“Why is every superher mvie an rigin stry?” cmplained Entertainment Weekly film critic Adam Markvitz after seeing a trailer (预告片) fr this summer’s Man f Steel. Perhaps we lve rigin stries, Markvitz suggested, because they “shw the exact mment when a nrmal guy ges frm being just like us t being smehw better, faster, strnger.”
I tend t disagree. I think rigin stries shw us nt hw t becme super but hw t be heres, chsing ther peple’s needs ver the pursuit f ne’s wn wealth and pwer. I’ve learned this thrugh hundreds f cnversatins at cmic bk meetings, where fans have been remarkably hnest abut their lives and the inspiratin they draw frm superher stries.
I’ve fund that superheres g thrugh three types f life-changing experiences that we can relate t. The first is trauma (创伤), which lies at the heart f Batman’s rigin stry, in which Bruce Wayne cmmits himself t fighting crime after seeing his parents killed. In real life, many peple experience “stress-caused grwth” after a trauma and determine t help thers.
The secnd life-changing frce is destiny (命运). Cnsider Buffy the Vampire Slayer, abut a nrmal teenager wh discvers she’s the “Chsen One” —brn with supernatural pwers t fight demns. Buffy is unwilling t accept her destiny, yet she thrws herself int her new jb.
Lastly, there’s pure chance, which transfrmed a yung Spider-Man, wh was using his pwer fr selfish (自私的) purpses until his belved uncle was killed by a street thug. Spider-Man’s herism is an example f hw randm negative events cause many f us t reflect n ur lives and chse a different path.
At their best, superher rigin stries inspire us and prvide mdels f cping with difficulties, finding meaning in lss and trauma, discvering ur strengths and using them fr gd purpse. (Wearing a cape r tights is nt a must. )
    24. Hw did Adam Markvitz feel abut every superher mvie being an rigin stry?
    A. Surprised.B. Disappinted.C. Fascinated.D. Inspired.
    25. What experience led Bruce Wayne t becme a her?
    A. Suffering frm great stress.B. Fighting crime with great devtin.
    C. Relating t Batman’s rigin stry.D. Witnessing his parents being killed.
    26. What did Buffy d after she fund her destiny?
    A. She culdn’t wait t accept her rle.B. She used her pwer fr selfish purpses.
    C. She refused t take n the respnsibility.D. She cmmitted herself t her rle eventually.
    27. Accrding t the authr, why d peple lve rigin stries?
    A. Because they inspire us t put thers befre urselves.
    B. Because they lie at the heart f every superher mvie.
    C. Because they explre the impact f negative events n life.
    D. Because they shw hw rdinary peple becme extrardinary.
    C
In the park, there are 9485 f them. Yu sit n them. T rest. Read a bk. Wait fr a friend. Or it’s such a day when yu have nthing t d, and this is a delicius place t accmplish abslutely nthing. Or yu can drift ff and muse n the plaque (纪念牌) attached there, representing a stry behind the bench. The Central Park bench. Yu aren’t just sitting n wd. Yu are sitting n memries.
Caitlin LaMrte was the develpment manager fr the Adpt-a-Bench prgram which began in 1986 as a way t finance the maintenance f the benches. If yu can affrd it, it’s simple enugh. Pay $10000 and yu get t put a plaque n a bench, saying almst whatever yu want, up t a suggested maximum f fur lines f 30 characters each. And then it’s there frever. Up t nw,4223 f the benches have been adpted. While plenty f benches remain unadpted, sme areas are sld ut. Fr instance, all the benches facing the lake.
Benches can serve many purpses. Quite ften, they’re adpted t remember a relative r friend. Or n ccasin, a pet. Increasingly, Ms. LaMrte said, “we have mre plaques that are happy.” Graduatins r birthdays r birth wishes r wedding gifts.
Last year, Karen May figured she wuld adpt a bench fr her children. When her elder sn, Thedre, prpsed t his girlfriend, Lucinda, he wrte a brief children’s bk fr her called “Tw Red Fxes,” because fxes were a recurring theme in her upbringing (as when a fx sped acrss the field when her father prpsed t her mther). The fxes were stand-ins fr Ms. May’s sn and his bride-t-be. And there was the fact that her yunger sn, Thrnwell, went by the nickname Pup. S there is a bench facing the lake that reads, “Tw Red Fxes and a Pup.” Peple will sit there and nt knw what it means. But Ms. May knws.
    28. What is the Adpt-a-Bench prgram intended fr?

    C. T prmte her sn’s newly published bk.D. T celebrate her children’s special mments.
    31. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
    A. Adpt-a-Bench PrgramB. Tw Red Fxes and a Pup
    C. Benches With Stries t TellD. A Creative Gift in the Park
    D
Tw small white dgs appeared as I arrived at a ranch huse a few miles ff the highway in Hempstead, fllwed by Jhn Mendla, a retired plice fficer. He intrduced me t the dgs, Princess Ariel and Princess Jasmine. They were named fr a deceased dg named Princess t whm they are similar in every detail. And they shuld be: they are Princess’s clnes.
