Greenland is Shrinking at Surprising Rate
A new study shws ne f the largest glaciers in Greenland is becming smaller and speeding t the sea faster than scientists expected. If it cntinues, Greenland itself culd becme much smaller during this century and glbal seas culd rise as much as 3 feet.

Greenland is the wrld’s largest island, cvering an area mre than three times the size f Texas. Sme 81 percent f it is cvered by ice, and there are many glaciers. Glaciers are like slw-mving rivers f ice. Where a glacier meets the sea, its weight keeps it firmly resting n the bttm. A glacier’s frnt is the pint where the water is deep enugh that the glacier flats.
Since the 1970s, the frnt f Helheim stayed in the same place. Then it began melting rapidly, mving back 4.5 miles frm 2001 thrugh this past summer. It has als grwn thinner, frm tp t bttm, by mre than 130 feet since 2001. And ver these past fur years, its trip t the sea has sped up frm abut 70 feet per day t nearly 110.
The melting is driven by a warmer climate. Temperatures in Greenland have risen mre than five degrees Fahrenheit in the last decade. Since mst f Greenland’s ice is n land, seas will rise as the ice melts. If all Greenland’s ice sheet melted, ceans wuld be 15-20 feet higher. Nbdy expects that t happen anytime sn.

    D. Sme castal cities may be under the sea.
