吉林省长春市2023_2024学年高一英语上学期12月期中试题
展开A
Far, far belw yur feet lies a surce f nearly endless energy. Earth's cre is abut as ht as the surface f the Sun, s ht that it melts the rcky layers abve it int magma, r liquid rck. Wuldn't it be great if we culd tap int all that energy? In sme places, we d!
The Geysers is an area nrth f San Francisc in Califrnia where magma's heat turns a reservir f undergrund water int steam. This regin is hme t 18 gethermal pwer plants. The steam rises up thrugh spaces between the rcks undergrund, a bit like hw steam purs frm a teakettle biling n a stve. The pwer plant has pipelines that send the steam int the turbines (涡轮机) where electricity flw is generated. Once the steam leaves the turbine, it ges int a cling twer where it turns back int liquid. Then it's piped back int the reservir t be reheated again. Other kinds f gethermal pwer plants pump ht grundwater int the pwer plant. Then the pressure is reduced, causing the liquid t flash int steam that turns the turbine and generates electricity flw. Once the steam cls and turns back int liquid, it's pumped back dwn int the reservir t begin the cycle again.
S why dn't we all heat ur hmes with free steam frm the earth? First, the heat has t be clse enugh t the surface fr us t reach it. Next, there has t be plenty f undergrund water t be heated. Finally, there has t be a layer f rck that water r steam can flw thrugh. S in places where all three f thse things cme tgether, gethermal energy can be a pwerful renewable energy surce. Besides, when a gethermal plant returns water back int the ht rcks f a reservir, it makes the rck crack a bit, which can cause small earthquakes. There's anther danger that cmes with drilling near magma-pipes and ther equipment might melt if they hit a pcket f magma r are caught in an eruptin. One gethermal plant in Hawaii was partially buried by lava in 2018. But engineers are hpeful that the repaired plant will generate even mre pwer. Gethermal energy isn't the answer fr everywhere, but it's a piece f the puzzle t help slw climate change.

Bilgical fieldwrk can mean trips t extic places. The mst cmmn methd is t send a few eager graduate students armed with camera traps and several weeks f spare time. But perhaps nt fr much lnger. A paper published in Current Bilgy suggests an easier methd: simply swabbing(擦拭) nearby leaves fr DNA.
The DNA in questin is called "envirnmental DNA" (eDNA fr shrt). It refers t all the genetic infrmatin that animals leave behind as they g abut their daily business: breathing, urinating, r interacting with their envirnment in any way. In recent years, genesequencing(基因测序) technlgy has becme quick and sensitive enugh t pick ut genetic sequences frm particular animals including humans frm this eDNA.
One way f ding s is simply t blw air thrugh filters(过滤器), and then analyse them t see which animals live nearby. Drs Ggarten and Lynggaard wndered if there might be a simpler apprach. Air-sampling systems can take days t d their wrk. Maintenance must be dne, and filters must be changed. But given that eDNA is literally blwing arund ecsystems, the searchers wndered if it might be cllecting n leaves.
The leaves f many plants are waxy(蜡质的) and smewhat sticky. The researchers therised that eDNA might end up stuck t leaves and that it culd subsequently be cllected by swabbing them. They tested their thery in the dense rain frests f Kibale Natinal Park, in Uganda. Using simple cttn swabs, and wearing masks and glves t prevent plluting the samples with their wn DNA, they visited three areas f the park and cllected eight swabs at each site, and then tk them back t Cpenhagen fr analysis.
The swabs revealed the presence f 26 birds, 24 mammals, ne amphibian and ne fish, with each swab cntaining DNA frm eight animals n average. Mre than half the samples were gd enugh t wrk ut the precise species they came frm.
Swabbing fr animals, then, seems t wrk. Mrever, it is cheap, easy and fast. Graduate students will have t be cntent spending less time sample-hunting in distant parts f the wrld.
6.Wh will benefit mst frm the research findings?
A. Frest farmers.B. Bilgical graduates.
C. Ambitius scientists.D. Envirnmental activists.
7.Why was the researchers armed with masks and glves?
A. T prtect the leaves.B. T avid getting stuck.
C. T stay safe frm wax.D. T ensure the quality f samples.
8.Hw is eDNA methd cmpared with the cmmn ways?
A. Mre animal-friendly.B. Free f cmplex analysis.
C. Mre accurate and effective.D. Ecnmical in time and mney.
9.What serves as the best title fr the text?
A. Swabbing leaves: an easier methd t track animals
B. Testing eDNA: a useful tl fr animal detectin
