Frm Mzart t Metallica, tns f peple enjy listening t varius types f music while they paint r write. Many believe that music helps bst creativity, but an internatinal study cnducted by British and Swedish researchers is challenging that belief. Their findings indicate that music actually stymies creativity.
T cme t their cnclusins, researchers had participants cmplete verbal insight prblems designed t inspire creativity while sitting in a quiet rm, and then again while music played in the backgrund. They fund that backgrund music “significantly damaged” the participants’ ability t cmplete tasks assciated with verbal creativity. The research team als tested backgrund nises such as thse cmmnly heard in a library, but fund that such nises had n impact n subjects’ creativity. The tasks were simple wrd games. Fr example, participants were given three wrds, such as dress, dial, and flwer. Then, they were asked t find a single wrd assciated with all three that culd be cmbined t frm a cmmn phrase r wrd. The single wrd, in this case, wuld be “sun” (sundress, sunflwer, etc). Participants cmpleted the tasks in either a quiet rm, r a rm with three different types f music: music with unfamiliar lyrics, instrumental music, r music with familiar lyrics.
“We fund strng evidence f damaged perfrmance when playing backgrund music in cmparisn t quiet backgrund cnditins,” says c-authr Dr. Neil McLatchie f Lancaster University.
Dr. McLatchie and his clleagues therize that music interferes with the verbal wrking memry prcesses f the brain, blcking creativity. Als, as far as the library backgrund nises having seemingly n effect, the study’s authrs believe that was the case because library nises create a “steady state” envirnment that desn’t disrupt cncentratin. It’s wrth mentining that even familiar music with well knwn lyrics damaged participants’ creativity, regardless f whether r nt it caused a psitive reactin, r whether participants typically studied r created while listening t music.
“T cnclude, the findings here challenge the ppular view that music strengthens creativity, and instead demnstrate that music, regardless f the presence f the semantic (语义的) cntent ( n lyrics, familiar lyrics r unfamiliar lyrics ) , cnsistently disrupts creative perfrmance in insight prblem slving, ” the study reads.
    8. Why are Mzart and Metallica mentined at the beginning?
    A. T prve they are very creative.
    B. T intrduce the tpic f the text.
    C. T shw the imprtance f music.
    D. T ffer sme backgrund infrmatin.
    9. What des the underlined wrd “stymies” in the first paragraph prbably mean?
    A. Blcks.
    B. Bsts.
    C. Inspires.
    D. Strengthens.
    10. If the participants were given the wrds fire, place and bk during the game, a prper answer culd be______.
    A. man
    B. stre
    C. wrk
    D. birth
    11. What d we knw abut the study?

The AlphaG prgram’s victry is an example f hw smart cmputers have becme. But can artificial intelligence (AI) machines act ethically—can they be hnest and fair?
One example f AI is driverless cars. They are already n Califrnia rads, s it is nt t sn t ask whether we can prgram a machine t act ethically. As driverless cars imprve, they will save lives. They will make fewer mistakes than human drivers d. Smetimes, hwever, they will face a chice between lives. What if the nly risk is damage t the car itself nt t the passengers?
Perhaps there will be lessns t learn frm driverless cars, but they are nt super-intelligent beings. Teaching ethics t a machine even mre intelligent than we are will be the bigger challenge.
Abut the same time as AlphaG’s victry, Micrsft’s “chatbt” tk a bad turn. The sftware, named Taylr, was designed t answer messages frm peple aged 18—24. Taylr was suppsed t be able t learn frm the messages she received. She was designed t slwly imprve her ability t handle cnversatins, but sme peple were teaching Taylr racist ideas. When she started saying nice things abut Hitler, Micrsft turned her ff and deleted her ugliest messages.
AlphaG’s victry and Taylr’s defeat happened at abut the same time. This shuld be a warning t us. It is ne thing t use AI within a game with clear rules and clear gals. It is smething very different t use AI in the real wrld. The unpredictability f the real wrld may bring a trubling sftware prblem t the surface.
Eric Schmidt is ne f the bsses f Ggle, which wns AlphaG. He thinks AI will be psitive fr humans. He says peple will be the winner, whatever the utcme. Advances in AI will make human beings smarter, mre able and “just better human beings”.
    12. What des the authr want t shw with the example f AlphaG’s victry?
    A. Cmputers will surpass human beings.
    B. Cmputers have unmatched ptential.
    C. Cmputers are man’s ptential ppnents.
    D. Cmputers can becme highly intelligent.
    13. What is said t be the bigger challenge in the AI age?
    A. Hw t make super-intelligent AI machines share human feelings.
    B. Hw t ensure that super-intelligent AI machines act ethically.
    C. Hw t prevent AI machines ding harm t humans.
    D. Hw t avid being ver-dependent n AI machines.
    14. What d we learn abut Micrsft’s “chatbt” Taylr?
    A. She culd nt distinguish gd frm bad.
    B. She culd turn herself ff when necessary.
    C. She was nt made t handle strange situatins.
    D. She was gd at perfrming rutine tasks.
    15. What des Eric Schmidt think f artificial intelligence?
    A. It will be superir t human beings.
    B. It will keep imprving as time ges by.
    C. It will prve t be valuable t human beings.
    D. It will be here t stay whatever the utcme.
