N ne lking at the state f Earth in 2023 can be in any dubt that we are facing three serius envirnmental prblems: climate prblem, lss f bidiversity (生物多样性) and pllutin f air, sil and water. T slve the prblems, we increase the use f electric cars, 41 greener eating and reduce plastic use. Hwever, smetimes these slutins can be ppsite t the expected gals. Fr instance, creating space fr bifuel crps t give ff fewer pllutants and greenhuse gases can, in fact, 42 increase the cutting dwn f trees. That means in mst cases slutins aiming at ne prblem each time are 43 t be effective. And, what is perhaps lacking is a(n) 44 f hw interlinked these prblems are.
We shuld realize that a key 45 linking all the three prblems is waste. The rt cause f glbal warming is CO2, a waste gas. The seas are plluted by plastic and ther waste prducts. We 46 frests, amng ther things, t grw mre fd — much f which ges t waste.
A shcking figure lies at the heart f ur special reprt n ur wrld — f the mre than 100 billin tns f things that humans use each year, hardly 10% is recycled. That makes it bvius a full-range war n waste shuld be paid 47 attentin. The situatin requires ur speedy mving away frm the way f thinking — “take, make, thrw” — twards a mre recyclable ne, which means we shuld begin 48 the prducts and when they reach the end f their useful lives, they can be recycled.
Slving the three prblems calls fr a huge transitin with jint effrts. Gvernments must take the lead by intrducing laws with the purpse f rewarding green practices, such as the 49 f waste. Industries can reduce, re-use and recycle wherever pssible, and 50 themselves with suppliers and the like-minded t realize recyclable business mdels.

The secnd tip is t ensure yur surrundings are as 58 as pssible. Simply being able t see yur clleagues makes the wrking day much mre 59 and the height f partitins (隔板) dividing up ffice space affects stress level. 60 , the higher the partitin is, the mre peple cmplain abut nise frm their neighbrs. Research frm the University f Mntreal shws that the ptimum partitin height is 1.3 metres—high enugh t prvide 61 but lw enugh t ensure staff d nt feel 62 .
The third piece f advice fr wrks is t learn t switch f. Mbile phnes and ther 63 equipment shuld be switched ff after hurs f wrking t allw burnt-ut brain cells t recharge. The furth piece f advice fr wrkers is t take a nap at yur desk every day, which is very easy t d.

Fr sme peple, music is n fun at all. Abut fur percent f the ppulatin is what scientists call “amusic.” Peple wh are amusic are brn withut the ability t recgnize r reprduce musical ntes (音调). Amusic peple ften cannt tell the difference between tw sngs. Amusics can nly hear the difference between tw ntes if they are very far apart n the musical scale.
As a result, sngs sund like nise t an amusic. Many amusics cmpare the sund f music t pieces f metal hitting each ther. Life can be hard fr amusics. Their inability t enjy music set them apart frm thers. It can be difficult fr ther peple t identify with their cnditin. In fact, mst peple cannt begin t grasp what it feels like t be amusic. Just ging t a restaurant r a shpping mall can be uncmfrtable r even painful. That is why many amusics intentinally stay away frm places where there is music. Hwever, this can result in withdrawal and scial islatin. “I used t hate parties,” says Margaret, a seventy-year-ld wman wh nly recently discvered that she was amusic. By studying peple like Margaret, scientists are finally learning hw t identify this unusual cnditin.
Scientists say that the brains f amusics are different frm the brains f peple wh can appreciate music. The difference is cmplex, and it desn’t invlve defective hearing. Amusics can understand ther nnmusical sunds well. They als have n prblems understanding rdinary speech. Scientists cmpare amusics t peple wh just can’t see certain clrs.
Many amusics are happy when their cnditin is finally diagnsed (诊断). Fr years, Margaret felt embarrassed abut her prblem with music. Nw she knws that she is nt alne. There is a name fr her cnditin. That makes it easier fr her t explain. “When peple invite me t a cncert, I just say, ‘N thanks, I’m amusic,’” says Margaret. “I just wish I had learned t say that when I was seventeen and nt seventy.”

