On a spring day, Guinness Wrld Recrds held a ceremny in Burnemuth t award lcal lifeguard Chris Lewis the title. Lewis, 74, began wrking at the Drset resrt when he was 16. “It’s the best jb in the wrld,” he said. “Yu’re wrking and helping peple. What culd be better?”
His clleagues were just half his age. But he is still fighting fit. Ryal Natinal Lifebat Institutin (RNLI) lifeguards must cmplete a 400m pl swim in under 7. 5 minutes. They have t d a 25m pl swim underwater and a 25-metre surface swim cnsecutively in under 50 secnds and run 200m alng the beach in under 40 secnds. The tests are still reasnably cmfrtable fr Lewis. All winter he has been ding 3, 000 metres f sea swimming each mnth.
Lewis’s adventure began in 1965 when a plice fficer sptted that he was a keen swimmer and suggested he get his lifesaving badges. The fllwing year he began vlunteering as a lifeguard at the age f 16. Then he became part f the RNLI lifeguards in 2001 and began prviding beach patrls fr lcal authrities.
Nw the RNLI patrls mre than 240 beaches acrss the UK. Lewis laughed when asked if he had seen many changes. “The RNLI’s equipment in 2024 includes jetskis, rescue bats and quad bikes. When I started, we had a T-shirt, swimming trunks, a swimming hat, a cat if yu were lucky and a rescue tube. It was really very different.”
His mst memrable rescue tk place in 2010 when three children gt int truble while swimming. There was a cmbinatin f wind and a lively spring tide. One f them was being hurled int a rck with severe cuts. The ther tw were being “kncked arund” by the waves. Lewis swam ut just with a rescue tube but managed t get all three back.
Over the years, he has perfrmed hundreds f rescues. He says giving advice that prevents peple getting int truble is preferable t carrying ut rescues. “I wuld lve t g thrugh the whle f summer withut having t rescue anybdy.”

Thinking is an integral part f ur daily lives. We analyze, reasn, and think ver t make decisins and slve prblems. Hwever, there are instances when ur minds bypass this cnscius thinking prcess and arrive at immediate cnclusins r insights. This phenmenn is ften called “thinking withut thinking”, in ther wrds, intuitin. Despite its seemingly effrtlessly nature, intuitin may have psitive effects n us.
Intuitin may seem mysterius and magical fr mst f us, but research has shed light n the ptential peratin f intuitin. Gladwell, a writer, explres numerus studies and real-life examples that demnstrate the pwer f intuitin. One study examines the ability f art experts t determine the authenticity (真实性) f artwrks. The study discvered that these experts culd make accurate judgements within secnds f viewing a painting despite being unable t explain their reasning. They have sharpened their intuitin thrugh years f experience and expsure t varius artistic styles and techniques. Explrers like Gladwell prved that the brain can make incredibly accurate assessments based n subtle cues and patterns ur cnscius mind might verlk frm an experimental viewpint.
Back t ur lives, intuitin serves as a guideline in bth persnal and prfessinal fields. Leaders wh listen t their intuitive wisdm make innvative decisins that lead t success in business. In persnal relatinships, intuitive insights can help us understand the needs and feelings f thers, fstering deeper cnnectins and empathy.
Althugh intuitin can prvide valuable insights, it is nt rck-slid. Bias (偏见) r emtinal influences may clud ur intuitive judgements. T better use the pwer f intuitin effectively, we can cultivate essential practices. Except taking part in activities that enable yur subcnscius mind t accumulate valuable knwledge and patterns, gathering additinal dependable infrmatin t evaluate yur intuitin matters mre than frm my pint. This practice helps develp a deeper understanding f the factrs influencing yur intuitin.
28. What’s the authr’s purpse in mentining the study n art experts?
A. T reveal hw intuitin wrks. B. T identify what affects intuitin.
C. T clarify what intuitin is. D. T explain hw intuitin helps art evaluatin.
29. What is the third paragraph mainly abut?
A. The intuitive ways f making decisins. B. The guideline n using intuitin.
C. The wide applicatin f intuitin. D. The examples f intuitin wisdm.
30. Hw can we use intuitin effectively accrding t the authr?
A. By explring thinking patterns. B. By assessing relevant infrmatin.
C. By cnducting necessary practices. D. By btaining knwledge abut mind.
31. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. The Methd f Using Intuitin. B. Intuitin: A Rare Nature.
C. Intuitin: A New Way f Thinking. D. Explring the Pwer f Intuitin.

