Befre my first hike t the Rcky Muntains, I was a hmebdy. I had friends t hang ut with, several hbbies, and I felt cmfrtable spending weeks r even mnths in my hmetwn withut ging anywhere. I thught there was n difference between seeing smething n TV and seeing smething with ne’s wn eyes.
The situatin changed ne day when David, my best friend, came t my rm. He always gt a cuple f clrful bugs in his head. He succeeded in talking me int jining him n his trip t the Rcky Muntains.
This was my first time in the muntains, s I was turning my head in all directins. Unluckily, the weather was fggy mst f the time, and the higher we climbed the muntains, the less we culd see. But I still enjyed the hike. I walked fast, and because f that I ran ut f energy lng befre we gt t the tp. David knew hw t save energy.
When we finally gt t the tp, nthing had really changed. The same fg was cvering everything. I felt disappinted, as I expected t see the view frm abve and take sme phts. We spent a cuple f hurs n the tp, and decided t turn back. Then the wind suddenly cleared the cluds and the sun came ut. It wasn’t until then that I knew hw beautiful the muntains lked. And fr sme mments I culdn’t believe my eyes.
At that mment, I realized that I wuldn’t be able t live a life withut visiting the muntains at least twice a year.

T find ut what factrs might play a rle, researchers tested a new hypthesis (假设): What if peple’s physical surrundings affect their feelings abut certain clrs? Fr example, if smene lived in cld and rainy Finland, wuld he feel differently abut the clr yellw frm smene wh lived near the Sahara Desert?
The researchers lked at clr-emtin data frm an nging internatinal survey f 6, 625 peple in 55 cuntries. The survey asked participants t rate 12 clrs n hw clsely they were assciated with feelings including jy, pride, fear, and shame.
The researchers paid particular attentin t the data fr yellw, and analyzed hw different factrs—including hurs f sunshine, hurs f daylight, and the amunt f rainfall—were assciated with the emtins peple reprted fr the clr. The tw best predictrs f hw peple felt abut yellw were the annual amunt f rainfall, and hw far they lived frm the equatr (赤道).
Overall, peple were mre likely t assciate yellw with jy when they lived in rainier cuntries that lay farther frm the equatr, researchers reprted in the Jurnal f Envirnmental Psychlgy. In Egypt, the likelihd (可能性) f yellw being assciated with jy was just 5.7%, whereas in chilly Finland it was 87.7%. In the United States, with its mild climate and amber waves f grain, peple’s yellw-jy assciatin levels were between 60% and 70%.
The researchers als checked whether assciatins changed with the seasn—whether, fr example, peple in a certain cuntry liked yellw mre in the winter than they did in the summer. They fund that pinins abut the clr remained fairly cnstant all year rund—even when the weather changed, the data n yellw-jy assciatins were as gd as gld.
