T American visitrs, Iceland is a very interesting cuntry, partly because it is different in s many ways frm what he r she is used t seeing at hme. There are quite a few things that are nt dne, r that d nt exist n the island - quite a few "N's".
There is n pllutin, fr instance. N dgs are permitted in Reykjavik, the capital. There is n televisin n Thursdays r during the entire mnth f July, and nly three hurs f black-and-white TV the rest f the time. There is n hard liqur n Wednesdays and n beer at any time. There are n handguns; nly ne jail f thirty-five cells in the entire land – an admirable figure, even fr a small cuntry f 313,376 peple.
There is n army, air frce r navy. There is n tipping fr anything. There are n large stres pen n Saturdays r Sundays. Since Iceland is situated just under the Arctic Circle, there is n darkness in summer and d daylight in winter. But thanks t Gulf Stream, the climate is rather mild, with temperatures ranging frm 34 degrees Fahrenheit t 52 degrees in July.
The rules n televisin, liqur, and guns are the result f gvernmental decisin. But the absence f pllutin is due in great part t the fact that Iceland gets its pwer frm the enrmus geyser(间歇泉)and the thusands f ht springs that cme ut f the grund. They prvide all the energy needed by the cuntry. In fact, Iceland uses nly 3 percent f all its available pwer.
Iceland has been described as a demcratic independent cuntry where mre fish are caught and mre bks published per persn than anywhere else in the wrld. The Icelanders have always felt a particular lve fr literature. They cmpsed their first wrks in the ninth and tenth centuries AD. These wrks were pems and tales abut the kings, heres, and herines f Iceland and Nrway. At first the stries were memrized and passed frm generatin t generatin. Of the tens f thusands f ships n the cean bttm, nly a handful, less than ne percent, cntain negtiable treasure, such as gld and jewels. Mst give us a different, priceless treasure --- histry. A sunken ship lies in trust, preserved in the airless envirnment f the sea, and thse in deep water are especially well prtected. N dry land sites anywhere —except perhaps Egyptian tmbs --- are in a better state f preservatin than a vessel deep in the cean. A sunken ship, therefre, can be a rare windw thrugh which a mment in time is glimpsed.
This is nt t imply that sunken ships are always fund intact. Mst ships break up n the way dwn, hit the bttm at abut 100 miles per hur, and becme a chatic, cnfusing jumble (混乱的一堆). I recall the disappintment f a nvice diver wh , after surfacing frm an underwater tur f a 400-ft ship, asked his diving cmpanin, “Where was the wreck?” It takes experience t actually knw sunken ship when ne sees it.
But n matter what its cnditin n the way dwn, a ship deterirates(朽烂) much mre slwly as it sinks deeper int prtective layer f sand and mud. Ancient vessels have been fund in remarkably gd cnditin. In 1997 a grup f marine archaelgists excavating a 900-year-ld wreck recvered engraved glassware, Greek cins, brnze kettles, and amazingly, Greek jars cntaining seeds, almnds, and peanuts—even a plate with chicken bnes.