Was yur schl nisy r peaceful? It might nt seem imprtant, but a grwing bdy f research suggests that sunds can have an impact n learning, perfrmance and creativity.
Whether backgrund sunds are beneficial r nt seems t depend n what kind f nise it is—and the vlume. In a series f studies published last year, Ravi Mehta frm the Cllege f Business at Illinis and his clleagues tested peple’s creativity while expsed t a sundtrack made up f backgrund nises—such as cffee-shp chatter and cnstructin-site drilling—at different vlumes. They fund that peple were mre creative when the backgrund nises were played at a medium level than when vlume was lw. Lud backgrund nise, hwever, damaged their creativity.
This makes sense fr a cuple f reasns, says psychlgist Dr Nick Perham, at Cardiff Metrplitan University in the UK, wh studies the effect f sunds n learning but was nt invlved in the study. Firstly, he says, sunds that are mst disturbing tend t be very variable. A general hum (嗡嗡声) in the backgrund suggests a steady-state sund with nt much variatin. “S there’s nt much there t capture yur attentin- nthing disturbing the subjects,” he says. At the same time, the backgrund nise might cause the subjects t be in a slightly heightened state f arusal (觉醒), says Perham. “Medium arusal is best fr gd perfrmance. S it might be that a general hum in the backgrund gives an ideal level f arusal.” With that in mind, Perham suggests there may be sme benefits t playing music r ther sunds in an art class r ther situatins where creativity is key.
Many teachers all ver the wrld already play music t students in class. Many are inspired by the belief that hearing music can imprve IQ in tasks, the s-called Mzart effect. While the evidence actually suggests it’s a stretch t say classical music imprves brainpwer, researchers d think pleasant sunds befre a task can smetimes lift yur md and help yu perfrm well, says Perham, wh has dne his wn studies n the phenmenn. The key appears t be that yu enjy what yu’re hearing. “If yu like the music r yu like the sund—even listening t a Stephen King nvel -then yu did better. It didn’t matter abut the music,” he says.
73. Which f the fllwing is true accrding t the studies by Ravi Mehta and Nick Perham?
A. It’s better nt t expse peple t any backgrund nise while at wrk.
B. Cnstructin-site drilling shuld be frbidden where there is a schl.
C. Nises will harm peple’s health hwever lw their vlumes are.
D. A certain level f nise may d gd t peple’s creativity.

A. keep the classrm quiet
B. play music at a steady and medium vlume
C. bradcast classical music
D. vary the vlume f the music cnstantly
75. In the last paragraph, the underlined part “it’s a stretch” is used t ________.
A. prve the usefulness f pleasing sunds
B. cnfirm the belief f Mzart effect
C. challenge the imprtance f sft music
D. cast dubt n the pwer f music in raising IQ

A new reprt says plastics are respnsible fr $13 billin in damage t the ceans and the undersea envirnment. The findings were annunced recently at a United Natins cnference. 77
Plastic thrwn away carelessly makes its way int rivers and ther waterways. The plastic eventually reaches castal areas and cean waters. After a while, it cllects in the sea. And plastic never ges away. Plastic is nt bidegradable — destryed by bacteria r natural prcesses. Instead, it just breaks up int smaller pieces ver time. The ceans cntain a lt f chemicals and ther pllutants. 78 . That means harmful materials may get int ur fd supply.
79 . Human beings cause pllutin and they can take steps t stp it. They can use fewer single use prduct cntainers and thrw plastics away crrectly. Plastic recycling prgrams als wrks — where ld bttles and ther plastics are cllected, brken dwn and used t make new prducts. We culd reuse bttles in ur husehlds many times if we wish t, rather than end it after the first use. We culd, when we get rid f that plastic, recycle and reuse it, which replaces the need fr raw materials.
The reprt als calls n cmpanies t imprve methds fr using plastics. 80 And it calls fr infrmatin abut the way plastic is thrwn ut r remved frm use. By putting a new value n plastic, industry has a special reasn t clean up the envirnment. But all f the cmpanies must jin t deal with the prblem.
