In the study, researchers estimated that shpping at physical stres fr frequently bught items such as tilet paper, shamp and tthpaste, ften results in less greenhuse gas emissins (排放) than rdering the prducts frm a cmpany that nly sells thrugh the Internet.
The main reasn is because f hw peple shp nline: Many buy items nline frequently — but they nly buy a few items per purchase. “When they shp in a stre, they aggregate these items in a single large purchase,” nted Sadegh Shahmhammadi, ne f six researchers wh wrked n the year-and-a-half lng study.
“Frequent nline purchases prduce mre packaging waste, and nline items tend t cme frm different distributin (配送) centers. Bth factrs result in higher greenhuse gas emissins per item,” said Shahmhammadi.
The team mdeled their research n the mvement f gds frm the factry all the way thrugh t the end cnsumer. They then specifically fcused n the part f the retail supply chain (零售供应链) called “the last mile” delivery: the distance between a stre t a custmer, r in the case f nline shpping, the distance between the distributin center fr the gds t the custmer.
The analysis shwed that ttal greenhuse gas ftprints per item purchased were higher frm physical stres than thse frm bricks& clicks (when peple rder nline and a physical stre delivers the items t them) purchases in 63% f the shpping events but lwer than thse f pure players (strictly nline sellers) in 81% f shpping events.
