The researchers examined the effects f advertising junk fd n mre than 6,000 kids thrugh TV cmmercials and ther types f media. They fund that kids made unhealthy fd and drink chices as quickly as 30 minutes after seeing the ads.
“There is t much unhealthy fd advertising ut there, which appears repeatedly,” says Behnam Sadeghirad. He’s ne f the researchers wh led the study. “This is dangerus fr yunger children because they lack self-discipline and dn’t knw the advertised fds are healthy r nt.”
Fd and drink ads are everywhere, frm tv t the Internet Cmpanies want t make sure yu knw abut their prducts. They spend nearly $1.8 billin a year n fd ads aimed at kids, accrding t a reprt. The Nielsen Cmpany tracked the number f fd ads that kids saw in 2015. it fund that kids watched nearly 12 fd ads n TV each day. Mst f these ads weren’t fr healthy fds. In fact, n average, kids saw nly ne ad per week fr fruit and vegetables. Instead, mst f the ads were fr fast fd, candy and sugary drinks.
Jennifer Harris, a prfessr at the university f Cnnecticut, says this is a big part f the prblem. “Unhealthy fds are nt things we shuld be encuraging kids t eat mre ften,” says Harris. “But unfrtunately thse are the prducts being advertised t them the mst.”
