As China’s cities grw, they are als sinking. An estimated 16 percent f the cuntry’s majr cities are lsing mre than 10 millimeters f height per year and nearly half are lsing mre than 3 millimeters per year, accrding t a new study published in the jurnal Science.
“Land subsidence (下沉) is a prblem that almst exists everywhere,” said Rbert Nichlls, a climate scientist and civil engineer at the University f East Anglia wh reviewed the paper, “T my knwledge, this study is the first t measure land subsidence acrss many urban areas using radar (雷达) data frm satellites. I believe the majrity f the adaptatin strategies that we have, and the plans t fight climate change, are inaccurate, just because they did nt include land subsidence. Land subsidence is an unheeded prblem. It hasn’t been studied the way, fr example, sea level rise has been studied.”
The new study was based n satellite radar measurements f hw much the grund surface in 82 majr cities, accunting fr three-quarters f the urban ppulatin, mved up r dwn between 2015 and 2022. The researchers cmpared these measurements t data n ptential cntributing factrs. Subsidence in these cities is caused in part by the pure weight f buildings, the study fund. Grundwater extractin (开采) underneath the cities als plays a rle, as d il drilling and cal mining. These activities leave empty space undergrund where sil and rcks can press tgether r cllapse (倒塌).
Being belw sea level desn’t mean a city is autmatically destryed. Much f the Netherlands is belw sea level and sinking, but the cuntry has been extensively engineered t prevent flding in places and t accmmdate it in thers. Shanghai is already limiting grundwater extractin and is sinking mre slwly than ther cities. In Japan, grundwater management ver the years has prved successful. “It’s difficult t stp subsidence entirely,” Dr. Nichlls said, “Yu’ve gt t live with what’s left.”

    C. Land subsidence is under cntrl. D. Cities grw at an alarming speed.

    30. What may cntribute t land subsidence in cities accrding t the passage?
    A. Ppulatin expansin. B. Overuse f farmland.
    C. Energy extractin. D. Unequal distributin (分配) f water.
    31. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
    A. Measures can be taken t ease subsidence.
    B. Grundwater is t blame fr land sinking.
    C. City planning calls fr jint effrts.

    D
Pnds (池塘) are a rich surce f bidiversity, prviding natural envirnments fr many rare and endangered species, including plants, insects, birds and bats. Pnds shw far greater variatin than rivers and streams. Yet, fr a century r s, pnds have been unnticed by scientists.
Why have we verlked such a significant part f the natural wrld? A key reasn appears t be the cgnitive bias (认知偏见) where we assume that if smething is small, it can’t be all that imprtant. Rather than study pnds, bilgists in the past typically headed fr the largest lake r river they culd find. Mst f us als undervalue pnds because we assume they are human-made habitats and dn’t realize that these waters have a deeply ancient rigin. Pnds have clearly existed n Earth as lng as there has been land and water and the gelgical recrd shws they have been a lng-lasting presence.
Overlking pnds within science has had a big effect n ur ability t prtect their wildlife. It has created a wrld view in which plicy-makers can simply ignre the big netwrks f pnds that make up s much f the glbal water envirnment. In Eurpe, fr example, the Water Framewrk Directive mstly excludes any bdies f water smaller than 50 hectares.
Frtunately, views are changing. Last year, the Ramsar Cnventin, an internatinal agreement, intrduced a reslutin (决议) n small wetlands, including pnds, giving mre recgnitin t them. And the Eurpean Unin-funded PONDERFUL prject is gathering data n Eurpe’s pnds.
Hwever, if we want t make use f the bidiversity pwer that pnds ffer, there remains much t d. In a wrld where fresh water faces big challenges, creating and prtecting pnds prvides a ray f hpe: a piece f natural eclgical engineering we can achieve t help supprt bidiversity.
    32. What can be learned abut pnds frm paragraph 1?
    A. They are difficult t research. B. They are t small t supprt wildlife.
    C. They fail t get apprpriate attentin. D. They have greater imprtance than rivers.
    33. What des the cgnitive bias assume?
    A. Small things are unimprtant. B. Rivers are fully-develped.
    C. Pnds are shrt-lived. D. Natural habitats are unnticed.
    34. Why is the Water Framewrk Directive mentined in paragraph 3?
    A. T slve a prblem. B. T present a fact.
    C. T make a cmparisn. D. T prve a pint.
    35. What des the authr imply in the last paragraph?
    A. Eclgical diversity is easy t realize. B. Explring pnds has a lng way t g.
    C. Fresh water supply can meet ur needs. D. Building pnds can prmte ecnmy.
