We already have iris(虹膜) and fingerprint scanning but nses culd be an even better methd f identificatin, says a study frm the University f Bath, UK.
The researchers scanned nses in 3D and characterized them. They fund 6 main nse types: Rman, Greek, Nubian, hawk, snub and turn-up. Since they are hard t hide, the study says, nses wuld wrk well fr identificatin.
The researchers say nses have been verlked in the grwing field f bimetrics, studies int ways f identifying distinguishing characters f peple. "Nses are ut- standing facial features and yet their use as a bimetric has been largely unexplred," said the University f Bath's Dr Adrian Evans. "Ears have been lked at in detail, eyes have been lked at in terms f iris recgnitin but the nse has been ignred."
The researchers used a system called Pht Face, develped by researchers at the University f the West f England in Bristl, fr the 3D scans.
Several measurements by which nses can be recgnized were identified and the team develped recgnitin sftware based n these parameters(范围)
“This initial wrk is nwhere as gd as iris identificatin but the nse has prs and cns," said Dr Evans.
There's n magic bimetric that slves all yur prblems. Irises are a pwerful bimetric but can be difficult t get accurately and can be easily cvered by eyelids r glasses. Peple can easily cver up their ears, with their hair fr example.
"Of curse yu can have a brken nse r wear a false nse r have plastic surgery but t have nse surgery t change yur identity is fairly bvius. Irises are very gd fr recgnitin but yu can put in dilatin drps which change the iris cmpletely. Nt all techniques are reliable," he said.
The research is based n a study f 40 nses and the data base has nw been expanded t 160 fr further tests t see if the sftware can pick ut peple frm a larger grup and distinguish between relatives.
Dr Evans hpes the methd can be prven t be effective n this larger sample. "The technique certainly shws ptential, perhaps t be used in cmbinatin with ther identificatin methds," he said.
