The Envirnmental Prtectin Agency(EPA)has annunced the first-ever limits n PFAS, als knwn as frever chemicals, in drinking water. The agency says that the new rule will prtect 100 millin Americans frm six PFAS knwn t cause a hst f health prblems. “I supprt the decisin,” says Susan M. Pinney, directr f the Center fr Envirnmental Genetics at the University f Cincinnati. “It’s in line with what we knw abut the health effects f PFAS.”
But while public health experts apprve f the new rule, they think that getting frever chemicals ut f ur drinking water will be a demanding task given the great quantity f PFAS fund in it alng with the difficulty in remving them. And it may cme at a cst t cnsumers.
The dwnside f the new rule is the cst f emplying the technlgy t fix the prblem. The EPA guesses that between 6 and 10 percent f the natin’s 66,000 public drinking water systems may have t make changes t their infrastructure (基础设施) in rder t fllw the new rule. Eleven states already limit PFAS levels but many will still have t make peratinal changes if their levels are abve the natinal limit. The first task, Pinney says, shuld be determining the surce f pllutin t prevent it frm entering the water system—which is cheaper and easier than remving pllutin that’s already there.
The EPA estimates the annual cst at abut $1.5 billin but Chris Mdy, frm the American Water Wrks Assciatin(AWWA), thinks it’s been vastly underestimated. In a reprt last year, AWWA estimated the implementatin (执行) budget at clse t $3. 8 billin. What will that mean fr the water bill? Mdy says the cst burden depends n the size f yur lcal water treatment facility. “Small systems just dn’t have the ecnmy f scale (规模经济) s the cst is much higher per husehld,” he says.
While the EPA has nly put strict limits n six PFAS based n a lt f scientific evidence, thusands mre are still in the envirnment. The hpe is that nce new infrastructure is in place it will als remve many f thse chemicals that haven’t yet been banned.

The Frsa Ring is an irn ring frm Hälsingland, dating back t the 10th century. The inscriptin (铭文) n the ring describes fines fr a specific crime, where payment was t be made in the frm f xen and silver. The ring is believed t have been used as a dr handle and is currently the ldest knwn preserved legal text in Scandinavia. The new interpretatin shws that the Vikings had a system where bth xen and silver served as units f payment. This system allwed fr multiple types f units f accunts t be used at the same time, reducing transactin (交易) difficulty and making it easier fr individuals t meet their financial respnsibilities. By cmbining ecnmic thery with archaelgical (考古学的) and histrical findings, new pprtunities fr crss-field research and a deeper understanding f early ecnmic systems are pened up.
12.What can we learn frm the first tw paragraphs?

C.The Frsa Ring inscriptin suggested punishments in xen and silver.
D.The Frsa Ring was mainly used as a means f trading xen and silver.

I recalled the skills my grandmther had taught me, including the methds f digging, planting vegetable seedlings and watering them. Happily, I made it and my grandmther praised me. Each seedling I planted was a prmise f grwth, and a symbl f hpe fr the future. The sun bre dwn n us, and sweat drpped frm my frehead, but the satisfactin f ur labr was a reward beynd measure.
When I left that evening, I lked back at the garden. I was s prud t see the seedlings I had grwn myself. I knew the day I spent with my grandmther wuld remain in my heart frever. I helped my grandmther, and in the prcess, I received a gift far greater than I culd have imagined. I had learned the art f gardening. Mre imprtantly, I had deepened my bnd with my grandmther, a cnnectin that wuld flurish like the seeds we had planted tgether. I lk frward t gardening with my grandmther again in the future.
