Scientists have been measuring the area f the sea ice in Antarctica since 1979. That began t change arund 2016. Nw, fr several years, the area f Antartica’s sea ice has been getting smaller. This year, the US Natinal Snw and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) reprted that Antartica’s sea ice reached its maximum n September 10—almst tw weeks earlier than nrmal. And the sea ice was at a new recrd lw—nt just by a little bit, but by a lt.
The last time Antartica’s lw sea ice set a recrd at the end f winter was in 1986. And this year, there’s abut 1.03 millin square kilmeters less sea ice than in 1986. It’s hard t picture such a large area, but it’s arund 1.6 times the size f France.
Scientists are still trying t understand what is driving the change in Antarctica. Ted Scambs, a research scientist at the University f Clrad, says, “Antarctica’s ice levels have always changed sme, but the situatin this year is pinting twards warmer cean cnditins arund the area.”
