On Saturday mrnings, I’ d take Will ut t the playgrund and play catch with him. Thanks t my weak arm, the ball drpped befre he culd catch it. After many misses ne day, he said, “Hw am I ever ging t make the majr leagues?” “Yu gt the wrng dad, kid,” I thught. Baseball isn’t my thing.
Still, I wanted t give my kids cnfidence n the field. There was an fficial Little League in ur area, but it was super-cmpetitive and primarily targeted lder bys. What if we had smething mre lw-key, smething that welcmed bys and girls, and yunger nes?
I shared the idea with sme neighbrs. “That wuld be great!” they said. Nw wh culd rganize such a thing? Nt me. I tried t put the idea aside, but it wuldn’t leave me. I finally decided that I must d smething abut it. S, I called the city’ s recreatin department, explaining that sme families wanted t start a baseball league in ur neighbrhd. Lking angry, the waiter then picked up the dish and thrwn it t his lap. What he did wrng, he wndered. Well, nthing is quite as it seems when it cmes t using hand gesture in anther cuntry.
Gestures have been used t replace wrds in many cuntries, and they are ften specific t a given culture. Gesture may mean smething cmplimentary in ne culture, but is highly ffensive in anther.
The gesture “thumb-up” is cmmnly misinterpreted. In English, it is ppularly knwn as “thumbs up”, despite the fact that the actin is cmmnly perfrmed with nly ne hand. English-speaking Caucasians use it t signal “OK”, which is the same meaning as OK ring gesture. The tw can in fact be used almst interchangeably. Avid using this gesture in Nrthern Greece unless yu want t invite a fight. Jackdaws(寒鸦) are the smallest member f the crw family. They ften live in a crwd. If yu’ve ever heard jackdaws during their evening gatherings and mrning departures, yu’ll knw they are nt quiet birds. A team f the Crnish Jackdaw Prject set ut t determine why jackdaws are s nisy befre. they depart frm their sleeping spt. The team’ s thery was that the mrning calls might be a jackdaw versin f “vting”. The researchers suspected that each individual’ s call might cunt as an “I’ min!”. When a certain amunt f “I’ min !” s are called — and s a certain vlume f nise is reached - - the grup might then depart as a unit.
T test this idea, the researchers artificially increased the level f calls during the jackdaws’ natural mrning calls. Their expectatin was that, if jackdaws really are “vting with their vice” t decide when t depart the sleeping site, artificially adding calls wuld make them leave earlier than they naturally wuld have dne. Subsequent experiments cnfirmed their expectatin. The team therefre shwed that jackdaws use their calls as a srt f vting system.

S the lud calls f jackdaws in the mrning are therefre nt the pure chas it sunds like. If yu are ever being driven mad by the sund in the mrning, yu can find cmfrt in the fact that the luder they get, the sner they will leave yu in peace.
