One day, there’ll be n need fr yu t brush yur teeth by hand. Instead, a grup f billins f nanparticles (纳米粒子) culd autmatically d all that wrk fr yu. It wuld be especially life-changing fr peple wh find it difficult r impssible t hld and mve a tthbrush.
Steager, an engineer at the University f Pennsylvania (Penn) in Philadelphia and Hyun K, an inventr and dental researcher there, fund a way t frm the nanparticles int lng, skinny bristles (刷毛), a lt like the nes an a tthbrush. But these bristles shape-shift t fit whatever surface they encunter.
The tth- cleaning rbt wrks thanks t tw magnets (磁铁). One ges each side f the teeth. The nanparticles sit in a liquid between the magnets. When the magnets are turned ff, the nanparticles mve randmly in the liquid. As sn as ne magnet gets turned n, the nanparticles gather tgether near its center. When the researchers turn n the ther magnet and turn ff the first ne, the nanparticles extend utward in lng, skinny bristles. When there’s a tth in the way, these bristles can’t stretch ut as far as they want. S they push against the tth’s surface. If there’s a gap between teeth, they push int the gap. Mving the magnets makes the bristles mve against and between teeth. All that mtin cleans the teeth. As a bnus, the nanparticles als have strng pwer t kill viruses.
The new device is just a prf f cncept. The researchers still need t turn it int a prduct that peple will want t use. “There’s a lt f engineering t get frm here t there, but every gd idea needs t have a start.” says Steager.

Tie an Italian’s hands behind his back and he’ll be speechless, which is an ld jke in the US. Hwever, Susan Gldin-Meadwin, authr f the bk Thinking With Yur Hands, has a rather different view.
“Almst everyne gestures, nt just Italians,” she laughs. “Cnference interpreters gesture in their little rms, thugh n ne is lking at them. Even peple brn blind gesture when they speak, including t each ther. In the TV series, The Crwn, Lady Diana is warned that her hands may reveal her real emtins, which culd be dangerus and that they have t be tied tgether s she can learn t speak withut gesturing.”
The gesture under discussin here is the s-called “c-speech gesture”. It is much mre abstract (抽象) than such symblic gestures like a finger ver the lips fr “Silence!” r raising a finger t mean “Great!”. Like wrds, such symblic gestures are fixed within cultures (but vary between them). Instead, c-speech gestures that accmpany speech are anther channel f infrmatin and emtin. Fr example, experimental subjects are asked t watch a film in which a cat runs, but they are tld t lie and say it jumped. They may d s in wrds - while their hands will make a running mvement. The c-speech gesture is nt sign languages, either. They have clearly defined wrds and grammar and differ frm place t place just as spken nes d.
And the c-speech gestures have great ptential fr practical applicatins. Fr example, teachers are encuraged bth t use gestures themselves and t bserve thse their students make. Sme students wh fail at a tricky mathematics prblem may gesture in a way that indicates they are n the edge f getting it; they shuld be taught differently frm the nes whse gestures suggest that they are entirely at sea.
“Children with language delays caused by brain injuries at r arund birth are likely t catch up verbally by the age f abut 30 mnths, if they gesture as much as their peers. Thse wh gesture less are mre likely t need early interventin,” Susan Gldin-Meadw in adds. “C-speech gesturing is nt just abut a lack f cntrl. It is abut thinking and cmmunicatin, and is an aid t bth.”
12. What des Susan Gldin-Meadwin really want t tell us in paragraph 2?
A. Lady Diana is prbably an emtinal wman.
B Italians are very talkative and gesture t much.
C. It is unnatural fr the blind t gesture t each ther.
D. C-speech gestures are used by all f us unknwingly.
13. What can we say abut sign languages?
A. They are as abstract as c-speech gestures.
B. They are usually learned by human beings naturally.
C. They have distinctly structured wrds and grammar.
D. They vary frm culture t culture and persn t persn.
14. What des the authr suggest teachers d in the passage?
A. Put enugh trust in students.
B. Encurage students t tell the truth.
C. Observe the c-speech gestures carefully.
D. Teach as many tricky prblems as pssible.
15. What is the main idea f this passage?
A. C-speech gestures play a vital part in cmmunicatin.
B. Symblic gestures differ greatly frm c-speech gestures.
C. C-speech gestures are mre difficult than sign languages.
D Symblic gestures have great ptential fr practical applicatins.
