As a child, Mate DeLa Rcha dreamed f wrking as a garbage man. In his hme city, trash piles were everywhere. The lcal sanitatin wrker was the nly persn cleaning up the pllutin.
DeLa Rcha’s family later mved t the United States. Nw as a high schl senir, he has fund a unique way t tackle pllutin: Alng with tw friends, he raised $11, 000 t plug an abandned il well in Ohi that was leaking gas clse t a barn n a hrse farm.
As many as 3. 9 millin abandned and aging il and gas wells are spread acrss the U. S. , accrding t the Envirnmental Prtectin Agency (EPA), and at least 126, 000 f these wells are “rphans”. This means there is n wner r cmpany t be held respnsible fr them.
The EPA estimates that abandned wells cllectively released 303. 000 tnnes f methane in 2022. That’s rughly equivalent. t the annual carbn dixide emissins f 23 gas-burning pwer plants.
After cmpleting his AP Envirnmental Science class, DeLa Rcha realized the issue f abandned wells was smething fr which individuals culd ptentially make a difference. He then invited tw classmates, Sebastian Ng and Lila Gisndi, t jin him.
“When Mate apprached me abut this, I lked int these methane wells and what we culd d abut them,” Ng said. “It kind f flipped a switch.” Previusly, he had felt helpless abut climate change but wuld simply jke abut the wrld ending.
Fr Gisndi, talking with her friends abut these methane-emitting wells brught climate change frm the back f her mind t the frefrnt. “It was smething that I felt I culd actually help with,” she said.
After mre research, the tri cnnected with The Well Dne Fundatin (WDF), a nnprfit rganizatin specializing in plugging rphaned wells. The rganizatin was funded by Curtis Shuck, a veteran f the il and gas industry. Since 2019, his rganizatin has surveyed mre than 1, 700 abandned wells natinwide and plugged 44 f what they identified as the mst prblematic nes.
On May 23, cntractrs pured the cement t plug the rphaned well in Ohi. With the initial success, DeLa Rcha, Ng and Gisndi are nw mre cnfident abut the future f their cause.

At a museum in Vietnam, Lena Bui’s film Where Birds Dance Their Last reflected n the vulnerability f Vietnamese feather farms after Bird Flu. During a festival in Rwanda, Ellen Reid’s audi experience Sundwalk was shared in a hpeful discussin abut music and mental health. Over the years, I have been wrking at the intersectin f scientific research and the arts t supprt science in slving glbal health challenges.
Science isn’t the nly key t addressing these issues. T achieve its ptential and reach all wh culd benefit, science depends n trust and gd relatinships. Peple might nt always see science as relevant, trustwrthy r meaningful t their lives. There are reasns why sme see science as having a chequered past, frm nuclear weapns t eugenics (优生学), and are therefre uninterested in, r suspicius f, what it prpses.
Science is pwerful t build upn and test an evidence base, but researchers and funders haven’t been as gd at ensuring this evidence base respnds t the needs and interests f diverse cmmunities, r infrms plicy makers t take actin. Science might be perceived as distancing itself frm the persnal, the petic and the plitical, yet it is these qualities that can be mst influential-when it cmes t public interest in a tpic r hw a gvernment priritizes a decisin.
A mving stry well tld can be mre memrable than a list f facts. This is where the arts cme in. Artists give us different perspectives with which t cnsider and reimagine the wrld tgether. They can redress the prclaimed bjectivity in science by bringing stries 一subjectivities -int the picture, and these can help fster, a sense f cnnectin and hpe.
The fact that a mving clck des nt g as last as an unmving ne is quite easy t demnstrate. First, imagine a clck made frm tw parallel mirrrs, between which a phtn (光子) bunces back and frth. Imagine yu have ne f these clcks in yur hand, and that yu can watch the phtn as it ges up and dwn, cunting the bunces as a way f measuring time. Nw imagine a friend als has ne f these clcks, but she’s mving hrizntally.
Frm yur pint f view, her phtn traces ut tw sides f a triangle as it bunces frm ne mirrr t the ther and back again, travelling further during each rund trip than the phtn in yur clck.
Here cmes the weird bit. Accrding t Einstein, the light buncing in yur friend’s clck is travelling at the same speed as the light in yur clck, the light in yur friend’s clck must take lnger t bunce between the mirrrs. In ther wrds, yur friend’s clck is running slwer than yurs.
This cnclusin might sund like a special feature f lightclcks. But it isn’t. It is a feature f all clcks. T understand why, we need t intrduce Einstein’s secnd crucial idea---an idea first intrduced by Galile Galilei in the early 1600s.
    32. Which f the fllwing is the fundatin f Special Thery f Relativity?
    A. We can g almst as fast as light. B. We can reach the speed f 299 millin m/s.
    C. Light mves thrugh empty space. D. Light travels at a fixed speed.
    33. What des the example f the ‘twin paradx’ illustrate?
    A. Peple culd age at different rates. B. We can’t zip arund fast enugh.
    C. Twins dn’t always lk similar. D. Einstein’s idea is weird.
    34. What des the descriptin f the tw clcks in paragraph 4 demnstrate?
    A. Time is nt cnstant B. Clcks measure time
    C. Phtns bunce arund D. Parallel mirrrs dn’t exist
    35. What is mst likely t be dealt with in the fllwing paragraph?
    A. Galile Galilei’s life stry. B. The special feature f clcks.
    C. Anther idea f Einstein’s. D. Events that happened in the 1600s.

On the walk t Mareya’s huse, I said, “I hpe Ms. Williams will understand why we culdn’t d ur prtrait task.” “What d yu mean?” asked Mareya curiusly. “We’re allwed t paint in any style. Let’s just use different paintbrushes.” She bent dwn, picked up tw skinny sticks, and said, “Hw abut these?” “Why nt?” I laughed. And I tld her that I was pretty sure tempera paints were safe fr finger painting. We carefully painted each ther’s prtraits with ur clrful fingers. Besides, we bth added Ginger t ur paintings.
We ended up having a great time making ur prtraits with ur fingers. And even thugh ur masterpieces turned ut way different than they wuld have with the fam brushes, they ended up being ur favrite pieces f the whle art term. “We’re srry,” we tld Ms. Williams, “but a dg really did eat part f ur hmewrk.” Ms. Williams smiled happily. “Art is a lt like life. It almst never turns ut the way we plan. And smetimes ging in an entirely different directin is the very thing that makes it wnderful.”

    Text 10
Have yu nticed it is harder fr yu t fcus n ne thing fr a lng time? If s, yu’re nt alne. Many studies have been written abut peple’ s attentin and their cell phnes. The research in thse studies is clear. Yur ability t keep attentin has gtten less, althugh cmputer engineers at large nline and scial media cmpanies wrk hard t keep yur attentin glued t their websites. With s many interesting things available at a click, peple are getting less able t fcus n smething in a deep way, like reading a bk fr 30 minutes. This is a cncern, (18) because we have nly had this technlgy fr several years. Yet, it is nt all bad. Our brains have gtten better at reviewing large amunts f infrmatin quickly. (19) On the ther hand, sme studies frm the last cuple f years say the ppsite. This much smaller grup argues that all attentin depends n interest. S, while it is true that a persn checks mre and mre websites every minute, that’ s because websites have increased their ability t get yur curisity. (20)
