    The Beauty f Embracing Aging
    By Charles M. Blw
N ne really tells us hw we're suppsed t age, hw much fighting against it and hw much acceptance f it is the right balance.
The pet Dylan Thmas tld us we shuld "rage, rage against the dying f the light," that "ld age shuld burn and rave at clse f day." He died, sadly, befre turning 40. Fr thse f us well past that mark, rage feels futile, like a misallcatin f energy.
My mther, wh lives alne, suffered a strke. She wuld fully recver, but the image f her in that hspital bed shk me and has remained with me. In that mment, I was reminded that my mther was in the final chapter f her life, and that I was mving int a new phase f mine. That is ne f the prfund, emtinal parts f aging: assuming a new familial rle.
The actress Jenifer Lewis, appearing n the natinally syndicated radi shw "The Breakfast Club," nce remarked: "I'm 61. I gt abut 30 mre summers left." Since hearing thse wrds, I've thught f my wn life in that way, in terms f hw many summers I might have left.
I dn't cnsider these questins because I'm wrried, but because I want t remind myself t relish. Relish every summer day.
I have n intentin f raging against my aging. I intend t embrace it, t embrace the muscle aches and the crw's feet as the price f grwing in wisdm and grace.
