28.What des the text begin with?
    A.A suggestin.B.A cmparisn.C.An argument.D.An example.
29.What is explained in the text?
A.What principles a thught decder shuld fllw.

C.What’s used t catch signals passing thrugh the brain.
D.Hw rbtic arms are designed t satisfy different needs.

    A.Cncerned.B.Cnfident.C.Dubtful.D.Indifferent.
31.What is mainly talking abut in the text?

Warming seas acrss the glbe are endangering cral reefs, a key ecsystem that supprts marine life t live and thrive. As a pssible way t save them frm extinctin, scientists have recently frzen and revived grups f adult crals fr the first time, accrding t a recent reprt.
Freezing bilgical materials, r “crypreserving” them, refers t keeping them in a deep freeze fr lng perids withut affecting the cell’s viability(活性 ), accrding t the Science Times Website.
This methd usually cls them t very lw temperatures, cmmnly t-196℃. Since cells wuld nrmally die at such a lw temperature due t the frmatin f ice inside, scientists need t mnitr the freezing rate and chse the freezing medium carefully.
Researchers in the US experimented with freezing pea-sized pieces f a cmmn cral in Hawaii. After remving the micrbes n the crals, they sealed the crals in metal cntainers filled with a chemical slutin that partially dehydrated (脱水) them and helped cntrl ice grwth.
When the crals reached a temperature f arund—200℃, the remaining water in the crals slidified int a glassy frm. The crals were still alive, with their life- driving functins becming extremely slw, After being crypreserved fr a few minutes, the researchers pulled the crals ut and placed them in warm water. In tw minutes, they started cnsuming xygen—a sign f them staying alive.
Previusly, researchers had already successfully crypreserved cral larvae (幼虫), accrding t a study in 2018. Hwever, the larvae can nly be cllected when crals lay eggs, which happens just a few nights each year. “That’s putting a lt f eggs in ne basket,” US marine scientist Liza Rger tld Science News.
This breakthrugh ffers mre hpe t the wrld’s crals, said Rger. Hwever, there’s mre wrk t be dne. A few days after thawing (解冻), the crals became “stressed ut” frm the prcess and were killed by the bacteria they nrmally live in harmny with. The researchers are wrking n using antibitics t help them survive fr a lnger perid f time.
32.What is the purpse f the recent study?
A.T bring dead crals back t life.B.T freeze and revive cral larvae.
C.T find a way t preserve crals.D.T study the cnditins f cral grwth.
33.What happened t the crals when they were crypreserved?
A.They died fr the time being.B.Their life functins slwed dwn.
C.They remained alive and unchanged.D.They fed n micrbes in the cntainers.
34.What des Rger think abut crypreserving cral larvae?
    A.It is nt a reliable slutin.B.It needs a large number f eggs.
C.It hlds prmise fr restring crals.D.It requires verly expensive technlgy.
35.What issue d the researchers still need t apprach?
A.Finding a suitable freezing medium.B.Identifying the bacteria n the crals.
C.Expanding the cllectin f cral larvae.D.Maintaining the crals’ health after thawing.
