After a week, the birds’ singing muscles lst half f their strength. Three weeks later, they were back t the same level when they were juveniles (and never had sung befre. When Adam played ne f the male’s sngs fr a grup f female birds, six ut f nine preferred the sng that came frm a male wh had been using his singing muscles daily.
Adam’s cnclusin is that sngbirds need t exercise their singing muscles t prduce tp-perfrmance sng. If they dn’t sing, they lse perfrmance, and their sngs get less attractive t females, which is bad.
