Agricultural scientists in Switzerland have demnstrated the lng-term effect f rganic farming methds. Organic farms use n man-made chemicals t increase crps r cntrl insects and disease. Chien-Shiung Wu was a Chinese-American nuclear physicist wh has been recgnized as “the First Lady f Physics” and “Queen f Nuclear Research”. Her research cntributins include wrk n the Manhattan Prject and the Wu experiment.
Brn in a small twn near Shanghai, China, n May 31, 1912, Chien-Shiung Wu was the nly daughter f three children. Educatin was imprtant t the Wu family, which influenced yung Wu the mst. Her mther, a teacher, and her father, an engineer, encuraged her t pursue science and mathematics frm an early age. She began her study in ne f the first schls funded by her father, and then went t Suzhu Schl. Later she attended Shanghai Gng Xue public schl fr ne year. In 1930, Wu entered Nanjing University, where she first pursued mathematics but quickly switched her majr t physics, inspired by a famus female scientist, Marie Curie. She graduated with tp hnrs at the head f her class with a B．S. degree in 1934.
After graduatin, she went t the University f Califrnia. There she met Prfessr Ernest Lawrence, a later Nbel Prize winner. Wu’s graduate wrk fcused n a highly desirable tpic f that age: uranium fissin (铀裂变) prducts. After cmpleting her Ph. D．in 1940, Wu accepted an ffer frm Princetn University as the first female teacher. In 1944, she jined the Manhattan Prject at Clumbia University.
After leaving the Manhattan Prject in 1945, Wu spent the rest f her career in the Department f Physics at Clumbia. She is best knwn fr cnducting the Wu experiment, the discvery f which resulted in her clleagues Tsung-Da Lee and Chen-Ning Yang winning the 1957 Nbel Prize in Physics, while Wu was nt included.
