Jiang began reading ding Qing Dynasty (1644 — 1911) authr Ca Xueqin’s Dream f the Red Chamber in the secnd l grade, when she did nt even fully understand all the characters. She als lved reading histry and the first histrical bks she read were the Chrnicles f the Eastern Zhu Kingdms, stries that are mre than 2,280 years ld.
In 1996, she wrte her first martial arts nvel Mda Fengyun t entertain herself. In 1997, she bught a cmputer and typed in the manuscript (手稿), but with nwhere t publish, nly family and friends read the bk.
Jiang fcused n wmen, wh were usually vershadwed and presented as simplified characters in Chinese literature, particularly imprtant histrical wmen. She realized that Chinese histrical nvels tended t fcus n emperrs, kings, and generals, and wmen ften featured as vehicles, such as virtuus wives and gd mthers.
Amng the 2, 000 ratings n Duban, a majr review aggregatr (聚合器) in China, nearly 70 percent f readers gave Jiang’s mst famus nvel fur stars r mre ut f five. One reader, nicknamed Yinrendepniang, wh gave the nvel fur stars, cmmented that, “The bk describes the life f China’s first empress dwager (女皇) , thrugh a mix f fictin and histry. It details her jurney frm birth t rule, and hw the changes in her life influenced her, shaping her int a kind yet tricky yet tricky individual. She resists thers’ cntrl ver bk nt nly infrms us abut her path t grwth, but als shws hw a wman can achieve success thrugh her wn effrts.”

In sme parts f the wrld peple are likely t plan fr the future, while in thers peple are mre likely t live in the mment. In sme scieties peple prefer mre persnal space; in thers they are cmfrtable being in clse quarters in public.
There are a number f theries abut where cultural differences between scieties cme frm. In a grwing number f cases, researchers have fund that human culture an be shaped by key features f the envirnments in which peple live.
Eclgy includes basic physical and scial characteristics f the envirnment—such factrs as hw rich a place is in resurces, hw cmmn infectius (传染性的) diseases are, hw heavily ppulated a place is, and hw much threat there is t human safety. Variables like temperature and the availability f water can be key eclgical features.
Fr ver 200 scieties, ur lab at Arizna State University gathered cmprehensive data n nine key features f eclgy— such as rainfall, temperature, infectius disease and natural resurces —and dzens f aspects f human cultural variatin— including values, strength f scial nrms (社会规范), persnality, mtivatin and institutinal characteristics. With this infrmatin, we created the EcCultural Dataset.
Using this dataset, we were able t generate a range f estimates fr just hw much f human cultural variatin can explained by eclgy.
We ran a series f statistical mdels lking at the relatinship between ur eclgical variables and each f the 66 cultural utcmes we tracked. Fr each f the cultural utcmes, we calculated the average amunt f the cultural diversity acrss scieties that was explained by this cmbinatin f nine different eclgical factrs. We fund that nearly 20% f cultural variatin was explained by the cmbinatin f these eclgical features.
Imprtantly, ur statistical estimates take int accunt cmmn issues in crss-cultural research. There will likely be unmeasured similarities between scieties with shared histrical rts and traditins.
Eclgy isn’t the nly reasn peple arund the wrld think and behave differently. But ur wrk suggests that, at least in part, ur envirnments shape ur cultures.
28. Which best explains why peple are cmfrtable being in clse quarters in public?
A. They are friendly t each ther.B. They like staying in public places.
C. They enjy spending time with thers.D. They live in a place with cld temperatures.
29. What d we knw abut the EcCultural Dataset?
A. It’s a cmbinatin f humans and nature.B. It’s a cmbinatin f eclgy and culture
C. It’s a cmparisn between thery and practice.D. It’s a cmparisn between eclgy and culture.
30. What did the authr s lab want t find ut?
A. Where cultural differences cme frm.B. Whether eclgical features affect culture.
C. Hw strng the eclgy-culture cnnectin is.D. Why cultural differences between scieties exist.
31. What is the cnclusin f the authr’s study?
A. Shared traditins lead t cultural similarities.
B. There are cultural differences between scieties.
C. Cultures are shaped by the envirnments peple live in.
D. Cultural differences partly cme frm eclgical factrs.
D
Researchers say they’ve used cutting-edge gravitatinal wave research t cast new light n a mystery — a 2000-year-ld cmputer, the Antikythera mechanism fund in shipwreck.
Well ver a century after its discvery, researchers at the University f Glasgw say they’ve used statistical mdeling techniques, riginally designed t analyze gravitatinal waves — ripples in spacetime caused by majr events in the universe such as tw black hles cmbining —t suggest that the Antikythera mechanism was likely used t track the Greek lunar year. In shrt, it’s a fascinating cllisin between mdern-day science and the mysteries f an ancient artifact.
In a 2021 paper, researchers fund that previusly discvered and regularly spaced hles in a “calendar ring” were marked t describe the “mtins f the sun, mn, and all five planets knwn in ancient Greeks and hw they were displayed at the frnt as an ancient Greek universe.” Nw, in a new study published in the Official Jurnal f the British Hrlgical Institute, University f Glasgw gravitatinal wave researcher Graham Wan and researchassciate Jseph Bayley suggest that the ring was likely perfrated (打孔)with 354 hles, which happens t be the number f days in a lunar year.
The team used statistical mdels derived frm gravitatinal wave research, a large-scale physics experiment designed t measure ripples in spacetime millins f light-years frm Earth and Bayesian analysis, a technique using prbability t quantify uncertainty based n incmplete data, t calculate the likely number f hles in the mechanism using the psitins f the surviving hles and the placement f the ring’s surviving six fragments.
Surprisingly, the inspiratin fr the study came frm a YuTuber Chris Budiselic, wh has been attempting t physically recreate the ancient mechanism and investigating ways t determine just hw many hles it cntained.
“It’s a neat symmetry that we’ve adapted techniques we use t study the universe tday t understand mre abut a mechanism that helped peple keep track f the heavens nearly tw millennia ag,” Wan said.
“We hpe that ur findings abut the Antikythera mechanism, althugh less supernaturally spectacular than thse made by Indiana Jnes, will help deepen ur understanding f hw this remarkable device was made and used by the Greeks,” Wan sadded.
32. What was the riginal purpse f the statistical mdelingtechniques?
A. T study the Antikythera mechanism.B. T investigate ancient artifacts.
C. T track the Greek lunar year.D. T analyze gravitatinal waves.
33. Hw did the researchers calculate the likely number f hles in the mechanism?
A. By using statistical mdels and Bayesian analysis.
B. By bserving the mechanism directly.
C. By asking YuTuber Chris Budiselic.
D. By bserving the physical recreatin f the mechanism.
34. The underlined term “Bayesian analysis” in paragraph 4 refer t a technique.
A. t recreate an ancient mechanism.
B. t measure ripples in spacetime.
C. t calculate uncertainty based n insufficient data.
D. t calculate the psitins f the surviving hles.
35. What is the main idea f the text?
A. Mdern science was ideally cmbined with an ancient artifact.
B. The Antikythera mechanism was discvered in a shipwreck.
C. The mystery f the Antikythera mechanism remains unslved.
D. Gravitatinal wave research revealed the Antikythera mechanismt.
