Finnish Lapland, in the far nrth f Eurpe, is hme t sme 180,000 peple and arund 200,000 reindeer (驯鹿). The animals live wild but each ne has an wner, identified by a mark n its ear. Anne Ollila, 50, ne f 4,000 such wners, wrks in the Finnish part f this regin with her husband and tw adult sns and their families. Ollila lives 80 kilmetres inside the Arctic Circle, an hur frm Lapland’s capital city, Rvaniemi, and seven kilmetres frm her nearest neighbur. Summer days — when the reindeer raisers earmark newbrn reindeer — are lng and in June the sun never sets. At that time Ollila sleeps during the day and walks up t 20 kilmetres a night thrugh the frest, making the mst f the cler temperatures t d her wrk but having t endure large grups f insects alng the way.
In deepest winter, there is little daylight. Many grasslands are frzen and the reindeer mve int the frest fr prtectin against wlves and glden eagles — the birds can kill an adult reindeer.
Ollila and her family ffer turists reindeer experiences thrugh their cmpany Reindeer Jurney. Visitrs can get clse t the animals in the wild r at their farm, watching them being trained t pull sledges (雪橇) r take a sleigh ride.

Califrnia researchers develped a glve equipped with electrnic sensrs that can translate American Sign Language (ASL) int English in real time thrugh an app n yur smartphne.
Unlike its past versin, the new glve is lightweight, inexpensive and lng-lasting. The device culd help remve cmmunicatin difficulties between signers and nn-signers. Hpefully, this may pen up an easy way fr peple wh use sign language t cmmunicate directly with nn-signers withut needing smene else t translate fr them.
The team wrked with fur peple wh are deaf and use ASL and had them repeat gestures up t 15 times while wearing the glve-like device, teaching a machine hw t recgnize them at the same time.
The glve has thin, stretchable sensrs made frm “electrically cnducting yarns” that run up each finger and change the mvements int signals. These signals are sent t a “dllar-cin-sized” circuit bard (电路板) placed n the persn’s wrist, which then wirelessly transfers them ver t a smartphne.
The system was able t recgnize 660 hand mtins and finger placements that stand fr each letter in the English alphabet, different phrases and each number. The algrithm (计算程序) recgnized the crrect signs abut 99% f the time, and in less than ne secnd — r abut a tne wrd per secnd.
The researchers als placed sensrs in between the participants eyebrws and n the sides f their muths t “change facial expressins that are a part f ASL”. The same exact hand-shape and mvement can ttally change meaning because f the facial expressin that is used t accmpany it. Take the wrd MUCH.
