What is a GPA?
A GPA, r Grade Pint Average, typically ranging frm ne t fur, is a number reflecting yur curse perfrmance n average. It’s used by universities t determine whether students meet academic standards and by students t enhance jb prspects r se cure admissin int pst-graduate prgrams.
Hw t calculate a GPA?
●Determine the letter grade and the number f credit hurs fr each curse yu take in a term;
●Translate the letter grade t grade pints using yur schl’s grading system;
●Multiply the grade pints by the credit hurs fr that curse;
●Add up all the credit hurs fr the curses;
●Divide the ttal number f grade pints by the ttal credit hurs and yu get the GPA.
What are the cnsequences f failing cllege curses?
●Every failing grade (F) significantly impacts yur GPA fr that academic year, limiting clubs, rganizatins and prgram chices, as cmpetitive prgrams require tp GPAs.
●Mst financial aid prgrams require a specific GPA. A sharp drp in GPA due t several curse failures may lead t withdrawal (退出) frm financial aid prgrams, unless yu retake the curses and pass.
●Fr cllege athletes n sprts schlarships, failing curses repeatedly can lead t lsing schlarships and team spts.
●Failing multiple curses can result in schl remval and affect future applicatins.
21. Where is this text prbably taken frm?
A. An academic curse guide.B. A campus jb fair pster.
C. A graduate applicatin frm.D. An athletic team schedule.

A few years ag, I std underneath a red verhanging cliff (悬崖) near my hmetwn. The weather was amazing. Deer chewed n the brwn grasses by the river belw. An eagle rde the wind. Twnsflk and visitrs wandered in a nearby ht spring.
I was tied in, ready t climb. I was attempting t d a rute first try, “nsight”, as we call it, which means I didn’t knw what I was climbing int. It wuld have been a hard nsight fr me t nsight hard climbs. Yu need clarity. N interference (干预).
Just as I was abut t climb, nerves in my bdy, which I hadn’t felt yet, said hell. That’s nt gd fr any athlete. Desperate, I painted a cat f cnfidence n my inner walls f dubt. I visualized myself at the tp, celebrating. “Yu can d this,” I firmly tld myself. “If yu believe, success is certain.”
It didn’t wrk. I fell near the tp. Defeated, I lwered t the grund and realized pwerfully that the desire t climb the rute had kept me frm ding it. My self-wrth was bund tgether by my success r failure at that mment, and that set ff a chain reactin: unnatural desire, pressure, perfrmance anxiety, anticipatin, a mind fascinated with the tp but a bdy struggling belw, bad decisin-making, irregular mvement, distractin, frustratin. All in that rder, t.
In a flash, I tld myself that n my next attempt, success r failure was irrelevant. “Make ne mve at a time. That’s all.” I gave myself a pass frm whatever wuld happen. It wrked. I flated t the tp with self-cntrl and clarity.
That mment gt me thinking. At sme pint, I framed this experience fr myself in terms f simple mathematics. When I added determinatin, curage, self-cnfidence and desire, I failed. When I tk away the desire fr success, I imprved. I enjyed it mre as well, which, as an athlete f 30 years, I didn’t think was pssible. Eventually, I discvered the pwer f subtractin.

Fishing grunds supply many peple with fd. But the nets used by them may trap ther things: endangered animals such as turtles; dangerus nes, such as Humbldt squid (美洲大赤鱿); and nes that are bth endangered and dangerus, such as several types f sharks.
Jesse Senk, a bilgist at Arizna State University, has been investigating the idea f fitting LEDS t net s t avid ther unwanted by-catch (误捕的鱼) withut discuraging target animals frm entangling themselves. And it seems t wrk.
While sharks are better knwn fr their gd sense f smell, many have gd visin, t. And, thugh referred t as “fish”, they are actually less clsely related t the bny fish than turtles are, s their visual systems might easily be as different. It thus seemed wrthwhile checking t see whether the trick that wrked with turtles wuld wrk with sharks.
Dr. Senk and his clleagues therefre set up an experiment in the Gulf f Ulla, in Mexic, in which they cperated with fishermen t set ver 10,000 metres f nets that had had battery-pwered green LEDS attached t them. In half f the nets these lights were lit. The ther half were left unlit, as cntrls.
The fishers’ target s were Califrnian halibut (大比目鱼) and large grupers. Dr. Senk was interested bth in what else gt caught and whether the lights decreased catches f the target species.
On the latter pint, they did nt. On the frmer, the lit nets caught 95% fewer kilgrams f sharks. In particular, several threatened species turned up less ften in the lit nets.
The advantage frm the pint f view f fishermen was that they needed t spend a lt less time clearing these by- catches frm their nets. And, imprtantly, the LEDS cncerned are cheap and easy t fit. There are als plans t make them slar pwered, fr easy recharging. Here, then, is a cnservatin idea frm which everyne wins.
28. Which f the fllwing has the clsest meaning t the underlined wrd “entangling”?
A. hurting.B. trapping.C. defending.D. adapting.
29. What des the authr intend t shw in paragraph 3?

