She studied bilgy at Munt St. Schlastica Cllege in Kansas, then gt a master’s degree frm the University f Pittsburgh. After returning t Kenya and pursuing her PhD (攻读博士学位) at the University f Nairbi, Wangari became the first wman in East Africa t receive a dctr’s degree.
In the 1970s, Wangari was an active member f the Natinal Cuncil f Wmen f Kenya. Wmen came t the cuncil in part t search fr slutins t the envirnmental prblems—defrestatin(滥伐森林) and desertificatin (荒漠化) had caused many f the resurces wmen relied n fr fd and clean water t decrease.
With her knwledge f bilgy and her passin fr helping thers, Wangari decided t take actin. Wangari had tw gals in mind: t help restre envirnmental resurces and give wmen the ability t supprt their families in a self-sufficient, sustainable way. T achieve her gals, she came up with a practical but effective idea: t plant trees. The trees wuld reduce the effects f defrestatin, in additin t prviding fd and firewd fr lcal families. Wangari’s plan inspired the frmatin f the Green Belt Mvement in 1977, an rganisatin devted t envirnmental prtectin and pverty reductin in Kenya.

In 1999 she led a prtest (抗议)against the privatisatin(私有化) f Karura Frest in Nairbi, during which Green Belt Mvement members were beaten by private guards. Despite facing nging ppsitin and even danger, Wangari’s belief in her wrk was never shaken.

In the mvie “The Wrng Trusers”, a pair f futuristic trusers lets peple walk n walls and ceilings. Inspired by the mvie, researchers in England created “The Right Trusers”, a set f trusers embedded(嵌入) with electrical pumps t frce air int tiny tubes that expand and can help elderly r disabled peple with issues like getting up r imprving bld flw. Nw, material scientists, cmputer prgrammers and fabric designers are wrking t advance rbtic clthing.
In June, researchers in Australia created rbtic fibers(纤维), which can make fabric mve autmatically. Last year, scientists at MIT built fiber batteries that culd be embedded int clthes and pwer rbtic clthing. In recent years, Ggle partnered with brands like Levi’s and Adidas t put sensrs in jackets, backpacks and shes, letting users access their phnes instantly. Researchers said they culd sn unlck an era where clthing will act mre like a cmputer, sensing hw yur bdy feels and telling yur clthes hw t help.
At the University f New Suth Wales in Australia, researchers are creating fabrics that can shape-shift. Thanh Nh D, a senir lecturer at the schl, said his team has created tiny tubes that can weave (编织)int sheets f fabric. These tubes can make fabric take varius preprgrammed shapes. But challenges still remain fr D’s team, ntably arund making these rbtic tubes smaller s they can weave easily with ther fabrics.
Rebecca Kramer Bttigli frm Yale University agreed that many challenges remain befre smart clthing “reaches their full ptential.” It will be challenging t make these clthes, equipped with fibers and technlgy, strng enugh t g thrugh multiple cycles in the laundry, she said. Despite that, she says researchers will figure ut a way frward. “Recent breakthrughs pint tward a nt-s-distant future where smart clthing will be a part f ur everyday life.” she said.
    28. What inspired the researchers t cme up with “The Right Trusers”?
    A. The way electrical pumps wrk. B. A bld issue.
    C. A film. D. The way the elderly and disabled mve.
    29. What did scientists at MIT d last year?

    C. They put sensrs in clthes. D. They released smart clthing cnnected t cellphnes.
    30. What des D’s team find challenging?
    A. Keeping rbtic tubes prperly shaped. B. Making rbtic tubes smaller.
    C. Prducing strnger rbtic tubes. D. Prgramming the shape f rbtic tubes.
    31. What is Rebecca’s attitude tward the future f smart clthing?
    A. Dubtful.B. Indifferent.C. Hpeful.D. Wrried.
    D.
Will chatbts that can generate fascinating articles destry educatin as we knw it?
New Yrk City’s Department f Educatin recently banned (禁止) the use f ChatGPT. “While the tl may be able t prvide quick and easy answers t questins,” says the fficial statement, “it des nt build critical-thinking skills, which are necessary fr academic and lifelng success.”
Banning such use f technlgy frm the classrm is a nearsighted respnse. Instead, we must find a way frward in which such technlgies cmbine well with, rather than replace, student think -ing.
Banning ChatGPT is impssible in practice. Students will find ways arund the ban, which will cause a further defensive respnse frm teachers and administratrs, and s n. It’s hard t believe that a clse race between thse digital natives and their educatrs will end in a decisive victry fr the latter. In fact, chatbts may well speed up a trend (趋向) tward valuing critical thinking. In a wrld where cmputers can fluently answer any questin, students need t get much better at decid -ing what questins t ask and hw t fact-check the answers the prgram generates.
S hw d we encurage yung peple t use their minds when real thinking is s hard t tell apart frm its simulacrum (假象)? Teachers f curse, will still want t watch students taking ld-fashined, in-persn, n-chatbt-allwed exams t check that they d nt cheat.
But we must als figure ut hw t d smething new: hw t use tls like GPT t inspire deeper thinking. GPT ften generates text that is fluent and “reasnable” — but wrng. S using it requires the same mental heavy lifting that writing des: frming an pinin, creating an utline, picking which pints t explain and which t drp, and lking fr supprting facts. GPT can help with thse tasks, but it can’t put them all tgether. Writing a gd essay still requires lts f human thught and wrk. Indeed, writing is thinking, and gd writing is gd thinking.
One apprach is t fcus n the prcess as much as the result. Fr instance, teachers might require fur drafts f an essay. After all, as Jhn McPhee, the famus writer, said, “the central nature f the prcess is revisin.” Each draft gets feedback frm the teacher, frm peers r even frm a chatbt. Then the students prduce the next draft, and s n.
Will AI ne day utperfrm human beings in thinking? Maybe, but fr nw, we must think fr urselves. Like any tl, GPT is an enemy f thinking nly if we fail t find ways t make it ur partner.
    32. Hw des the authr feel abut the ban?
    A. Understandable.B. Irrespnsible.C. Necessary. D. Unwise.
    33. Why is it impssible t ban ChatGPT in practice?
    A. Because schls will defend the ban. B. Because students are digitally fluent.
    C. Because ChatGPT will keep develping.D. Because peple treasure critical thinking.
    34. Hw des the authr explain his idea in Paragraph 6?
    A. By quting thers.B. By giving examples.
    C. By presenting facts.D. By shwing similarities.
    35. What is the passage mainly abut?
    A. Will GPT utperfrm students? B. Is GPT a prcess r a result?
    C. Why Chatbts becme a new trend?D. Hw can Chatbts serve educatin?
