Fr many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a lng war, but years g by withut any clear winner. Like a brder cnflict between neighbring cuntries, the parent-teen war is abut bundaries: Where is the line between what I cntrl and what yu d?
Bth sides want peace, but neither feels it has any pwer t stp the cnflict. In part, this is because neither is willing t admit any respnsibility fr starting it. Frm the parents’ pint f view, the nly cause f their fight is their adlescents’ cmplete unreasnableness. And f curse, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except ppsitely. Bth feel trapped.
In this article, I’ll describe three n-win situatins that cmmnly arise between teens and parents and then suggest sme ways ut f the trap.
The first n-win situatin is quarrels ver unimprtant things. Examples include the clr f the teen’s hair, the cleanliness f the bedrm, the preferred style f clthing, the child’s failure t eat a gd breakfast befre schl, r his tendency t sleep until nn n the weekends.
Secnd, blaming. The gal f a blaming battle is t make the ther admit that his bad attitude is the reasn why everything ges wrng.
Third, needing t be right. It desn’t matter what the tpic is—plitics, the laws f physics, r the prper way t break an egg—the pint f these arguments is t prve that yu are right and the ther persn is wrng, fr bth wish t be cnsidered an authrity—smene wh actually knws smething—and therefre t cmmand respect. They learned cycling safety and practicing skills utdrs while raising their heart rate and just having fun. The students cmpleted standardized questinnaires befre and after the prgram designed t measure their health.
“We knw cycling can benefit the bdy. Our research shws hw it benefits the mind and scial relatinships as well. Bike riding can be an ideal activity fr adlescents because f the benefits it ffers,” said Wilsn.
“Cycling engages several parts f brain functin. Yu are lking at yur hearing, yu’re balancing, yu’re navigating and turning. Oftentimes, yu’re ding it with smene else, s there’s the psitive effect f cmpany r grup activity,” said Allan Reiss, a prfessr at Stanfrd University Schl f Medicine.
While exercise has pwerful mental health benefits, it’s nt universal. Many parents f teenagers have knwn this t be true and find ways t be present withut trying t start a cnversatin. One friend f mine quietly des husewrk each evening in the sitting rm where her teenagers watch TV.They enjy each ther’s cmpany withut the need t talk.Anther friend usually accepts his daughter’s invitatin t wrk r read nearby while she sits and des her hmewrk.Perhaps, that,at least fr sme families,is the best way fr a teenager and their parents t stay clse.
In fact, many years f research suggests that children use their parents as a safe base(基地,大本营) frm which t explre the wrld.Studies tell us that yung children quietly fllw their parents’ mvements frm rm t rm,even while ging n with their wn activities.Perhaps ur teens, like babies, feel mst at ease when their parents are still arund. They dn’t want t stay away frm parents wh allw them freedm.
A new schl year is at hand,s as parents we culd ffer ur teenagers a “ptted flwer”,as a gift, whse quiet and steady(稳定的) presence will give them a great day.
