S she shared with her parents her desire t start a garden n their wn farm t supply lcal families in need with fresh prduce.
Cming frm a farming family, Lauren had sme familiarity with agriculture, and had helped raise rabbits and lambs, but had never tried vegetable cultivatin at scale, thugh the Schreders plant sybeans and crn each year n their 150-acre farm.
The wrk invlved in realizing Lauren’s plan was n walk in the park. Initially, while prud f her daughter’s visin, her mther, Katie Schreder, admitted t sme frebding abut the wrk invlved: “I was wndering, ‘Oh my gsh, hw much wrk is this ging t be?’ I wasn’t sure whether this wuld wrk.” This was ne yung change-maker, hwever! Lauren researched plants nline, checking which species needed mre shade, hw much water was required, and when t harvest each crp. During Iwa’s ht summers, she had t water her crps by hand fr arund 2 — 3 hurs daily. She als checked daily fr weeds, and bent dwn t pick her green bean crp. Thanks t her diligence, Lauren planted half an acre f land, with 15 varieties f vegetables in 2022, harvesting her first crps.
In an interview with a lcal media channel, Lauren said, “I wanted t have smething that’d impact peple. I want t impact cmmunity members. Many peple help yu ut, but it makes mre difference when yu help thers ut. That’s what makes me mst happy.”

Farming is destrying the planet, but there culd be a much mre envirnmentally friendly way t feed urselves: using renewable energy t turn carbn dixide int fd. “This is becming a reality,” says Pasi Vainikka at Slar Fds, a cmpany that is building the first cmmercial-scale factry that will be able t make fd directly frm CO2.
There can be n dubt that immediate attentin t find greener ways t grw fd is required. Cnventinal agriculture, including rganic farming, causes damage t the envirnment in many ways. It requires a lt f land, leading t habitat lss and defrestatin. It is als the surce f a third f all greenhuse gas emissins and releases ther pllutants. It isn’t very efficient, either. Crps typically transfrm less than 1 percent f light energy int usable bimass (生物量).
Instead, Slar Fds plans t avid phtsynthesis (光合作用) altgether, and grw bacteria that use hydrgen as their surce f energy. At the factry, renewable electricity will be used t split water t prduce hydrgen and xygen. The hydrgen will be added t large cntainers, where the bacteria grw, alng with CO2 and ammnia (氨气). The end result will be a yellw pwder called Slein.
Slein is made f bacterial cells and is up t 70 percent prtein. It can be used as an ingredient in all kinds f fds. “We are aiming at replacing animal-surced prteins, which we think have the highest envirnmental impact,” says Vainikka.
Cmpared with plant crps, Slein will use 100 times less water per kilgram f prtein prduced, 20 times less land and emit a fifth as much CO2, accrding t Slar Fds. There are ther benefits, t: factries culd be situated anywhere in the wrld and prductin wn’t be affected by weather cnditins.
“With Slar Fds and ther cmpanies scaling up their systems, this is truly beginning a new era f agriculture,” says Drian Leger at Cnnectmix Bi in Germany. “I think these trends are exciting and will help bend the carbn curve as well as lead t imprved glbal fd supply security.”
    8. What is the authr’s purpse in mentining cnventinal agriculture in paragraph 2?
    A. T investigate its influence n crps.
    B. T cmpare different farming methds.
    C. T highlight the urgent need fr alternatives.
    D. T prvide an example f agricultural types.
    9. What is mainly presented in paragraph 3 abut Slein?
    A. Its prductin prcess.B. Its strage cnditin.
    C. Things used t make it.D. The ptential impact f it.
    10. All f the fllwing are the features f Slein except .
    A. It is prtein-richB. Its prductin is weather sensitive
    C. It is resurce-efficientD. Its prductin is lcatin-independent

    A. The use f Slein may help reduce carbn emissins.
    B. Slein will cntrl the agricultural develpment.
    C. Slein can help achieve glbal fd safety,
    D. The prspect (前景) f Slein remains t be seen.

Can the path f a child’s life — things like their future grade pint average (GPA) — be predicted using cmputer mdels? In thery, this idea isn’t utlandish. In tday’s digital wrld, algrithms (算法) can predict patient health utcmes and lan repayment likelihd. S researchers wndered whether this srt f analysis culd help predict a child’s future.
In a new study, Lundberg and his clleagues dug int why the earlier study failed t frecast the kids’ utcmes accurately — zering in n GPA. They recnnected with 40 families and interviewed them extensively t learn mre abut their lives. The findings suggest that the shrtcmings in predicting utcmes wasn’t just abut a lack f data r cmputatinal limits. Rather, that there is a fundamental limit n ur ability t fretell the cmplexities f life.
This failure f predictin can be attributed t tw main surces. First is smething called irreducible errr. An example f this is an unexpected event that culd happen t a child in their adlescent years that can’t be freseen — smething like a parent’s death, says Lundberg. “In that case, there’s really n machine learning r cmputatinal methds that can make predictin better,” he adds.
The secnd is learning errr: errrs within an algrithm’s learning prcess. The kinds f utcmes the scientists were trying t measure like grades and family hardships are influenced by a lt f different variables (变量), which can frm patterns that an algrithm can learn and then use t predict an utcme. But when there are t many variables, smetimes algrithms can learn the wrng pattern, says Lundberg. This type f learning errr can be made smaller with mre individuals. But fr lng-term studies like this, it’s difficult t get mre than a few thusand peple t participate.
The new findings als illustrate the value f qualitative (定性的) research — cnducting interviews and talking with human beings culd als be influencing utcmes. “Scial utcmes can be unpredictable and cmplex,” says Studeh, “but sme qualitative bservatins made by scilgists, such as hw peple interact and frm relatinships, are hard t translate int a number, says Studeh, and culd als be influencing utcmes. “The answer is nt always mre data,” eches Studeh. “Scial utcmes, they’re unpredictable and they’re cmplex. And we just have t make peace with this unpredictability.”
    12. What des the underlined wrd “utlandish” mean?
    A. Familiar.B. Specific.C. Nrmal.D. Strange.
    13. What was the mst imprtant factr that led t the inaccuracy f the earlier study?
    A. It was hard t predict as life culd be very cmplex.
    B. There was insufficient participatin frm the families.
    C. The cmputatinal mdels were nt pwerful enugh.
    D. The study lacked enugh histrical data n GPA trends.
    14. What can we learn abut learning errr in paragraph 4?
    A. It is caused by the existence f numerus variables.
    B. It ccurs when scientists measure the utcmes.
    C. It is helpful fr an algrithm t learn the pattern.
    D. It cannt be avided by increasing sample size.
    15. What was Studeh’s attitude t qualitative research?
    A. Objective.B. Favrable.C. Disapprving.D. Casual.
