After all, just a few short years ago, he was living on the streets, couch-surfing at friends' houses and weeding gardens to make ends meet. Now, one of the world's leading political academics was preparing to welcome him to Queen's University, over 4,000 miles away.Emanuel never knew who his father was and his mom was mentally ill when she gave birth to him, so the hospital took him off her and he was unofficially adopted for the first few years of his life. What followed was a childhood with uncertainty as Emanuel was passed between the adoption system and family members.Through his high school and community college years, he moved from house to house, living with friends at times and living on the streets at others.Determined to change all that, despite his rocky start in life; Emanuel involved himself in school -- doing everything he could to earn extra tuition money in his spare time. But getting accepted into university was scarcely possible because a person like him couldn't get a regular student loan.Fortunately, the government backed him、having created a policy allowing disadvantaged persons to access funding for higher education. He graduated from the University of the West Indies with a 1st Class Honours degree and went on to do his Masters.Emanuel knows that his story could have been very different. “I discovered Professor Richard English online and sent him an email honestly, not thinking he would reply, and to my surprise, he did. I applied for the highly competitive Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme in order to fund my research at Queen's. When I was told I was successful, my whole world changed.”24. What does the underlined word “pinch-me” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A. Expected. B. Unbelievable. C. Awkward. D. Anxious.25. What happened to EmanueI in his childhood? A. He was once adopted by his relatives. B. He was abandoned by his mother. C. Hy' s father was mentally ill. D. The lived with his friends now and then.26. How did Emanuel afford his university education?A. By receiving a regular student loan.B. By earning the tuition all by himself.C. By borrowing the money from friends.D. By getting the support from the government.27. What can we learn from Emanuel's story? A. Well begun is half done. B. It's never too old to learn. C. You are the master of your life. D. Lost time is never found again.CLet's face it. You're likely reading this article in an effort to avoid some other tasks you're procrastinating(拖延) to learn how to stop procrastination, but the clock is ticking. So why can't you seem to get rid of that?Though the psychological eauses are still debated, there's a human tendency to over or underestimate the value of a reward based on its temporal proximity (时间接近). This is often referred to as temporal discounting. For example, if I offered you $100 today or 110 in a month, most would take the hundred and run. But what if instead I offered you 100 dollars in a year or110 in a year and one month, you might say to yourself if I can wait a year I can wait the extra month. But the time and value difference are the exact same in each example. I t turns out that human motivation is highly influenced by how near the reward is, meaning the further away the reward is, the more you discount its value. So being online is more appealing than preparing for your test. The problem is surfing the Internet provides many small, quick and continuous rewards unlike your test scores which are a future one.So how do you overcome the urge to put off so many tasks?Unfortunately there is no definite answer, but try rewarding yourself with a timely snack or other enjoyable activities. The Pomodoro Technique makes use of a timer to work for 25minutes straight and when you've done this, give yourself the reward with a 5-minute break. Then start the working clock again. Gradually increasing the amount of work time you put in will improve your time management skills. It's been shown that creating a costly deadline is also an effective way to manage your working habits. And try to enjoy the process of achieving something instead of thinking only our minutes of suffering.28. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 1 refer to? A. This article. B. Procrastination. C. An effort. D. The clock.29. An example is given in Paragraph 2 to make the theory . A. interesting B. accurate C. understandable D. influential30. Why is surging on me more attractive to students than studying? A. It helps them kill time faster. B. It offers them more information. C. It supplies instant rewards to them. D. It strengthens the bond between friends.31. What's a suggested solution to procrastination? A. Rewarding yourself with a future gift. B. Increasing the amount of work time. C. Ignoring the process of doing the task. D. Paying dearly for your procrastination.DBoston wants to be smarter. The city has taken advantage of technologies to become more responsive to its residents' needs. But technology alone is not sufficient to make today's cities loveable. Boston has discovered that it also, needs to reach the old-fashioned low-tech community and integrate that technology with city life.Kris Carter rolled out Boston's smart city