As a child, I was prud f my suthern rigin. My wn vice reflected my family’s past and present- part nrthern Mississippi, part Tennessee, all suthern. There was n sund I lved mre than my grandmther’s accent: thick, sweet, warm.
While grwing up, I began t realize utside f ur regin, sutherners were ften dismissed as uncultured and ignrant. I was ready t leave behind my tiny twn in West Tennessee, starting a new life and jumping at big chances in sme far- ff cities. In that embarrassing space between “teen” and “adult”, my accent was a symbl f everything I thught I hated abut my life in the rural Suth. I feared it wuld disqualify me frm being a nted magazine writer. I wuld have t talk less “cuntry”. S I killed a piece f myself. I’m ashamed f it, but I’m mre ashamed that I tried t kill that part f smene else- change Emily’s accent.
I met Emily in cllege. She was determined t wrk fr the student newspaper, which was where I spent mst f my waking hurs, and we became friends. She, unlike me, accepted her rts. Early in ur friendship, her mther asked where I was frm, assuming it was smewhere up nrth. Then I felt my effrts paid ff and even wanted t ignre the mistake.
Emily is tw years yunger and she cared abut my pinin. I advised her t be mre like me and hide her signature Manchester accent. I stressed that thrughut ur cllege years, ften by making fun f her vwel (元音) sunds I tld myself I was helping her achieve her dream f wrking as a reprter. Nw, I see that it was actually abut justifying my hiding part f myself.
Grandma Carlyn used t tell me, “Girl, dn’t frget where yu cme frm.” Nw I truly understand that. Many things have faded frm memry, but this sticks in my mind with uncmfrtable clarity. Nw that I am grwn and have left the Suth, it’s imprtant t me.

Researchers frm Aarhus University and University f Gthenburg have prduced new maps f mammals (哺乳动物) t date cnnecting all living and recently extinct mammal kinds- nearly 6,000 in ttal.
Earlier similar studies always left ut ne key grup f mammals: species driven t extinctin by humans.
Scientists ften use these maps t predict hw climate change will affect species. And because the new nes shw species’ ftprints, they help scientists better see many species have had their numbers greatly reduced by humans, fr example, thrugh ver hunting and the destrying f their habitats.
“Brwn bears may lead us t think f Alaska r Russia tday but they used t cver all the way frm Mexic t Nrthern Africa befre they were widely hunted by humans.” said Faurby.
We usually think large mammals like elephants and lins live in Africa tday, but fr mst f the last 30 millin years, big animals traveled all ver the Earth. It was nly recently that humans drve many f these large mammals extinct, leaving a wrld depauperate f large mammals.
“Even sme huge species that we think f as prehistric, lived up t the time the Great Pyramid was being built,” Davis said.
Making a database that included every species f mammal was n easy task. It tk the research team· at Aarhus University mnths just t piece tgether existing datasets and fill in missing hles in the data.
Marking ftprints n the map fr them was even harder. The scientists used bth DNA infrmatin and data frm sme di g sites arund the wrld with a pwerful new cmputer algrithm (算法) t predict where the extinct species fit in with mammals that are alive tday.

When drnes (无人机) first became widely available arund 15 years ag, it wasn’t uncmmn t find tech peple painting dramatic pictures f hw they were sn ging t change the wrld. Hwever, if yu lk up int the largely empty sky, yu can see that hasn’t happened yet.
Sure, drnes are useful fr taking aerial (空中的) phts, but we’re a lng way away frm aerial superhighways, packed with autnmus drnes carrying parcels at speeds that are near- impssible n the grund.
In 2016, Amazn annunced it had cmpleted its first ever aerial delivery. In a vide, we saw an Amazn “Prime Air” drne pick up a parcel and fly it acrss the cuntryside landing in the buyer’s garden, drpping the parcel, and then returning t its hme base. But Amazn still hasn’t cmpleted its secnd drne delivery In fact, it has reprtedly dwnsized the drne prgram.
S, will drne delivery ever be a thing? There are sme indicatins f a pssible drne delivery future nt in Britain, but in Africa. Because als since 2016, rural hspitals in Rwanda have been receiving regular shipments f medical supplies by drne thanks t a cmpany called Zipline. It surely has saved lives, thanks t the speed at which bld can be delivered in a cuntry with a prly develped rad netwrk. S culd we ever expect such a system here?
Unfrtunately, there’s a big difference between rural Africa and thickly ppulated Britain. British hmes dn’t have large gardens where t land and nbdy wants lud large drnes cnstantly landing arund the neighburhd. Anther reality is that British cities may still have security and safety cncerns abut rutinely having drnes carrying stuff ver ur heads.
That’s why I wnder if the real drne future culd be crawling (爬) alng the grund. Fr a few years, “autnmus delivery rbts” with wheels have been walking n the pavements. S perhaps we’re nt s far away frm a drne delivery future, but the reality might be a little bit mre dwn t earth.
32. What can we learn frm the first tw paragraphs?
A. Drnes are widely used in daily life.
B. Drnes have made delivery efficient.
C. Drnes are designed t take aerial phts.
D Drnes haven’t changed the wrld as expected.
33. Why des the authr mentin Zipline’s drne delivery?
A. T explain the prcess f drne delivery.
B. T discuss the pssibility f a drne delivery future.
C. T stress the prfits brught by drne delivery.
D. T shw its advantages ver Amazn’s drne delivery.
34. What is paragraph 5 mainly abut?
A. The security and safety cncerns abut drnes.
B. The ways that British peple react t drne delivery.
C. The differences between African cuntries and Britain.
D. The reasns why drne delivery isn’t suitable fr Britain.
35. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Change the Wrld with Drnes
B. A Bright Future fr Drne Delivery
C. Drne Delivery Future: Pic in the Sky
D. Drne Applicatins at Risk Wrldwide