It has nw been nearly thirty years since clning mammals (哺乳动物) became pssible. The technlgy has mainly been used t prduce cattle, sheep, and pigs. Hwever, since 2005, mre than tw thusand dgs have been successfully clned. Bilgically, it is nt very different frm that f clned cws r sheep, but in ther respects the clning f pets raises a hst f ethical (伦理的) and identity issues.
There are issues f explitatin (剥削) —bth f grieving wners wh hpe t bring back their lst pets, and f the unseen animals whse bdies are used in making a clne. There’s the issue f supply: the prductin f tailred dgs in a sciety when s many gd, naturally brn nes in shelters are in need f adptin. Finally, there’s an existential issue: wh, exactly, is prduced when a dg is clned? Dgs are seen by mst wners as a species f individuals, with distinct persnalities. We keep them fr cmpaninship. As a result, we have placed ur ideas f selfhd nt them, giving them preferences, fears, and mds. But, if it is dgs’ individuality that we value, hw can we accept the idea that their unique and unreprducible selves can, in fact, be reprduced?
As a matter f fact, amng the peple wh have clned their dgs, many struggled t say exactly what it was abut the riginal animal that they had wanted t reprduce, especially in cntrast t ther dgs they had lved but hadn’t felt like clning. Many spke f the riginal as simply “special”—but the specific nature f that specialness seemed almst impssible t be explained. Perhaps the desire was less abut re-creating the riginal dg than abut bringing back the unique relatinship that had been established with the animal.
    32. What can we learn abut the tw white dgs in the first paragraph?
    A. They were named after a princess.B. They were clnes f a late dg.
    C. They were distinct frm each ther.D. They were naturally prduced by Princess.
    33. Hw is the clning f dgs different frm that f ther mammals?
    A. It has higher success rates.B. It raises mre mral cncerns.
    C. It is technically mre challenging.D. It stirs greater public curisity.
    34. Which wrd best describes the authr’s attitude t the clning f dgs?
    A. Unclear.B. Objective.C. Favurable.D. Disapprving.
    35. Why d peple desire t clne their dgs?
    A. T deal with the identity issue. B. T reprduce the riginal animal.
    C. T recreate a distinctive emtinal bnd. D. T find ut the specialness f the riginal dg.
    第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Everybdy lies t sme degree. 36 Hwever, nbdy wants t be caught. Of curse there’s a huge gap that separates little white lies frm the whppers (弥天大谎), but learning hw t tell if smene is lying is a skill that’ll always cme in handy. Here’s what t watch fr.
    37
There are many signs smene culd be lying. Arm and leg mvements may als be fewer. It seems that liars wuld becme mre cncentrated n telling the lie, s they get quieter in their bdy.
    Ask questins——quickly.
If yu suspect yu’re being lied, try this technique, which experts say can trip up a liar. Try asking questins quickly—ne after the ther. “The first lie is easy,” explains Kang Lee, prfessr at the Ontari Institute fr Studies in Educatin’s Department f Applied Psychlgy and Human Develpment. “ 39 When yu cntinue t ask questins and put peple n the spt, it gets harder t maintain the lie.”
    Check fr emtinal “leaks”.
Micr-expressins ften shw a persn’s real thughts. If yu were t watch peple very clsely n videtape, yu wuld see them shwing their true emtin just befre they shw the fake expressin designed t cver up the lie. But these extremely brief facial mvements, sme nly lasting a quarter f a secnd, aren’t easy t spt. 40 And intentinal liars tend t add ther expressins, like smiling, t hide a lie.
S here’s hping that the next time smene thrws a lie yur way, yu’ll knw just hw t catch it.
    A. Listen t the vices.
    B. Get better at bdy language.
    C. The fllw-up lie is mre difficult.
    D. Interestingly, peple wh are lying ften becme mre still.
    E. Even prfessinals trained in lie detectin can’t always tell them apart.
    F. In sme cultures, it’s cnsidered inapprpriate t maintain eye cntact.
    G. Lies ccur between friends, teachers and students, husbands and wives.

Jet gave his mm a huge hug, and said, “I have a surprise fr yu t!” Digging int his backpack, Jet pulled ut the small album. “I knw we lst a lt f things in the fire, and the pht albums were really special t yu.” he said in a sft vice. As Jet’s mm flipped thrugh the pictures, she laughed and cried. There she saw the drawings f their favrite memries. Each picture captured a mment they had shared, a mment they thught they’d lst in the fire. That night, after they unpacked mre f the bxes, Jet carefully placed Big Dg back n the shelf abve his bed. Maybe the fire had taken sme things, but it hadn’t taken what mattered mst—their lve, their memries, and the chance t keep making new nes.
