Researcher Ruijia Hu said wildlife habitat in crwded places like suthwest Ohi is becming increasingly fragmented (分散) as frests give way t new cnstructin. Eventually, this culd make truble t an animal with specific habitat needs like Ohi’s pileated (红冠) wdpecker.
Pileated wdpeckers have the nickname carpenter birds fr their never-ending natural wdwrking. They peck ut hles in trees fr their nests every year, creating lts f valuable hmes fr animals like fx squirrels and wls. “They make new nests every year. They wn’t reuse ld nes,” Hu said. “Other animals depend n them.”
Pileated wdpeckers are private birds that are mre ften heard than seen. Studying them can be especially difficult. S Hu turned t citizen science fr help. T identify where wdpeckers have been seen, she used eight years f sightings cllected by birders and lgged int the website eBird, a free nline tl and app that anyne can use t recrd their bservatins and lcatins. She verlaid these sightings with remte sensing data and fund that crridrs alng rivers and creeks with abundant mature trees and deadwd helped the birds adjust t their increasingly fragmented urban landscape.
“With fragmented frests, many habitats that were nce suitable fr wildlife are brken up,” Hu said. “Wildlife is unable t find habitat big enugh t meet their survival needs. And even if there are suitable habitats, the distance between them can be t great. Wildlife crridrs link up these habitat patches. Since wildlife can travel and migrate frm ne patch t anther, the prbability f finding fd and shelter is higher.”
“There are s many species in urban areas that we dn’t pay attentin t, especially when they’re nt cnsidered vulnerable,” Hu said. “With develpment chipping away at mre frest in this crwded cunty, the tipping pint (临界点) culd cme quickly and unexpectedly. Yu can’t fix it vernight. It’s nt just abut planting mre trees. The birds need mature frest, s it culd take 30 t 50 years t replace their habitat. At least we can prtect these riverside frest crridrs and see that existing trees reach maturity.”
    28. What can we infer frm the secnd paragraph?
    A. One’s trash is anther treasure.B. Birds abandn the ld fr the new easily.
    C. Friendship really exists amng animals.D. The magpie’s nest is ccupied by the dve.

Healthy human skin is cvered with bacteria (细菌) that are quick t settle in an pen wund. T prevent these rganisms frm spreading thrugh the bdy, which can permanently injure r kill a persn, the infected wund may need t be cleaned and treated with antibitics. Medical prfessinals typically identify infectins by unwrapping and bserving a wund r by swabbing (用拭子擦拭) it and cnducting a labratry test. But remving a wund dressing can slw dwn the healing prcess. Plus, bservatins are subjective, while swab tests take time and require that a patient be physically present.
T address these issues, sme research teams are develping devices that sit under bandages and cntinuusly mnitr indirect signs f infectin, such as changes in wund temperature r acidity. And scientists at the Natinal University f Singapre have nw created an even mre direct infectin sensr.
This sensr can detect an enzyme (酶) called DNase. The enzyme acts as a reliable infectin indicatr because disease-causing bacteria prduce it in large amunts inside wunds, whereas bacteria n healthy skin d nt—s testing fr the substance reduces the chance f a false psitive result. Furthermre, DNase builds up befre ther infectin signs appear. The new alert system, nicknamed the “wireless infectin detectin n wunds” (WINDOW) sensr, was detailed in Science Advances.
WINDOW’s enzyme-sensing parts rely n a material called DNAgel. There searchers develped a particular kind f DNAgel that remains stable in watery envirnments, such as the human bdy, but begins t break dwn in the presence f DNase. They cnnected this gel (凝胶) t a chip that senses when the gel respnds by sending a signal t a smartphne.
Thus far, the team has expsed the DNAgel t wund swabs frm 18 peple’s wunds t see hw much the material degraded in the presence f the bacteria. There searchers als used the device n six living lab mice whse wunds were expsed t the same bacterial species, and it successfully detected infectins.
    32. What is the first paragraph mainly abut?
    A. The harm f cmmn wunds.B. The treatment f infected wunds.
    C. The interventin n wund healing.D. The dilemma f infectin bservatin.
    33. Hw des the WINDOW sensr detect infectins?
    A. By cmparing wund acidity.B. By detecting the DNase enzyme.
    C. By measuring the bacteria amunt.D. By bserving changes in wund clr.
    34. What can we expect f the WINDOW sensr in the future?
    A. It will cut dwn the length f infectin-treating
    B. It culd reduce the cst f infectin bservatin.
    C. It can mnitr wunds cntinuusly and remtely.
    D. It might help cnduct labratry tests n wunds.
    35. What can be the best title fr the text?
    A. Innvatins in Wund Infectin Detectin
    B. Remving the Dangers f Open Wunds
    C. Recgnizing the Rle f DNase in Healing
    D. Challenges in Wund Care and Treatment

A future where insects make up a large part f the wrld’s diet is n the hrizn. Despite the unpleasant nature f such cuisine, insects have been cnsidered a delicacy in sme parts f wrld fr centuries. Their being lw-fat and high-prtein makes them a perfect chice fr reducing hunger. 36

Insects such as grasshppers, meal wrms and crickets are packed full f prtein with much higher vitamin levels than prk r beef. 38 Greenhuse gas emissins thrugh this prcess are als very little, with insect waste making excellent fertilizer (肥料) fr agricultural sil.
It seems that insects are an ideal slutin fr many issues the wrld tday is faced with. 39 Urban areas f Asia, Eurpe and Nrth America are mst likely t assciate insects with dirt instead f as a tasty meal.
Times are changing. The Eurpean Unin last year declared that meal wrms were safe fr human cnsumptin. Cricket prtein pwder is als increasing greatly in ppularity, with Canada rapidly becming the largest market fr the prduct.
40 As we explre ur slar system, efficient means f prducing animal based-prteins will becme vital. Nne are mre efficient space-wise than insects. And the clnies f the future culd well find themselves enjying fried crickets with a pint f beer while watching the Martian sunset.
    A. They als have a hst f envirnmental benefits.
    B. Insects reprduce quickly and have high grwth rates.
    C. Unlike agriculture, insects prduce far fewer greenhuse gases
    D. They require little space, water and technlgy t raise cmpared t livestck.
    E. Hwever, making them a delicius cuisine can be a challenge in several cultures
    F. By freeing up livestck space, huge expanses f land culd be returned t nature.