A. Sharks were nwhere t be seen in the lit nets.
B. The green lights decreased catches f the target species.
C. Nets fitted with LEDs are within the reach f mst fishermen.
D. The lit nets drve ff unwanted by-catches effectively.
31 What can be the best title fr the passage?
A. The Widespread Use f Green LEDSB. Effrts Made in Ocean Cnservatin
C. A Green Light fr Saving sharksD. Fishing Withut Harming Target Species

Wuld yu uplad yur mind int a cmputer?
As far as science can tell, the brain creates yur sense f self. Cells called neurns (神经元) fire in patterns that frm yur memries, likes, dislikes, and mre. Hypthetically (假设地), if sme instrument culd gather enugh infrmatin abut the neurns in yur brain, then that infrmatin culd be saved in a data file. Then, perhaps, yur unique netwrk f neurns culd be recreated, either in a cmputer simulatin (电脑模拟程序) r in sme srt f artificial bdy.
Sme science fictin writers have imagined that brain uplads might free humans frm aging, disease, and physical pain. We culd ptentially live frever, like immrtal gds and gddesses.
That sunds abslutely wild. And it is. N technlgy cmes clse t cpying an entire brain. In 2019, a team f researchers at the Allen Institute fr Brain Science in Seattle, Washingtn, mapped ut all the neurns in a sectin f muse brain tissue. It was the size f a grain f sand. T d this, they sliced (切成薄片) the brain speck (小片) int 25,000 tiny pieces and tk mre than 100 millin pictures f these. The images shwed mre than 100,000 neurns with arund a billin intercnnectins
This prcess tk five mnths and ate up t tw millin gigabytes f cmputer strage space. That’s enugh t stre 40,000 ultra-high-definitin mvies! And that’s all fr ne tiny muse brain speck. Imaging an entire human brain with this technlgy tday wuld require dzens f micrscpes wrking arund the clck fr thusands f years.
There’s anther issue t face. Current brain-scanning methds require slicing up a brain, which nly wrks with a dead subject. Michael S.A. Grazian is a neurscientist at Princetn University in New Jersey. He recently wrte in The Wall Street Jurnal, “T uplad a human brain, we prbably want a scanner that desn’t kill the subject ... The mst wildly ptimistic predictins place mind uplading within a few decades, but I wuld nt be surprised if it tk centuries.”
Sme peple are willing t wait. The memry research cmpany Nectme is based in San Francisc, Califrnia. In 2018, the grup annunced it was wrking t preserve brains just as a persn dies. The idea is that in the future, if the technlgy is ever ready, scientists culd bring that mind back t life. They’d prbably resurrect (使复活) it in a cmputer simulatin, virtual-Frankenstein-style. Ken Haywrth is a neurscientist and president f the Brain Preservatin Fundatin in Virginia. He tld MIT Technlgy Review, “If the brain is dead, it’s like yur cmputer is ff, but that desn’t mean the infrmatin isn’t there.”
D yu find the idea f brain uplads creepy r cl? D yu think a digital cpy f yur brain wuld still be yu? Wuld yu sign up t preserve yur brain fr the future?
32. Why are neurns imprtant in future brain uplads?
A. Because they can be stred frm utside.B. Because they cntrl bdy mvements.
C. Because they can make ther cells regenerate.D. Because they stre persnal memries and traits.
33. What did the research in 2019 shw?
A. Mapping ut neurns in a muse brain was an easy prcess.
B. It’s impssible t uplad human brains any time sn.
C. It’s nw pssible fr us t uplad a brain when the subject is alive.
D. Researchers succeeded in string the infrmatin f an entire human brain.
34. What is Ken Haywrth mst likely t agree with?
A. It will take ages befre we can uplad ur brains.
B. The brain still stres all the infrmatin even after it is dead.
C. The service the cmpany Nectme prvides is nthing but a lie.
D. Even thugh we can uplad ur brains, we wuld nt be the same persn.
35. What des the article mainly talk abut?
A. The benefits f uplading ur brains.
B. The impssibility f uplading a human brain.
C. The challenges we face in uplading ur brains.
D. The preparatins we need t make fr uplading a human brain.

