Unit 1 FriendsReading-Best friendsI. Teaching ObjectivesKnowledge Objectives1) To learn some adjectives to describe people’s appearance and personality;2) To identify main ideas to obtain information about a friend.Ability ObjectivesTo guess general meaning from keywords and context;To skim text for specific information about people from the descriptions.Affective objectives(Attitude and value)To help the students to have correct attitudes towards friendship, and to get them to know what the important qualities of a good friend are.II. Teaching MethodsCollect and present information about friends by using the pictures, music, charts, assigning listening and reading tasks, etc; Help Ss relate the new knowledge with their personal experience, daily life to form their correct attitudes towards friendship.III. Learning waysLearn by completing the tasks assigned by the teacher, think actively by using their existing knowledge and exchanging ideas.IV. Teaching focus & difficulties1)Teach how to describe people’s appearance, personalities and abilities with appropriate adjectives;2)Teach how to identify specific information about people from their descriptions.V. Teaching AidsTextbook, MultimediaVI . Teaching ProceduresStep 1 Leading-in Ask Ss some questions, have them think about how important friends are in their daily life. Play the song “Shining Friends” with the lyrics on the screen to get Ss to think about the role friendship plays in our life.Step 2 Word-familiesPresent some familiar adjectives to Ss and ask them to sort them into words describing appearance and personality, explain the two words(appearance, personality) to consolidate Ss’ understanding .Step 3 Presentation 1. Show a photo of the teacher’s friend and let students describe her appearance. 2. Teacher says: My friend is very generous, because she often shares things with others. I can tell her anything because she won’t tell others my secrets. She can always keep a secret. I am very happy when I am with her because she often tells jokes. She often makes me laugh. She has a good sense of humour. 3. Write ‘generous, keep a secret, tell jokes, have a good sense of humour’ on the blackboard. Step 4 ListeningBefore Ss do the reading, have them listen to the recording of the text to fill missing information describing people’s appearances in blanks, and then get them to choose the correct picture for each person described in the articles.Step 5 Reading 1. Fast reading: get the students to read the text quickly and then find out the information about their friends’ personalities. 2. Intensive reading: let students read the passage again , and have them do some T or F judgments.3. Help them understand some key words by explaining the key information.Step 6 Vote for the best friend1. ‘Teenagers’ magazine now invites students to vote for the best friend. Help Amy, Simon and Sandy vote for their best friends. 2. Let students vote for the best friends in their class. 3. Show some pictures of famous people around the world, ask Ss whether they want to make friends with them if possible, let them describe these people with some adjectives they’ve learned.Step 7 Discussion Have Ss discuss the situations below that happen to him/her and what they will think of their friends.You had a nice weekend but forgot to do your homework, your best friend let you copy his own.You like playing computer games very much but you didn’t have enough money to play one day, so you went to your friend to borrow some money, but he refused you and told the teacher that you were going to play computer games.Step 8 Guessing gameLet the Ss to describe one of their classmates, and let the others guess who he/ she is . Step 9 Summary—important qualities of a good friend1. Ask Ss to write down the important qualities of friends in their minds on paper and then make a brief summary about that to have Ss form the correct attitude towards friendship.2. Let Ss listen to a song—We are friends. Step 10 HomeworkRecite all the new words and phrases learned in class.Write a short passage about your best friend and use suitable adjectives to describe him/her.VII. FeedbackVIII.
