Living alne in nature is the kind f decisin that lks great n paper. Yu culd mve away frm the pressures f city life t smewhere with a lwer cst f living and mre privacy. Yu culd enjy scenic views all year rund, and adpt a simpler way f life. It’s nt hard t see the appeal f this at all. But what happens when that all ges wrng?
Paul Kingsnrth is a distinguished writer—his nvel The Wake was lnglisted fr the Bker Prize and wn the Grdn Burn Prize. His bks help develp an awareness f the place and histry, s it’s nt hugely surprising that his latest bk, Savage Gds, is abut his wn rural existence. Savage Gds is in part abut Kingsnrth, his wife, and their children mving t western Ireland. He writes, “In my cuntry a small huse and a field is beynd the means f anyne wh desn’t earn much mney r wh refuses t get int debt t chase a dream.” It’s a feeling that anyne wh’s lked lngingly at rural tiny huses thusands f miles frm anyne else can relate t.
But Kingsnrth is aware that this is nly part f the stry. “Because I am nt a real farmer, I have t make my mney in ther places,” he writes. “I need the Internet r the Dublin-t-Hlyhead ferry and smetimes bth t put fd n my family’s table.” T make matters wrse, Kingsnrth’s islatin(隔离) results in a crisis f cnfidence in his wn writing abilities—which becmes ne f the central themes f Savage Gds.
Kingsnrth isn’t the nly writer t make time spent in a vivid cuntryside sund less enjyable than ne might expect. The French writer Sylvain Tessn takes this t what may be its mst extreme pint in his bk. He lived alne fr six mnths. His bk includes impressive descriptins f the landscape and what it’s like t experience depressin in the middle f such a landscape.
Sme bks neatly remind yu f the appeal f such an existence, while thers make the drawbacks central t their accunts. In Names fr the Sea, Mss I summarizes the attractin f the wilderness. “We’d cme fr the landscape, and fr the pale nights and I dark shres with rain sweeping ver trees and bushes,” she writes. Frm that, it’s nt hard t see I why a life in nature—even with its ptential I dwnsides—still appeals t s many.
