Omar Vazquez grew up in pverty n Mexic's Yucatan peninsula. He watched his single mther struggle t put fd n the table, and tday the memry inspires him t help thse in need. When an invasive seaweed called sargassum shwed up n Mexic's Caribbean beaches, Omar lked past the matter f it all and saw an pprtunity t help thers.
Sargassum is nt dangerus, but it has an unpleasant smell and can becme s thick that it keeps peple frm entering the water. Mexic has experienced recrd-setting amunts f the seaweed in recent years, and it has made its way t Flrida's beaches as well. Experts say there culd be as much as 100 tns f satgassum blcking Mexican shrelines in 2023.
With turism dllars at risk, fficials and lcals alike were eager t remve the seaweed, but nly Omar saw its true ptential. The prfessinal gardener rganized a beach cleanup that prvided jbs fr abut 300 lcal families, but he knew there was mre t d. Since peple's attitude twards the seaweed reminded him f his wn life experiences, he decided t becme an agent (推动者) fr change.
When sargassum started arriving, everyne was cmplaining. "I wanted t make smething gd ut f smething everyne saw as bad," Omar explained.
In 2018, Omar fund a way t tun sargassum int building blcks that he calls Sargablck. He creates these blcks by mixing 40% sargassum with ther materials like clay, then putting them in a blck-frming machine and baking them in the sun fr days. The end result is an rganic, sustainable, and eclgically friendly building material that experts say culd last fr 120 years.
T date, Omar's cmpany, Bluegreen Mexic, has used 700 tns f sargassum t build lw-incme husing fr thse in need. Omar said he wuld take n mre prjects, and dnate mre huses t single mthers like his wn mm.

Histry is written, read, tld—but rarely ever is it smelled.
Histrians and scientists acrss Eurpe have nw gtten tgether with perfumers (调香师) and museums fr a unique prject: t reveal what Eurpe smelled like between the l6th and early 20th centuries. A Eurpean street tday may smell like cffee, fresh-baked bread and cigarettes. But what did it smell like hundreds f years ag? As part f this three-year-lng prject called "Odeurpa", the researchers want t find all the ld scents (气味) f Eurpe—and even recreate sme f this ancient smellscape: frm the dry tbacc scents t the smelly canals.
T d this, they will first build artificial intelligence (AI) that will be trained t g thrugh histrical texts, written in seven different languages, fr any descriptins f scents. The AI will als be trained t detect images f bjects in the texts that might be scented. The team will then use this infrmatin t create an nline encyclpedia f smells frm Eurpe's past.
The encyclpedia will include the meaning f certain scents and will trace the stries behind scents, places and related practices, accrding t prject leader Angela Lee. "This database will becme a library fr the smell heritage f Eurpe, enabling future generatins t access and learn abut the scented past." The encyclpedia will als include descriptins f peple fr whm smell was imprtant.
The researchers will then wrk with chemists and perfume makers t recreate past smells and figure ut hw t display the smells in museums and ther histrical sites. With current technlgy, almst every scent can be prduced. "The mre difficult part f the prject will be t find descriptins f scents, because peple haven't always talked r written abut them," Lee said.
The scent plays a central rle in ur everyday life, even acting as a pwerful time machine int ur wn past with its ability t activate lng-frgtten memries. But it's als a key tl in telling the stries f thers. "The scent gives us access t the past in a much mre direct and emtinal way than language and images," Lee said.
28.Why did the researchers start the "Odeurpa" prject?
A.T rebuild a histrical Eurpean street.B.T make perfumes f traditinal scents.
C.T find and recreate the ld smells f Eurpe.D.T reprduce the scented past f Eurpe.
29.What will the AI d in the prject?
A.Cllect smell-related data.B.Write interesting stries behind smells.
C.Detect bjects by smell.D.Describe smells in different languages.
30.Which f the fllwing is the biggest challenge the prject faces?
A.Scents f the past are hard t keep.B.Recrds f scents are rarely fund.
C.Technlgy t reprduce scents is pr.D.Display f smells in museums csts a lt.
31.What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
A.The applicatin f past scents.B.The effect f scents n memry.