Artificial intelligence (AI) may be the biggest winner f this year’s Nbel Prize. AI pineers were recgnized with the Nbel Prize in physics, while the Nbel Prize in chemistry als had AI-related cntributins.
US scientist Jhn Hpfield and British-Canadian Geffrey Hintn wn the 2024 Nbel Prize in physics fr discveries and inventins in machine learning that paved the way fr the AI bm, accrding t Reuters.
In 1982, Hpfield created a netwrk that helps cmputers stre and recall patterns, similar t hw ur brains remember things. A year later, Hintn develped the Bltzmann machine, which allws cmputers t learn independently t recgnize patterns in data, such as identifying specific bjects in images.
As fr the Nbel Prize in chemistry, US scientists David Baker and Jhn Jumper, alng with British cmputer scientist Demis Hassabis, wn the prize. Half the prize was awarded t Baker “fr cmputatinal prtein design” while the ther half was shared by Jumper and Hassabis fr their develpment f the AI mdel AlphaFld2.
Scientists struggled fr decades t predict hw prteins fld int their 3D shapes that determine their functin. Hwever, AlphaFld2, develped by AI research labratry DeepMind, can accurately predict the 3D structures f nearly all knwn prteins, shwing great ptential in the field f drug develpment.
“AI can be a pwerful tl fr slving prblems that invlve deriving (获得) utputs frm inputs, shwing its great ptential in scientific research, “ Prfessr Yang Majun frm Tsinghua University tld Science and Technlgy Daily.
In his view, AI applicatins are nt limited t fields like bilgy, chemistry r physics. Their scpe mainly depends n hw well prblems frm the real wrld can be abstracted int a frm that AI can learn and prcess, and whether there is sufficient real-wrld data t train and build deep learning netwrks.
AI’s imprtance in scientific research is increasingly evident (明显的). Yang believes that scientists shuld actively embrace this trend while remaining aware f Al’s limitatins. Hintn expressed a similar cncern at the Nbel press cnference. “We als have t wrry abut a number f pssible bad cnsequences, particularly the threat f these things getting ut f cntrl,” he said.
“Humans carry the respnsibility fr using this new technlgy in a safe and ethical way, fr the greatest benefit f humankind,” said Ellen Mns, chair f the Nbel Cmmittee fr Physics.
32. What was Jhn Hpfield recgnized fr in the 2024 Nbel Prize in Physics?
A. Inventing the Bltzmann machine.
B. Creating AI mdels fr image analysis.
C. Develping a netwrk fr pattern strage.
D. Designing a new type f cmputer prcessr.
33. What is the significance f AlphaFld2?
A. It can synthesize (合成) new prteins fr drug use.
B. It can frecast prtein flding patterns.
C. It can analyze the genetic sequences (顺序) f prteins.
D. It can identify prteins related t diseases.
34. Accrding t Yang Majun, what is ne factr that limits the scpe f AI applicatins?
A. The availability f real-wrld data.
B. The accuracy f AI training data.
C. The level f human invlvement in AI learning.
D. The effectiveness f deep learning algrithms (算法).
35. What cncern did Hintn raise abut AI during the Nbel press cnference?
A. The risk f AI becming unmanageable.
B. The ptential fr AI t replace human creativity.
C. The slw adptin f AI in scientific research.
D. The lack f ethical guidelines fr AI develpment.

整篇文章是关于个人成长的故事。文章的主旨是race against myself and push myself utside f my cmfrt zne。 There was nly 50 metres t g. “, 第一段的结尾句以”我”游了150米结束比较好。 综合文章的主旨,第一段、第二段的段首句和前文的这句话”Hw culd I make it within just tw weeks? “, 第二段应 该侧重写”我”是如何战胜困难游到了终点,以及比赛结束时,周围人对”我”的肯定和赞许。这让”我”有一种虽败犹 荣的成就感。第二段也可写自己战胜困难赢得比赛,和获胜后的感受和感想。最后结尾要点出文章的主旨。
