As the days passed, Lily started t distance herself frm me mre and mre. I didn’t understand what was ging n. S ne afternn, I decided t ask her why. “I just made new friends and they were mre fun.” she answered. At that mment, I culd hear my heart breaking. I walked hme, feeling lst and alne.

Tday, the imaginatin f ging smewhere in a car with n ne in the driver’s seat has cme true. Hwever, the self-driving cars still ask a human t be ready t take ver driving if needed.
Knwn as autnmus cars, they can make ging anywhere much mre cnvenient. The adults ften spend mre than 300 hurs behind the wheel each year. Self-driving cars culd give them that time back.
In additin, autnmus cars may pssibly transfrm what a car is and hw it wrks. Think abut it. With n need fr a driver, des there need a driver’s seat r a steering wheel? Self-driving cars culd have cuches, beds r even an entire kitchen. Passengers culd sit and talk with ne anther face t face r g t sleep at the start f a drive and wake up in a new place. A chef culd prepare a meal while n the way t deliver it t yur hme. The inside f a car culd als be an ffice, hair saln, r persnal gym. Suddenly, cars are much mre than just a way t get frm ne place t anther.
But a future f cars driving themselves arund city streets with n ne inside is still years away. That’s because the technlgy behind autnmus vehicles isn’t perfect yet. The cameras and ther systems that self-driving cars use t guide themselves have truble “seeing” the rad in bad weather r heavy traffic. They als have difficulty dealing with different types f rads. The cnversatinal tne f an AI chatbt r vice-based assistant seems like a gd way t learn new cncepts, but they may actually make us mre willing t believe inexact infrmatin cmpared with that presented like a Wikipedia article.

Participants were asked t rate the accuracy, trustwrthiness, and believability f the infrmatin n a seven-pint scale, where 7 is entirely accurate. In the answers where errrs were intrduced, infrmatin presented in a text-based frm was rated as 4.24. The ChatGPT-like setup managed 4.76, while the vice assistant scred 5.29.
“It’s lng been understd that peple are easily cnvinced (确信) that bjects that display r mimic lifelike qualities are in fact alive,” says Mike Katell at the Alan Túring Institute, UK. “It’s nt surprising that peple find cnversatinal chat assistants mre cnvincing and reliable than text because humans seem t be used t see life where it desn’t exist and t give trust t things that seem lifelike.”
The way the chatbts and vice agents are prgrammed t use a friendly and helpful cnversatinal tne als cnfuses peple, says Katell. “The makers f chatbts aren’t necessarily trying t fl us, but they are trying t put users at ease. The gal f a large language mdel is’ seemingly reasnable’ and that is achieved thrugh believable cntent and a friendly delivery.”
Utz says it is imprtant t recgnize. that the presentatin f infrmatin can affect hw much we believe it. “Peple nw have learned that. these mdels hallucinate (产生幻觉) smetimes,” she says. “But what peple d nt knw yet is that just this interactin mde makes us mre likely t believe whatever is written there.”