Quantum (量子) cmputers have been n my mind a lt lately. A friend has been sending me articles n hw quantum cmputers might help slve sme f the biggest challenges we face as humans. I've als had exchanges with tw quantum-cmputing experts. One is cmputer scientist Chris Jhnsn wh I see as smene wh helps keep the field hnest. The ther is physicist Philip Taylr.
Fr decades, quantum cmputing has been little mre than a labratry curisity. Nw, big tech cmpanies have invested in quantum cmputing, as have many smaller nes. Accrding t Business Weekly, quantum machines culd help us "cure cancer, and even take steps t furn climate change in the ppsite directin," This is the srt f hype (炒作) that annys Jhnsn. He wrries that researchers are making prmises they can't keep. "What's new," Jhnsn wrte, "is that millins f dllars are nw ptentially available t quantum cmputing researchers."
As quantum cmputing attracts mre attentin and funding, researchers may mislead investrs, jurnalists, the public and, wrst f all, themselves abut their wrk's ptential. If researchers can't keep their prmises, excitement might give way t dubt, disappintment and anger, Jhnsn warns. Lts f ther technlgies have gne thrugh stages f excitement. But smething abut quantum cmputing makes it especially prne t hype, Jhnsn suggests, perhaps because "quantum" stands fr smething cl yu shuldn't be able t understand." And that brings me back t Taylr, wh suggested that I read his bk Q fr Quantum.
After I read the bk, Taylr patiently answered my questins abut it. He als answered my questins abut PyQuantum, the firm he c-fumded in 2016. Taylr shares Jhnsn's cncerns abut hype, but he says thse cncerns d nt apply t PyQuatum.
The cmpany, he says, is clser than any ther firm "by a very large margin (幅度)" t building a "useful" quantum cmputer, ne that "slves an impactful prblem that we wuld nt have been able t slve therwise." He adds, "Peple will naturally discunt my pinins, but I have spent a lt f time quantitatively cmparing what we are ding with thers."
Culd PyQuantum really be leading all the cmpetitin "by a wide margin", as Taylr claims? I dn't knw. I'm certainly nt ging t advise my fiend r anyne else t invest in quantum cmputers. But I trust Taylr, just as I trust Jhnsn.
32.Regarding Jhnsn's cncerns, the authr feels ________.
A.sympatheticB.uncncernedC.dubtfulD.excited
33.What leads t Taylr's ptimism abut quantum cmputing?
A.His dminance in physics.B.The cmpetitin in the field.
C.His cnfidence in PyQuantum.D.The investment f tech cmpanies.
34.What des the underlined wrd "prne" in Paragraph 3 mst prbably mean?
A.Open.B.Cl.C.Useful.D.Resistant.
35.Which wuld be the best title fr the passage?
A.Is Jhnsn Mre Cmpetent Than Taylr?
B.Is Quantum Cmputing Redefining Technlgy?
C.Will Quantum Cmputers Ever Cme int Being?
D.Will Quantum Cmputing Ever Live Up t Its Hype?

The Lipstick Effect
In 2020, the wrld was plunged int an ecnmic dwnturn as the COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread clsures t businesses. 36 During such times f ecnmic hardship, ne may naturally expect that cnsumer markets will see a decline in expenditure, as peple everywhere feel restricted t making nly "essential" purchases. Hwever, a curius phenmenn knwn as the "lipstick effect" can ften be bserved.
The lipstick effect refers t the phenmenn f cnsumers spending n small luxury gds even when an ecnmic depressin ccurs. 37 Hwever, many still find the cash fr purchases f small luxury items, such as lipstick. This phenmenn was termed the "lipstick effect" in 2001 by Lenard Lauder, chairman f luxury csmetic cmpany Estée Lauder. He had nt nly witnessed the phenmenn at wrk but als realized that it was especially evident in the case f lipstick and ther csmetic prducts.
38 First and perhaps mst bviusly, cnsumers may simply wish t give themselves treats nw and again t prvide distractins frm their financial insecurity. Anther thery has t d with labur markets. Specifically, during the ecnmic depressin, jb seeking tends t becme mre cmpetitive. Thus, peple seeking emplyment may perceive a need t spend mney n certain prducts t imprve their physical appearance. 39
Whatever the causes f the lipstick effect, this phenmenn is n shrt-lived trend. During the glbal depressin f 2007-2009, sales f csmetic in the United States increased by arund 5%. Based n such data, it seems that even in the current insecure ecnmic climate, the luxury csmetics industry is ne that will be sticking arund.
While lipstick as an ecnmic indicatr makes sense, it can be difficult fr the public t access sales data n lipstick and similar prducts at regular intervals, such as weekly r mnthly. 40 Hwever, it's f n practical use t a regular mm-and-pp investr, unless they als can easily track lipstick sales.
A.What des lipstick tell us abut the ecnmy?
B.They d nt have enugh t spend n big-ticket luxury items.
C.The lipstick effect is a behavir that reflects ecnmic cnditins and emtinal states.
D.S, hw exactly d cnsumers wh are shrt f cash justify making such purchases?
E.By using prducts such as lipstick, they may feel mre cnfident during jb interviews.
F.As a result, the lipstick indicatr helps the chair f Estée Lauder knw hw t plan his budget.
G.Under these circumstances, millins f peple suddenly fund themselves facing financial insecurity.

Anxius exam candidates' prblem is the nun-up r preparatin, nt the exam itself.

It therefre seems 42 surprising that thse wh wrry abut tests d systematically 43 than thse wh d nt. Unexpectedly, accrding t research in Psychlgical Science by Maria Thebald, it is nt the pressure f the exam which causes the prblem. It is the 44 pressure.
What Dr Therbald fund was that 45 n the day f the test did nt predict exam perfrmance at all. What predicted it was the level f knwledge a student 46 in the earlier learning activities and the mck (模拟) exam. Thse. wh 47 well in these als did well in the real thing, 48 hw anxius they were n the day. What actually 49 students were high levels f anxiety during the weeks befre the exam tk place. The greater a student's anxiety in the days befre the exam, the lwer his r her knwledge-gain was during that perid, leaving that student with less material t 50 during the exam itself.
This is a psitive discvery, fr it suggests the anxius might achieve better result by adjusting their 51 when revising. Dr. Thebald ntes that test-anxiety is at its wrst when students have lw 52 f success and at the same time knw that passing the exam is. 53 imprtant. T, reduce this anxiety, she prpses a. 54 fr students t cnsider as they revise. First, they can raise their belief in their wn abilities by reminding themselves f just hw much they knw. Secnd, they can 55 the significance f the test by reminding themselves that, while it is imprtant, it is nt a life r death situatin. It really isn't.
