There’s a ppular miscnceptin that rhins are aggressive and stupid, but I discvered sensitive, affectinate animals. Weighing ver a tn, black rhins are unexpectedly agile and have an unpredictable nature. Given reassurance, they can be very trusting. In the past few decades, their numbers have drpped dramatically. In recent years, I’ ve helped lk after rhins being mved t sanctuaries(保护区), s they can frm new ppulatins in cuntries that have few left.
Last year, I helped n a prject t fly five black rhins frm a private reserve in Suth Africa t the Serengeti Natinal Park. Once there, the animals had t be kept captive fr a few weeks t adapt t the new envirnment, in which time they lived in “bmas”-wden enclsures(围场) with “bedrms”, designed t create a calm space.
A cuple f weeks befre their planned release, the sky filled with smke. Watching the flames rushing thrugh the bush tward the bmas, I frze. Terrified that it wuld catch fire, my instinct was t release the rhins, but hey hadn’t yet been fitted with transmitters. If I let them ut int a bushfire and they were injured, we’d have great difficulty tracking them dwn.
S I dashed back t the bmas and called the rhins t the bedrms. Sensing the fear in my vices, they mved withut hesitatin and remained astnishingly calm. It was crucial the rhins didn’t panic -they can easily hurt each ther if they d.
Meanwhile, the rangers managed t beat the clsest flames away. At last, after half an hur, the wind changed directin and the fire began t recede.