program in 2014. It started with an app that residents could download to report locations where sidewalk s needed repair. The city sorted out those report s and ranked them in a database, which repair crews used to prioritize their work. The system worked beautifully, except for one problem: most of the alerts(警报) came from wealthier neighborhoods, where the concentration of smartphone-equipped residents was highest. “The complaints from the app didn't always correspond to the greatest community need for repairs,” explained Carter.Carter's group has moved away from the model common to many smart city initiatives of letting tech-savvy(精通技术的) residents drive the process. Instead, they run meetings to find out what problems people in different neighborhoods care about solving. When it came to sidewalks, Boston introduced a second method of collecting repair tips, hiring people to get outand walk the city's 1, 700 miles of sidewalks to make a note of their condition.Whether using low-tech or high-tech approaches, said Carter, to stay smart, a city needs to continually reassess its options to spot opportunities to improve residents' lives. 'Take the sidewalk repair program, walking the streets proved to be a useful. if inefficient, way to prioritize repair needs. But last year the group found that walkers' mobile phones could be tracked as they moved along the streets, and that data could be analyzed to identify sidewalk routes which are most often used by neighborhoods.“Combined with our other sidewalk information, that gave us an even better way to predict where faster repairs would do the most good,” said Carter. “We're really always looking for whatever mix of approaches to best solving the problem.”32. What is the first paragraph mainly about? A. The citizens' life. B. The city's reputation. C. The city's management. D. The benefits of technology.3. What problem did Kris Carter's team meet when carrying out their program?A. They couldn't serve all residents well.B. They faced many technical obstacles.C. They were not supported by residents.D. They were annoyed by being short- staffed.34. Which of the following might Kris Carter most agree with?A. Maximizing the benefits of technology.B. Mixing approaches to solving problems.C. Giving full play to the power of residents.D. Letting tech companies be a leading role.35. What can be a suitable title for the passage?A. A Smart City: More than Just TechB. At 6 am, we started on foot from the gate of our school and it took an hour before we reached our destination. During the walk, we not only breathed fresh air but appreciated fantastic surrounding views. In the valley, so attractive were the red leaves that all our stress was relieved. We took some beautiful pictures and enjoyed a wonderful picnic. This activity rewarded us with an unforgettable memory.第二节:With his eyes fixed on Peter’s pocket, he wondered what Peter would do. Hesitantly taking out the treasured sea shells in his pockets, Peter asked in a low voice, “Sir, can these help cover the cost?” Watching the 5-year-old carefully lay down all his shining shells on the counter, the man was somewhat touched, but he just pretended to be counting the shells seriously, “Let me see, one, two…ok. The shells are just enough. You can take the doll and save the money”. Hearing this, Peter felt truly amazed and thanked the shopkeeper, who actually wanted to thank the two little kids, especially when he saw a big smile quickly spread over the little girl’s innocent face. They said goodbye and went out happily with the doll. Seeing Peter leaving happily with his sister holding the doll tightly, an assistant in that shop got surprised. Since his boss had been in such a low mood recently that he seldom wore any smile and talked much. When the shopkeeper turned around and noticed the assistant’s surprised look, he said smilingly, “lovely kids, aren’t they? When I see the little boy is willing to take all he has to buy a doll for his lovely sister, it really warms my heart.” The assistant replied thoughtfully, “When he grows up, he will remember he purchased a doll for his sister with the shells from a shopkeeper, which will surely warm his heart, too.”听力录音原文:W: I prefer tea to coffee, but whenever we visit Harry, he always gives us coffee?M: All I really want is a glass of cold water.2. Ms. Beach did more than sell books. 17 Her bookstore was also library. and she even prepared beds for writers visiting there. Ms. Beach was not only kind to people but also good at choosing books, so her bookstore was often visited by writers like Ernest Hemingway and James Joyce 19 But in 1941, after the Germans took power in Paris. Ms. Beach was told to close her bookstore. In 1951, another American, George Whitman opened in Paris another English-language bookstore, Librairie Mistral. Since then, just as Ms. Beachdid, 18 Mr. Whitman has also made his bookstore a library for people to borrow books, and a free hotel for writers to stay in.20 To remember Ms. Beach, Mr. Whitman changed the name of his bookstore to Shakespeare and Company in 1964, two years after Ms. Beach dies. Next time when you are in Paris, don’t forget to visit this friendly bookstore, and see if you can spend a night there.
