深海探索的意义
Thugh ceans cver abut 71 percent f the earth’s

surface, there’s still a lt we dn’t knw abut them. Only abut 20 percent f the seaflr has been mapped, and the remaining 80 percent is still a secret t us. Sme scientists even think that 91 percent f sea animals have yet t be discvered.
S why d we knw s little abut the deep sea? Well, getting t thse depths is very difficult and requires high technlgy that simply didn’t cme int being fr mst f human histry. The first navigable submarine (可驾驶的潜水艇), fr example, was built in 1620, and it culdn’t g mre than five meters belw the surface. In fact, fr a lng time many scientists didn’t even think that there culd be any life at depths greater than 550 meters and didn’t see much need t explre (探索) the deep sea. Hwever, this changed in 1862 when life was discvered as far dwn as 945 meters belw sea level with the help f a digging machine. Ten years later, arund 4,700 species (物种) unknwn befre frm the cean flr were discvered.
Since then, high technlgy has been develped t help explre the deep sea, including satellites. But why is deep-sea explratin still s difficult? Well, at greater depths it is freezing (极冷的), everything is cmpletely dark, and the pressure can be ver 1,000 times greater than that n the surface.
Thugh we have the difficulties, it’s imprtant that we understand the seas. They help cntrl the earth’s temperature and prduce half f the xygen (O2) in the air.