Fr thse wh make jurneys acrss the wrld, the speed f travel tday has turned the cuntries int a series f villages. Distances between them appear n greater t a mdern traveler than thse which nce faced men as they walked frm village t village. Jet plane fly peple frm ne end f the earth t the ther, allwing them a freedm f mvement undreamt f a hundred years ag.
Yet sme peple wnder if the revlutin in travel has gne t far. A price has been paid, they say, fr the cnquest (征服) f time and distance. Travel is smething t be enjyed, nt endured (忍受). The bat ffers leisure and time enugh t appreciate the ever-changing sights and sunds f a jurney. A jurney by train als has a special charm abut it. Lakes and frests and wild, pen plains sweeping past yur carriage windw create a grand view in which time and distance mean nthing. On bard a plane, hwever, there is just the blank blue f the sky flying the narrw windw f the airplane. The sft lighting, in-flight films and gentle music make up the nly wrld yu knw, and the hurs prgress slwly.
Then there is the time that is spent being “prcessed” at a mdern airprt. Peple are cnveyed (运输) like rbts alng walkways; baggage is weighed, tickets prduced, examined and prduced yet again befre the passengers mve again t anther waiting area. Jurneys by rail and sea take lnger, yes, but the hurs that are devted t being “prcessed” at departure and arrival in airprts are luckily absent. N wnder, then, that the mdern high-speed trains are winning back passengers frm the airlines.
Man, hwever, is nw a wrld traveler and cannt turn his back n the airplane. The wrking lives f t many peple depend upn it; whle new industries have been built arund its design and peratin. The hliday maker, t, with limited time t spend, patiently endures the busy airprts and limited space f the flight t gain thse extra hurs and even days, relaxing in the sun. Speed cntrls peple’s lives; time saved, in wrk r play, is the imprtant thing — r s we are tld. Perhaps thse first hrsemen, riding free acrss the wild, pen plains, were enjying a better wrld than the ne we knw tday. They culd travel at will, and the clck was nt their master.
36. What des the authr try t express in Paragraph 1?
A. Travel by plane has speeded up the grwth f villages.
B. The speed f mdern travel has made distances relatively shrt.
C. The freedm f mvement has helped peple realize their dreams.
D. Man has been fnd f travelling rather than staying in ne place.
37. Accrding t Paragraph 3, why are passengers turning back t mdern high-speed trains?
A. Because they pay less fr the tickets.
B. Because they feel safer during the travel.
C. Because they can enjy higher speed f travel.
D. Because they dn’t have t waste time being “prcessed”.
38. What des the last sentence f the text mean?
A. They wuld enjy free and relaxing travel.B. They needed the clck t tell the time.
C. They preferred travelling n hrseback.D. They culd travel with their master.
39. What is the main idea f the text?
A. Air travel benefits peple and industries.
B. Train travel has sme advantages ver air travel.
C. Great changes have taken place in mdern travel.
D. The high speed f air travel is gained at a cst.
40. What is the authr’s attitude tward travel by air?
A. UnclearB. IndifferentC. NeutralD. Optimistic

Fr three days I ate junk fd alne. On the furth day I needed sme real fd. I made my way thrugh the fd line and tipted t a table, where I cllapsed in 57 . Suddenly I heard a crash that sunded 58 . He didn’t slide ut as I had expected. 59 , he turned arund and began preparing anther tray. And that’s when I realized I had been taking myself t 60 .
Wh 61 whether I drpped a tray r whether I shwed up in the wrng lecture? Nbdy. Ppularity was nt s imprtant in cllege.
