One night I felt s pwerless that I gt dwn n my knees and pleaded fr help. “Please Gd, I can’t d anything mre fr my sn. I’m at the end f my rpe. I’m giving the whle thing up t yu.”
I was at wrk when I gt a phne call. A man intrduced himself as the headmaster. “I want t talk t yu abut Karl’s absences.” Befre he culd say anther wrd, I chked up and all my disappintment and sadness ver Karl came puring ut int the ears f this stranger. “I lve my sn but I just dn’t knw what t d. I’ve tried everything t get Karl t g back t schl and nthing has wrked. It’s ut f my hands.” Fr a mment there was silence n the ther end f the line. The headmaster seriusly said, “Thank yu fr yur time”, and hung up.
Karl’s next reprt card shwed a marked imprvement m nis grades. Finally, he even made the hnr rll. In his furth year, I attended a parent- teacher meeting with Karl. It happened t me recently. I was telling smene hw much I had enjyed reading Barack Obama’s Dreams Frm My Father and hw it had changed my views f the frmer President. A friend I was talking t agreed with me that it was, in his wrds, “a brilliantly (精彩地) written bk”. Hwever, he then went n talking abut Mr. Obama in a way which suggested he had n idea f his backgrund at all. I sensed that I was talking t a bk liar.
And it seems that my friend is nt the nly ne. Apprximately tw thirds f peple have lied abut reading a bk which they haven’t. In the Wrld Bk Day’s “Reprt n Guilty Secrets”, Dreams Frm My Father is at number 9. The reprt lists ten bks, and varius authrs, which peple have lied abut reading, and as I’m nt ne t li e t ften (I’d hate t be caught ut), I’ll admit here and nw that I haven’t read the entire tp ten. But I am pleased t say that, unlike 42 percent f peple, I have read the bk at number ne, Gerge Orwell’s 1984. I think it’s really brilliant.
The Wrld Bk Day reprt als has sme ther interesting infrmatin in it. It says that many peple lie abut having read Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Fydr Dstevsky (I haven’t read him, but haven’t lied abut it either) and Herman Melville.
Asked why they lied, the mst cmmn reasn was t “impress” smene they were speaking t. This culd be tricky if the cnversatin became mre in- depth!
But when asked which authrs they actually enjy, peple named J. K. Rwling, Jhn Grisham, Sphie Kinsella (ah, the big sellers, in ther wrds). Frty- tw percent f peple asked admitted they turned t the back f the bk t read the end befre finishing the stry (I’ll cme clean—I d this and am astnished that 58 percent said they had never dne s).

A. By discussing the bk itself.B. By mentining a famus name.
C. By lking int his backgrund.D. By judging his manner f speaking.
29. Which f the fllwing is a “guilty secret” accrding t the Wrld Bk Day. reprt?
A. Dreams Frm My Father is hardly read.B. The authr admitted having read 9 bks.
C. 42% f peple pretended t have read 1984.D. Charles Dickens is very lw n the tp- ten list.
30. Why d peple lie abut reading?
A. T make mre friends.B. T appear knwledgeable.
C. T avid a tricky situatin.D. T start an in- depth cnversatin.
31. What is the authr’s attitude t 58% f readers?
A. Uncaring.B. Favrable.C. Friendly.D. Dubtful.

Yawning (打哈欠) is smething we all d— maybe because we’ re bred carrying ut bring tasks r because we’ re tired. Smetimes, just seeing ther peple yawn can set yu ff. But is this bilgical functin really cntagius (传染的), and why d we d it in the first place?
Many f us think we pen ur muths when we yawn t take in mre xygen, but in fact it appears that there is n clear bilgical reasn. Accrding t BBC Bitesize, new research suggests it might be because yawning cls the brain dwn and prevents it frm verheating, much like the fan in yur laptp. This might be why we’ re mre likely t feel sleepy and yawn in warm temperatures.
What is clear is that we yawn mre when we’ re exhausted and ready fr a nap, and we can’t cntrl when we d it— nce we start, there’s n stp ping us! But it’s als true that yawning is a very cntagius behavir. Jhn Drury, a researcher frm Sussex University fund in his research that there is a cnnect in between yawning and ur scial grup, specifically hw clse we are t the peple in it. If we identify with the persn wh exhibits the behavir, we are likely t cpy it t.
Anther research by the University f Nttingham in 2017 fund similar results. They asked vlunteers t watch ther peple yawn. They fund their ability t resist yawning when thers arund them yawned was limited. And the urge t yawn was increased when peple were tld they culdn’t. They als fund, when using electrical stimulatin (刺激), that they were able t increase peple’s desire t yawn. These findings, they say, culd be useful in treating ther cnditins like Turette syndrme (综合症), which invlve the same area f the brain.
What is certain is that a yawn can creep up n us at any time even when we think we’ re nt tired— but, I hpe, nt when yu’ re reading this article!
32. What is the purpse f the first paragraph?
A. T share backgrund infrmatin.B. T intrduce the tpic f the text.
C. T present the main idea f the text.D. T encurage independent thinking.
33. Accrding t paragraph 2, why d peple yawn?
A. T fight tiredness.B. T get mre xygen.
C. T stp the brain breaking dwn.D T lwer the brain’s temperature.
34. The University f Nttingham researchers fund that ________.
A. yawning is nt a cntagius behavir.B. the urge t yawn can’t be cntrlled.
C. peple can be influenced by thers’ yawning.D. electrical stimulatin helps hld back yawning.
35. What is the text mainly abut?
A. The reasns fr yawning.B. The influence f yawning.
C The value f yawning research.D The methds f yawning research.