Suppse yu g int a fruit shp, wanting an apple--yu take up ne, and n biting it yu find it is sur; yu lk at it, and see that it is hard and green. Yu take up anther ne, and that, t, is hard, green, and sur. The shp man ffers yu a third; but ,befre biting it, yu examine it, and find that it is hard and green ,and yu immediately say that yu will nt have it, as it must be sur, like thse that yu have already tried.
Nthing can be mre simple than that, yu think; but if yu will take the truble t analyze and trace ut int its lgical elements what has been dne by the mind, yu will be greatly surprised.
Yu find that, in tw experiences, hardness and greenness in apples went tgether with surness. It was s in the first case, and it was cnfirmed by the secnd. It is a very small basis, but still it is enugh frm which t make an inductin(归纳). Yu fund upn that a general law that all hard and green apples are sre; and that, s far as it ges, is a perfect inductin. Well, having gt yur natural law in this way, when yu are ffered anther apple, which yu find it hard and green, yu say, " All hard and green apples are sur; this apple is hard and green; therefre, this apple is sur." And by further reasning, yu arrive at yur final determinatin, “I wn’t have that apple.”
Well nw, suppse, having gt yur cnclusin f the law, that at sme times afterwards, yu are discussing the qualities f apple with a friend; yu will say t him, "It is a very curius thing, but I find that all hard and green apples are sur!" Yur friend says t yu, "But hw d yu knw that?" Yu at nce reply, "Oh, because I have tried them ver and ver again, and have always fund them t be s" Well, if we were talking science instead f cmmn sense, we shuld call that an experimental verificatin(实验证明). And, if still ppsed, yu g further, and say, "I have heard frm peple. In Smersetshire and Devnshire, where a large number f apples are grwn, and in Lndn, where many apples are sld and eaten, that they have bserved the same thing. It is als fund t be the case in Nrmandy, and in Nrth America. In shrt, I find it t be the universal experience f mankind wherever attentin has been directed t the subject." Whereupn, yur friend ,unless he is a very unreasnable man, agrees with yu, and is cnvinced that yu are quite right in the cnclusin yu have drawn. He believes, althugh perhaps he des nt knw he believes it, that the mre extensive verificatins have been made, and results f the same kind arrived at--that the mre varied the cnditins under which the same results are attained, the mre certain is the ultimate cnclusin, and he disputes the questin n further. He sees that the experiment has been tried under all srts f cnditins, as t time ,place, and peple, with the same result; and he says with yu, therefre, that the law yu have laid dwn must be a gd ne, and he must believe it.
53.The example f “apples” are used .

B.eat the rest f the apple at nce t see if it is sur t
C.reject the law stating that hard and green apples are usually sur
D.cnduct further investigatins and make adjustments t the law f apples

Technlgy: Taking the gd withut the bad?
Very sn, unimaginably pwerful technlgies will remake ur lives. This culd have dangerus cnsequences, especially because we may nt even understand the basic science underlying them. There’s a grwing gap between ur technlgical capability and ur basic scientific understanding. We can d very clever things with the technlgy f the future withut necessarily understanding sme f the science underneath, and that is very dangerus.
The technlgies that are particularly dangerus ver the next hundred years are nantechnlgy (纳米技术), artificial intelligence and bitechnlgy. The benefits that they will bring are beynd dubt. But they are ging t be very, very dangerus. I’m wrking in the field f artificial intelligence. I have a mdel design fr smething that might be 50,000 millin times smarter than the human brain. Target date is 2010. The nly thing that's nt pssible in the film Terminatr(终结者) is that the peple win. If yu're fighting against technlgy which is 50,000 millin times smarter than yu, yu prbably will nt win.
Nantechnlgy. We've all heard f the grey glue prblem, that self-replicating nantech devices might keep n cpying until the wrld has becme sticky glue. And certainly in bitechnlgy, we've really gt a big prblem because it's cnverging with nantechnlgy and IT. Once yu start mixing nantech with rganisms and yu start feeding nantech-enabled bacteria, we can really g an awful lt further than the Brg in Star Trek(星际迷航). And thse superhuman rganisms might nt like us very much.
Eventually these technlgies will becme rutine. That’s a threat t humanity. I dn’t think it’s pssible t slw it dwn. S what we need t d is accelerate the scientific research and try t get sme extra tls. The prblems facing us in the future are getting bigger and bigger. I think if we dn’t get sme prper science dne, the future is hpeless indeed.
57.Frm the text, we knw that the authr’s greatest cncern is .
A.ur lack f technlgical understanding f the prcess invlved
B.ur lack f technlgical capability
C.creating technlgy withut really understanding the basic science
D.Our refusal t face the cnsequences f the technlgy we create
58.It can be inferred frm the text that the authr .
A.thinks peple verestimate (高估) the capabilities f technlgy
B.is nt ptimistic that artificial intelligence will always be used psitively
C.thinks that we shuld take science fictin mvies mre seriusly
D.believes artificial intelligence is the greatest threat we face technlgically
59.Why des the authr say it is nt pssible in the film Terminatr that the humans win?
A.Because the pwer f the technlgy is exaggerated(夸大).
B.Because the strength f the machines is much greater.
C.Because machines with that much intelligence can easily defeat humans.
D.Because human beings are nt curageus enugh t win the battle.
60.The authr’s attitude tward the advanced technlgies is .
A.wrriedB.psitiveC.interestedD.scared
