A cntributing factr t its rise in 2021— aside frm its bvius relatin t the COVID vaccine drive— is its adaptability, accrding t Fina McPhersn, a senir editr f The Oxfrd English Dictinary. It can mean either vaccine r vaccinatin as a nun and vaccinate as a verb, and it is the rt f many ther phrases such as ―vax cards‖, ―vax passprts‖, and
―getting vaxxied‖. The wrd has als been changed int ther inventive wrds like vaxxie, a selfie taken during r immediately befre r after ne‘s vaccinatin. ―It has made the mst striking impact,‖ said Fina MePhersn.
Vax and vaxx are bth accepted spellings, but the frm with ne x is mre cmmn. Calling vegetables and fruits “ugly” can be a recipe fr sales success, accrding t a new study.
A French supermarket chain made internatinal headlines when it began marketing misshapen prduce as “ugly” in 2014. Since then, fd stres arund the wrld have launched campaigns t sell “imperfect prduce”. Sme have been successful, while thers haven’t — but until nw, researchers hadn’t adequately explained why cnsumers rejected imperfect prduce, r what marketing apprach was mst likely t whet their appetites.
The researchers cnducted seven studies that tested the effects f “ugly” labeling by having participants purchase prduce at a farmer’s market and nline, and by examining peple’s impressins abut misshapen fds. Interestingly, they fund that cnsumers expected the imperfect prduce t be less tasty and even less nutritius than mre traditinally attractive fds.
But it’s nt all bad news fr unattractive fds. The researchers als fund that when the prduce is labeled “ugly”, cnsumer hesitancy disappears — and it’s nt because f humr r riginality. Calling items “ugly” signals t cnsumers that the nly difference between items is appearance, which makes them aware f their bias (偏见) and significantly increases their willingness t buy the less attractive prduce.
“We’re pinting t the surce f the rejectin,” explains Jhn Meredith, the lead researcher. “It makes peple aware f the limited nature f their bjectin t the unattractive prduce and makes it clear t cnsumers that there are n ther prblems in the prduce ther than attractiveness.”
The research als fund cnsumers spent mre n the misshapen prduce labeled “ugly” instead f “imperfect”. And even thugh the ugly prduce was sld at a 25 percent discunt, it turned ut t be mre prfitable fr sellers, as the cst f acquiring the ugly prduce was lwer. Hwever, if the price reductin was t sharp, participants expected the “ugly” fds t be f lw quality.
28. What is the new study mainly abut?
A. Fd quality.B. Marketing apprach.
C. Cnsumer demand.D. Bias against appearance.
29. What des the underlined phrase “whet their appetites” in paragraph 2 refer t?
A. Stimulate their desire f buying.B. Satisfy their need t eat better.
C. Discurage them frm trying ut.D. Raise their cncerns abut nutritin.
30. Why are peple willing t buy ugly-labeled prduce withut hesitatin?
A. They are happy t spend less and have mre.
B. They are curius abut the special shapes f prduce.
C. They are attracted by the funny and creative idea f labeling.
D. They are led t believe ugly prduce has n quality prblems.
31. Which way helps fd sellers make mre prfit accrding t the study?
A. Call the ugly prduce “ugly”.B. Label the ugly prduce “imperfect”.
C. Grup the prduce by its attractiveness.D. Price the ugly prduce at a sharp discunt.

Since pre-industrial times, the wrld’s ceans have warmed by an average f 1 degree Celsius. Nw researchers reprt that thse rising temperatures have led t widespread changes in the ppulatin size f marine(海洋的)species.
A new study frm the University f Bristl,UK, aims t find ut hw climate change is impacting the distributin, ppulatin and seasnality f marine species.
The study’s senir authr,Martin Genner, an evlutinary eclgist, said: “We fund the same trend acrss all grups f marine life we lked at, frm planktn(浮游生物)t marine invertebrates(无脊椎动物),and frm fish t seabirds. ”
Based n these findings, researchers reasned that marine species shuld be ding well at the leading edge f their ranges but prly at their trailing side.
The study fund that 304 widely distributed marine species ver the last century were indeed mre abundant(大量的)at the pleward ends f their sample range. This suggests that marine species haven’t managed t adapt t warmer cnditins. They may cntinue t mve pleward as sea temperatures increase further, impactiing the livelihd f equatrward castal twns.
“This matters because it means that climate change is nt nly leading t abundance changes, but affects the perfrmance f species lcally,” Genner said. “While sme marine life may benefit as the cean warms,we will als see cntinued lss f marine in the near future. ”
The researchers said that mre wrk is needed t understand hw climate change has affected marine life in all regins f the wrld in greater detail. Genner questined, “Is this mainly related t the physilgical(生理的)limits f the species, r instead due t changes in the species with which they interact?”
32. What des the new study frm the University f Bristl try t discver?
A. Hw many marine species the climate change influences.
B. Directins in which marine species mve in different seasns.
C. Hw the climate change affects the ppulatin f marine species.
D. Similarities between certain species affected by the climate change.
33. What did the study find?
A. There are new marine species in the ples.
B. At least 304 marine species were less widely distributed.
C. There is a sharp decline in the number f marine species.
D. The abundance f many marine species increased n pleward sides.
34. What des the finding suggest?
A. Climate change can make the cast inhabitable.
B. Marine species haven’t adjusted t warmer temperatures.
C. Marine species may cntinue t mve tward the equatr.
D. Ocean warming imprves the envirnment fr marine species.
35. Accrding t the text, what shuld future research fcus n?
A. The interactin amng marine species.
B. The physilgical limits f marine species.
C. The ther pssible factrs behind this trend.
D. The changes in the perfrmance f lcal species.
