One f the earliest frms f writing which is still being used tday is Chinese characters, r hanzi. The image f Chinese characters that many peple have is that they are all pictgrams (象形字), but this is far frm the case because pictgrams have very limited use. Simple pictgrams might be practical, fr example, if ne is making a shpping list f things t buy at the stre, but they are quite useless if ne is writing smething mre abstract (抽象的). S it is a mistake t say that written Chinese is a “picture language”.
Besides pictgrams, here are sme ther cmmn types f Chinese characters.
● Idegrams
First, there are simple idegrams. These are characters which prvide an abstract picture f an idea, but in an easy frm. Fr example, “up” is “上” while “dwn” is “下”.
● Cmpund Characters
Next we have a cmmn kind f hanzi: cmpund characters. These are where tw r mre characters are jined in ne character fr a new meaning. Sme f these are easy t understand. In many cases, hwever, the meanings f cmpund characters are mre difficult t wrk ut.
● Phnetic Lan Characters
Phnetic lan characters are the characters which started ut as pictgrams. Hwever, they are ften used t mean ther wrds that have the same prnunciatin. A gd example f this is “目”. While it can be used in mdern Chinese with the meaning “eye”, it is mst ften used t mean “a thing n a list”. The reasn is that Chinese has a wrd fr “a thing n a list” but lacks (缺少) a character fr it, s the wrd takes the character “目”, a character with the same prnunciatin.
● Phnetic-semantic Characters
A final kind f Chinese characters is by far the mst cmmn. These are phnetic-semantic characters. With phnetic-semantic characters, ne part f each character gives a clue (线索) t the prnunciatin, while the ther gives a clue t the meaning.
Over the centuries, it was thught that the difficulty f sme Chinese characters was keeping peple frm being able t learn them. Therefre, during the 1950s and 1960s, the Chinese gvernment rlled ut (推出) simplified Chinese characters.
27. Accrding t the passage, pictgrams ________.
A. are quite easy t writeB. have limited useC. are very difficultD. are quite useful
28. Which f the fllwing kinds des the character “梨” belng t?

C. Idegrams.D. Phnetic-semantic characters.
29. What can we learn frm the passage?

B. The meanings f many idegrams are difficult t wrk ut.
C. Phnetic lan characters usually have mre than ne meaning.
D. Phnetic-semantic characters are the same as cmpund characters.

Flw is als likely t reduce feelings f wrry, in turn encuraging creativity. And peple in flw reprt experiencing a sense f neness with what they’re ding, allwing fr tp perfrmance.
And scientists are still wrking t understand why certain activities are mre likely t cause flw than thers. While we dn’t knw fr sure, there are several ways t help peple enter flw.
Fr example, peple mre ften reprt finding flw when ding things they find mtivating, meaning activities they find purpse, meaning, r enjyment in. This may include jining in a favrite hbby, studying tpics yu find interesting, r even cmpleting satisfying chres. Likewise, it may be mre difficult t find flw in tasks yu d nly because yu have t, nt because yu want t.
Other research suggests balancing persnal skill level with the activity’s challenge is key fr finding flw. In ther wrds, if a task is t easy, yu may get distracted r feel bred. If it’s t challenging, yu may becme discuraged.
Still, ther studies suggest that it’s mst imprtant that activities have clear gals and allw yu t assess (评估) yur prgress alng the way. Fr example, peple ften find flw when playing games f chance, because mment-t-mment feedback (反馈) may be enugh t get them invlved deeply.
There are als steps yu can take t increase yur chances t enter flw. Find a quiet envirnment free frm nises. Break yur tasks int small, specific parts that are easy t track and learn frm. Set clear end gals that are challenging. If yu find the task t be bring, set up a mre difficult ne.
Mst imprtantly, dn’t fcus t much n reaching flw. That srt f thinking might just prevent yu frm finding it.
