本课时的话题是简介麦哲伦、达·伽马和哥伦布三位著名的航海家以及讨论是否值得冒险攀登珠穆朗玛峰，包括 Starting ut和 Understanding ideas两部分。
Starting ut是导入部分，通过观察地图，了解三位著名航海家的航海路线以及探险旅程：（1）麦哲伦是葡萄牙航海探险家，他的环球航行不仅成功开辟了新航线，而且通过他的探险船队进行的探险航行证明了地球是圆的。（2）瓦斯科·达·伽马是葡萄牙航海家、探险家，也是从欧洲绕好望角到印度航海路线的开拓者。（3）意大利航海家克里斯托弗·哥伦布发现新大陆是15世纪西欧航海家开辟新航路中最重要的航海活动。通过观看视频，了解著名地理学家、旅行家和文学家徐霞客在旅行中遇到的困难。
Understanding ideas部分是一篇议论文。文章通过列举不同时期、不同人物的观点，来讨论攀登珠穆朗玛峰是否值得冒险，引导学生理解探险，不一定要取得胜利，但定要有价值，成也英雄，败也英雄，这才是探险真正的意义。
课时目标：
1.认知并灵活运用本课时的重点单词 cnfirm，crwd，attempt，failure，thrill以及短语make mney，succeed in，take ne’s life，bring…int fcus，figure ut，refer t。
2.通过速读精读等方式，引导学生由浅入深，逐渐加深对文章的理解，并掌握不同的阅读技巧和方法。
3. 通过阅读文章，了解探险家的故事，引导学生正确理解“探险、冒险”的含义，不盲目跟从。

2.设计好阅读理解题目，利用不同方式拓展语言点，激发学生的学习兴趣。
学生准备：
1.在网上搜索不同时期的探险家的故事以及他们的优秀品质，学习他们勇于探索的大无畏精神。
2.预习 Starting ut和 Understanding ideas两部分的内容，通过查字典等方式提前解决词汇问题。
教学过程：
Step I Leading in
1.The teacher guides the students t lk at the pictures n Page 49 f the textbk and asks them t speak ut the three explrers and their rutes. Then lk at the map，and match the rutes t the explrers.
2.Play the vide prepared in advance，and ask the questins：
（1）What kind f difficulties did Xu Xiake meet？
（2）D yu knw any ther great explrers？Share their stries with the class.
3.Wrk in grups.
Ask students t talk abut great explrers. Write dwn what they discussed in the frm.
Step II Reading
1.Pre-reading.
（1）Lk at the title f the passage and talk abut yur understanding f it.
（2）Lk at the map and answer the questins n Page 50.
（3）Read the passage and find ut what “Type T” persnalities are.
2.Fast reading.
Read the passage quickly and answer the questins belw.
（1）What difficulties are mentined in Paragraph 1？
（2）What is Gerge Mallry’s attitude t climbing Qmlangma？
（3）What des Alan Arnette speak abut climbing Qmlangma？

【设计意图】该部分用简答题的形式将课文主要内容展示出来，学生不仅能够理清文章脉络，而且提高了概括归纳能力和语言表达能力。因为有原文提示，难度不大所以将该题设置在了速读部分。

【设计意图】通过设置该题，进一步归纳、概括文章，理清文章脉络，有助于学生更好地加深对文章的理解。同时，在读懂语篇的基础上，将英语语法、句法和词汇的知识融合在一起，更科学地反映学生的口语表达能力和英语综合运用能力。

（1）Activity3要求选出作者的写作目的。写作目的是作者通过写该篇文章想要表达的自己的想法，因此结合文章内容，并理解标题的深层含义，在比较、辨析的基础上做出最佳选择。

（2）Activity4以思维导图的形式提炼出文章的主线，将 Gerge Mallry和 Alan Arnette的观点以概要的形式提炼出来，并列举了主要原因。该活动有助于学生提取关键信息、归纳整理原文，能够锻炼学生原文定位、确定答案角度的能力。
