I’m just ne mre guy, with a mental health cnditin.” His penness and emtins struck the judges f NPR’s Cllege Pdcast Challenge, earning him a $5,000 schlarship.
The idea fr his pdcast stemmed frm a cnversatin with his girlfriend, Elizabeth Pella. “Of curse I had t tell her what is happening t me,” says the 22-year-ld internatinal student. It was a big deal fr him t tell her. He was living far frm his family back in Clmbia, speaking his secnd language, and Pella wuld be the first persn utside f his family he’d tld.
The cnversatin went well, and Pella was understanding, curius, and lving. But she had ne request: Dn’t tell my friends. She was wrried that they wuld judge him and even judge her. “I was scared.” she says, “and I wanted t prtect him, t.”
Pella’s request didn’t sit well with Vargas. He didn’t just want t tell his girlfriend and her friends. Instead, he thught he shuld shw everyne what it was like living in his head. In The Mnsters We Create, Vargas prvides a raw glimpse int his daily battles, cnversing with the vices in his head. Thrugh creative sund effects and metaphrs, he breaks dwn steretypes cncerning mental illness.
After winning the NPR cntest, he called his parents t tell them. Thrugh tears, his mm, Olga Arang, tld him in Spanish that she’s crying fr jy, fr happiness. “I knw that we’re blessed with a really beautiful persn, and every day I tell him nt t change,” says his mm t NPR.
Nt changing, Vargas says, is the biggest lessn he learned in telling his stry. He says he’s n lnger scared t tell peple wh he really is.

    “C’mn. Everyne’s ding it.” S why shuldn’t yu?
It’s almst expected that yu will experience peer pressure frequently thrughut yur teen years. Say yu’re invited t a party where yu knw there will be alchl. A friend decides t cut class. Or smene ffers yu a cigarette. Hw d yu respnd?
At sme pint, everyne has the desire t fit int a grup. If yu’re interested in sprts, yu might hang ut with the jcks. If yu’re interested in music, yu spend time with thers wh enjy music. Yu belng t that grup and feel secure when yu are part f it. The grup identifies wh yu are and what yu’re abut. But what if peple in yur grup start ding things that are wrng, hurtful, r even illegal? And what if these same peple are yur friends?
This is what we refer t as peer pressure-the pressure t cnfrm t the behavirs, attitudes, and persnal habits f the grup. In many cases, there are serius risks invlved. Unfrtunately, mst teenagers feel invulnerable, like “nthing bad can ever happen t me”. But yu need t assess the risks well in advance.
On the ther hand, yu can use peer pressure t yur advantage. Think f it as cmpetitive peer pressure. Fr example, if yu’re active in sprts, yur teammates prbably pressure yu t be the best yu can be. If yu’re n the track team, yu pace yurself with the fastest runner, because yu knw it will make yu better. If yu’re striving fr gd grades, yu cmpare yur scres t thse at the tp f the list. If yu’re in the band, and there are musicians better than yu, yu are pressured int striving t be the best musician yu can be.
Nw is yur chance t believe in yurself and t stand alne at times, if yu need t. When faced with grup demands, assess the risks ahead f time, then make yur wn chice.
    28. Hw des the authr characterize peer pressure?
    A. As a harmless aspect f scializatin.
    B. As an ccasinal experience in teen years.
    C. As a phenmenn teens encunter frequently.
    D. As a rare ccurrence certain individuals cme acrss.

    A. By making friends in peer grups.
    B. By agreeing with the majrity's pinins.
    C. By adapting t thers’ behavirs t fit in.
    D. By cmpeting with peers t imprve neself.
    31. Which wrd can best describe the authr’s attitude tward peer pressure?
    A. Objective.B. Tlerant.C. Favrable.D. Cnservative.

A new analysis f years f vcalizatins by sperm whales in the eastern Caribbean has fund that their system f cmmunicatin is mre sphisticated than previusly knwn, exhibiting a cmplex internal structure with a “phnetic alphabet”. Sperm whales, the largest f the tthed whales, cmmunicate using bursts f clicking nises—called cdas—sunding a bit like Mrse cde. The researchers identified similarities t aspects f ther animal cmmunicatin systems—and even human language.
The researchers are part f the Prject CETI Machine Learning Team. Using traditinal statistical analysis and artificial intelligence, they examined calls made by abut 60 whales recrded by the Dminica Sperm Whale Prject, a research prgram that has cllected large amunts f data n the species.
“Why are they exchanging these cdas? What infrmatin might they be sharing?” asked study c-authr Shane Ger, Prject CETI’s lead bilgist and Dminica Sperm Whale Prject funder, affiliated with Carletn University in Canada. “I think it’s likely that they use cdas t crdinate (协调) as a family, rganize babysitting, hunting and defense,” Ger explained.
Variatins in the number, rhythm and temp f the clicks prduced different types f cdas, the researchers fund. The whales, amng ther things, altered the duratin f the cdas and smetimes added an extra click at the end, like a suffix in human language.
Peple cmbine sunds-ften crrespnding t letters f the alphabet-t prduce wrds that carry meaning, and then prduce sequences f (连串的) wrds t create sentences t cnvey mre cmplex meanings. Fr peple, there are tw levels f cmbinatin. The lwer level is sunds t wrds. The higher level is wrds t sentences. Sperm whales als use a tw-level cmbinatin f features-first frm cdas, and then cdas are sequenced tgether as the whales cmmunicate.
“Human language is unique in many ways,” Ger said. “But I suspect we will find many patterns, structures and aspects thught t be unique t humans in ther species, including whales, as science e prgresses--and perhaps als 1teatures and aspects 5f animal cmmunicatins which humans d nt pssess.”
    32. What did the researchers find abut the cmmunicatin system f sperm whales?
    A. It lacks any frm f structure.
    B. It sunds like a telegraph cde.
    C. It is simple and straightfrward.
    D. It mainly cnsists f whistling sunds.
    33. What culd be the purpse f sperm whales’ cdas accrding t Ger?
    A. T entertain.
    B. T mark territry.
    C. T establish scial status.
    D. T crdinate family activities.
    34. What d human language and sperm whale cmmunicatin have in cmmn?
    A. Bth cmmunicate by gesture.
    B. Bth mstly rely n visual cues.
    C. Bth use a tw-level cmbinatin.
    D. Bth have mre than ne alphabet.
    35. Which f the fllwing is a suitable title fr the text?
    A. A new understanding f cmmunicatin
    B. The evlutin f sperm whale cmmunicatin
    C. Unlck the secrets f sperm whale cmmunicatin
    D. Cmpare human and sperm whale cmmunicatin systems
