Over the decades, Yasmeen Lari, Pakistan’s first female architect, has wn much recgnitin as an architect and envirnmentalist.
When Lari was yung, she had an uncnventinal upbringing. Her father was a prgressive civil service fficer wh ften talked abut the husing crisis and need fr architects, which impressed Lari greatly. At age 17, she was admitted t the architecture schl at Oxfrd Brkes University as ne f nly five wmen in the class.
After graduatin, as her buildings rse, Lari’s renwn grew. She held senir psitins in natinal and internatinal architectural grups. “It was a very heady experience,” she says. Yet she fund ways t stay grunded. Sn the discmfrt with cmmercial prjects grew in her-with their creative freedm, large budgets and luxurius materials. She culd n lnger justify fashining buildings ut f unsustainable materials when millins had limited access t husing, sanitatin (公共卫生) and water. “Architects can n lnger wrk fr just the ne percent,” she says, “That desn’t allw them t serve humanity as much as they culd.”
In 2013, when Lari was giving a tur f a village that had been rebuilt after destructive flds, she watched the villagers shw ff the buildings she had designed. “Our ld buildings used t leak when it rained, but these stay dry inside,” ne villager tld Lari. Pakistan’s lcatin and melting glaciers place it within the tp ten cuntries mst impacted by climate change. Lari’s shelters, made with lcal sustainable materials such as bamb, mud and lime, can better withstand disasters. Her insistence n lw-cst, zer-waste and zer-carbn buildings reflects her cmmitment t the planet.
At age 83, Yasmeen Lari is still wrking n zer-carbn designs and self-sustaining villages. When she accepted the Ryal Institute f British Architects Gld Medal, she said, the hnur “has strengthened my missin”.
    24. What made Lari take an interest in architecture?
    A. Shrtage f female architects.B. Traditinal parenting values.
    C. Her father’s influence in childhd.D. Admissin t an architecture schl.
    25. Which statement abut architects may Lari agree with?
    A. They shuld center n the well-being f the general public.
    B. They shuld spend millins f dllars in fashining buildings.
    C. They shuld be a hundred percent cmmitted t their missin.
    D. They shuld use luxurius materials t display their creativity.
    26. What did the villager think f the huse designed by Lari?
    A. Cst-effective.B. Material-saving.C. Water-prf.D. Ec-friendly.
    27. What was her missin accrding t Lari?

Frm the swinging rhythms f the 1950s t the auttuned hks f tday, pp music has undergne a remarkable transfrmatin. But what exactly has changed, and hw can we measure it?
Researchers identify tw majr “meldic (旋律的) revlutins” in pp music histry: ne in 1975 and anther in 2000. These turning pints mark significant shifts in the structure and cmplexity f hit meldies. Interestingly, these musical milestnes aren’t perfectly in line with the revlutins in harmny and tne clr, suggesting that different aspects f music may evlve at different rates.
During these revlutins, meldies have generally becme simpler, bth in terms f pitch (音高) and rhythm. Mdern pp hits tend t use a smaller range f ntes and simpler rhythmic patterns cmpared t thse frm the 1950s and 60s. At the same time, there was a dramatic increase in “nte density”—the number f ntes squeezed int each secnd f music. This means that while tday’s pp meldies might be simpler in structure, they’re ften delivered mre rapidly, creating a sense f energy and urgency that wasn’t as cmmn in earlier decades.
There are several interesting pssibilities fr what is happening. One thery suggests that as ther aspects f music prductin—like cmplex electrnic beats and richly layered instrumentatin—have becme mre sphisticated, meldies have had t simplify t maintain a balance. Anther explanatin pints t the changing landscape f music cnsumptin. In an era f streaming and scial media, where listeners can skip t the next sng in secnds, there may be mre pressure t create tunes that grab attentin instantly. This culd favr simpler, mre repetitive meldies that are easy t remember and sing alng t.
Relatinships between different musical features have als becme strnger in recent years. Fr example, in pst-2000 pp hits, meldies with mre ntes per secnd tend t be less cmplex in terms f pitch variety. This suggests that mdern pp sngwriting may be fllwing stricter patterns than in the past.
    28. What change has taken place in pp music ver the years?
    A. Denser ntes.B. Bigger range f pitch.
    C. Mre cmplex rhythms.D. Mre diverse tne clrs.
    29. Which f the fllwing may cntribute t the revlutin f pp music?
    A. The difficulty in creating catchier tunes. B. The cnventinal patterns t enjy music.
    C. The cnvenience f switching between sngs. D. The need t balance increasingly intense beats.
    30. What can we infer frm the last paragraph?
    A. Pp sngwriting might be mre flexible in the past.
    B. Mdern pp music priritizes simplicity in meldy.
    C. Pst-2000 pp hits feature cmplexity in pitch variety.
    D. Relatinships between musical elements are invariable.
    31. What’s the purpse f the text?
    A. T prve a viewpint. B. T remve sme dubts. C. T illustrate a principle. D. T analyze a phenmenn.
    D
Tipping pints, als knwn as critical transitins (转变), are mathematical cliff-edges influencing everything in ur life. The financial crisis f 2007-09 is ften described as ne. S is the mment that cvid-19 went glbal. Anyne can spt a tipping pint after it’s been crssed. But it is extremely difficult t spt them befre they happen.
Cmputer scientists in China nw shw that artificial intelligence (AI) can help. In a recent study, the researchers accurately predicted the beginning f tipping pints in cmplicated systems with the help f machine-learning algrithms (算法). It culd help slve real-wrld prblems, such as predicting flds and pwer failure.
T simplify their calculatins, the team reduced all such prblems t nes taking place within a large netwrk f interacting ndes (节点), the individual elements within a large system. In a financial system, fr example, a nde might represent a cmpany. The team then designed tw artificial neural (神经的) netwrks t analyze such systems.
T train their mdel, the researchers firstly turned t simplified theretical systems in which tipping pints are knwn t ccur. Once the mdel culd predict these transitins, it was applied t the real-wrld prblem f hw trpical frests turn t savannah (稀树草原). This has happened many times n Earth, but the details remain mysterius. The researchers first analyzed the data frm three central African regins in the past 20 years and identified the tipping pints. They then wanted t see if training their algrithm n data frm tw f these regins culd enable it t crrectly predict a transitin pint in the third. It culd.
The team then asked the algrithm t identify the cnditins that drve the shift. The answer was, as expected, dwn t annual rainfall. But the AI was able t g further. The AI detailed that a slight decrease in rainfall frm 1,800 mm t 1,630 mm led t a minr 5% drp in tree cver, but a further decrease t 1,620 mm caused a significant 30% drp. This wuld be a textbk critical transitin. And by predicting it frm the raw data, the researchers say they have brken new grund in this field.
The team are nw trying t discver what specific features the Al identifies t make these predictins, which culd help better predict everything frm infectius utbreaks t the next stck market crash.
    32. Hw did the team simplify the calculatins?
    A. By limiting the prblems within a large netwrk. B. By fcusing n the individual elements in a netwrk.
    C. By transfrming the prblems int nes in a netwrk. D. By reducing the number f prblems in each netwrk.
    33. Why was the algrithm trained n data frm tw central African regins?
    A. T imprve its ability f predictin.B. T check its analysis f the data.
    C. T perfect its slutins t prblems.D. T test the accuracy f its predictin.
    34. What breakthrugh did the AI make in the study?
    A. It revealed the idea that tipping pints are predictable.
    B. It identified a critical transitin pint in the tree cver.
    C. It cnfirmed previus theries abut rainfall and tree cver.
    D. It predicted the future expansin f savannahs in central Africa.
    35. Which f the fllwing culd be the best title f the passage?
    A. The Analysis f Rainfall: AI and Tree Cver B. Sptting Tipping Pints: A Big Challenge fr AI
    C. Machine Learning: Predicting Critical Mment D. Critical Transitins: The Key t Making Predictins

