    Ancient builders acrss the wrld created structures that are still standing tday, thusands f years later. Yet the cncrete that makes up much f ur mdern wrld has a lifespan f arund 50 t 100 years. A grwing number f scientists have been studying materials frm lng-ag eras, hping t uncver hw they’ve held up fr millennia.
    Many researchers have turned t the Rmans fr inspiratin. Starting arund 200 BCE, the architects f the Rman Empire were building impressive cncrete structures that have std the test f time. Even in harbrs, where seawater has been battering structures fr ages, yu’ll find cncrete basically the way it was when it was pured 2,000 years ag. Mst mdern cncrete starts with Prtland cement, a pwder made by heating limestne and clay t super-high temperatures and crushing them. That cement is mixed with water t create a chemically reactive paste. Then, blcks f material like rck and gravel are added, and the cement paste mixes them int a cncrete mass. Accrding t recrds frm ancient architects, the Rman prcess was similar. The ancient builders mixed materials like burnt limestne and vlcanic sand with water and gravel, creating chemical reactins t stick everything tgether.
    In a study published earlier this year, Admir Masic, a civil and envirnmental engineer, prpsed that this pwer cmes frm blcks f lime that are scattered thrughut the Rman material instead f being mixed in evenly. Researchers used t think these blcks were a sign that the Rmans weren’t mixing up their materials well enugh. Instead, after analyzing cncrete samples frm Privernum — an ancient city utside f Rme — the scientists fund that the blcks culd fuel the material’s “self-healing” abilities.
