At arund the same time, Bsch learned that her mther was struggling t find a gd methd fr restring 18th-century paintings. The paintings, by Spanish artist Antni Palmin, sat in Sants Juanes— ne f the ldest churches in the city f Valencia.
Bsch said her mther, Pilar Rig, nted hw difficult the restratin prcess at the church was. One reasn was the glue used t remve the paintings frm the walls in the 1960s. The substance was nearly impssible t remve cmpletely.
“My mther had a very difficult prblem t slve and I fund a paper abut bacteria used t clean fresces in Italy,” Bsch said. A fresc is a kind f painting that ften appears acrss a large wall.
Bsch added she decided t write her dctral paper n the same subject. That was mre than ten years ag. Tday, she gets t wrk with her mther n the church restratin (修复). They are using the bacteria methd t remve glue frm artwrks. The $4.46 millin prject is being financed by lcal rganizatins.
The prcess invlves feeding small amunts f the glue — made frm animal cllagen (胶原) — t the bacteria. After a time, the bacteria begins t naturally prduce enzymes t break dwn the glue.
The mther-daughter team then mixes the bacteria with a natural algae (藻类)-based substance called a gel, and places it nt the paintings. They say that after abut three hurs, the gel mixture is remved, leaving the paintings glue-free.

We all knw hw we use ur senses every day: We might hear a dg barking r taste a crunchy apple. But what if hearing that dg barking als made yu see the clr blue? Or tasting that apple made yu hear a sft musical sund? This culd happen t smene with synesthesia.
Synesthesia is a brain cnditin where the senses mix tgether. Fr a persn with synesthesia (called a “synesthete”), seeing, hearing, r tuching smething can trigger (触发) anther sense. There are many different types f synesthesia. Fr example, chrmesthesia is when sunds are linked t clrs, and grapheme— clr synesthesia is when letters and numbers are linked t clrs. There are many ther variatins t.
S, why des this happen? What makes sme peple taste bananas when they listen t classical music? It might be in their genes. Nearly half f all synesthetes say that a clse family member als has the same cnditin, suggesting that it might be a genetic trait (特质). One thery is that synesthesia happens because f a change in a gene respnsible fr remving unnecessary cnnectins in the brain. When we grw, the brain naturally gets rid f sme f these cnnectins. But if a change ccurs, sme cnnectins might stay, leading t this crss-wiring f senses.
Recent studies have lked at hw synesthesia may benefit thse with the cnditin. Research has fund that peple with synesthesia ften have exceptinal memries. They may als have better senses: thse with clr-related synesthesia can tell different clrs apart mre easily and thse with tuch-related synesthesia have a mre sensitive tuch. Additinally, synesthesia seems t happen mre ften in artists and pets, which suggests it might bst creativity.
In the future, synesthesia may be helpful in curing diseases invlved with ur brains’ netwrking systems and aiding thse with memry prblems. It has been shwn that synesthesia can be triggered by drugs, lack f sensry input, r hypnsis (催眠). Mre research culd help us imprve cnnectins in the brain and bst memry. Synesthesia is leading t new discveries abut hw ur brains wrk!

Mireille Silcff lves t read, but her 12-year-ld daughter des nt share this passin. In a New Yrk Times essay, Silcff recunts her attempts t get her daughter t read, which eventually led her t ffer a $100 bribe. She chse Jenny Han’s The Summer I Turned Pretty, a bk tied t a TV series her daughter already lved. The deal was fr her daughter t finish it within a mnth, but she cmpleted it in just a week and even requested the sequel (续篇), which she read fr “n extra charge.”
Silcff recgnizes that yung peple tday deal with stries differently but believes that bks ffer a unique experience. “Yu knw when an authr sums up a feeling yu didn’t even knw yu’ve had, and a hundred lightbulbs g ff n the tp f yur head?” she reflects, emphasizing that bks allw readers t interact with the stry in ways that screen adaptatins cannt. Althugh it remains t be seen if her daughter has becme a reader fr life, Silcff feels she has pened a new “quiet persnal place” fr her daughter in the wrld f literature, calling it the best mney she ever spent.
While I appreciate Ms. Silcff’s desire t have her daughter experience the jys f reading, I seriusly dubt that paying her daughter t read “wrked.” While the mney reward persuaded her daughter t read the bk in the shrt term, it was unlikely t develp the mtivatin (动力) t read, which must feel like a chice and unpressured.
Decades f research have shwn that paying peple t d things they lve weakens their mtivatin afterwards, and paying them t cmplete tasks they d nt enjy keeps the mtivatin tied t rewards s that they are less likely t value the activity and chse t participate in it n their wn.
The belief in rewards as an effective mtivatr is a myth; ther strategies are mre likely t develp lng-term mtivatin.
Rewards are a simple fix that is likely t backfire.
12. Hw did Silcff encurage her daughter t read?
A. With mney reward.B. With lnger TV time.
C. With free new bks.D. With wrds f praise.
13. What did Silcff imply in the underlined wrds in paragraph 2?
A. Reading can take up much f yur time and energy.
B. Bks can help prepare yu fr accidents in yur life.
C. Reading can bring sudden realizatin r understanding.
D. TVs and films can prvide a mre inspiring experience.
14. Regarding Silcff’s methd, the authr expresses cncerns ver __________.
A. its mral principleB. its increasing cst
C. its scial influenceD. its lng-term effectiveness
15. Why des the authr mentin the “decades f research”?
A. T highlight that mtivatin is clsely tied t rewards.
B. T emphasize that kids will read mre under pressure.
C. T suggest that paying kids t read is ptentially useful.
D. T stress that reading shuld be smething kids chse t d.

Yur brain likes t play the blame game.
____20____ In the prcess, we misunderstand reality t prtect ur self-esteem. Fr example: When yu gt badly sunburned, rather than acknwledging that yu didn’t reapply sunscreen as ften as yu shuld have, yu decide that the sunscreen itself must have been ineffective. Our brain d s t prtect ur self-esteem and guard us against the fear f failure.