That’s why I recmmend picking up a USB pwer bank, which will give yu a little bit f extra juice t keep yu cnnected t the rest f the wrld.
    Enable Data raming (漫游)
38 The gd news is that it is easier than ever t stay cnnected t the net when abrad. Make sure yu check with yur netwrk prvider what yur raming plan is. In many cuntries it is straightfrward t buy a SIM card fr a lcal netwrk, with a much mre generus data allwance. 39 If yu’ve gt a newer phne, it will prbably supprt “eSIM”—where yu can simply use an app like Hlafly r Airal while cnnected t wifi t set yurself up n a new netwrk temprarily.
    Dwnlad ffline applicatin sftware
And finally, yu need t get yur apps in rder. Once yu reach yur destinatin yu’ll need a mapping app, and maybe even a translatin app—Apple and Ggle make their wn versin f bth. And mdern translatin apps are particularly exciting. 40 Then yu get a clear translatin. Make sure that all f the critical data is dwnladed s that apps wrk ffline and yu can travel the wrld like a lcal. Bn vyage!
    A. What gd is a phne withut Internet access?
    B. Yu simply wave yur phne at the scanner instead.
    C. In fact, yu may nt even need a physical card anymre.
    D. Why d yu need t get yur phne ready t be cnnected?
    E. But when yu’re away frm hme, yu’re prbably using it s much mre.
    F. Yu can typically just wave the camera f yur phne ver pretty much anything.
    G. But befre leaving fr the airprt, ensure yur phne is ready fr the jurney ahead!

Yu must...” He listed all f the ways that she had t be respnsible with her phne. But Ava, t busy with chsing the perfect wallpaper, dwnlading apps, and chatting with her best friend Sarah, nly half-listened.
Over the weekend, Sarah’s mm tk the girls t a mvie. Nrmally Ava avided hrrr films, but Sarah’s pleading wrds with funny memes (表情包) had smehw cnvinced Ava that the mvie might actually be enjyable. Befre the mvie started, Sarah’s mm instructed the girls t silence their phnes ut f respect fr thers. As the mvie’s tensin built, Ava fund herself grwing increasingly uncmfrtable. “I need t g t the bathrm,” Ava whispered t Sarah.

During the event, we tk turns t discuss the engaging plt, underlying themes and cmplex character relatinships f the cllectively-chsen bk Great Expectatins. It was fascinating t hear diverse perspectives! This experience significantly deepened my appreciatin fr literature. I particularly enjyed the sharing f varius perspectives n character analysis, which enabled me t critically appreciate the classic wrk. Mst imprtantly, the relaxing exchange bsted my cnfidence in vicing my wn insights.

Her father’s brw furrwed. “Did it perhaps fall frm yur pcket during the mvie? Or culd it have…?” Her mther inquired anxiusly. When Ava admitted that, in her panic, she had frgtten t g back and search prperly r ask fr help, her parents exchanged a silent glance. “Accidents happen.” Her father assured her. “We’ll figure this ut tgether.”
Para 2: Then her parents drve her back t the cinema. They went t the receptin desk and asked the cinema staff fr help. It turned ut that smene had turned the phne in t the frnt desk.
