Ramtiniwati Ramlee is ne f Sarawak's tp sngket weavers(织布工). Her cmpany, Seri Gedng Sngket, perates frm a pair f wden buildings in her hmetwn f Gedng,90 minutes sutheast f Kuching. She emplys 10 wmen, all f them playing a key rle in preserving this traditinal craft.
Sngket is a fabric wven frm cttn that incrprates patterns using gld r silver threads. The name cmes frm the Malay wrd meaning “t hk”, referring t the technique where a weaver hks a sectin f the base threads and weaves the gld r silver thread thrugh the gap. It's a luxurius material, typically wrn by men, which features in imprtant festivals and events.
Ramtiniwati's wrkshp is a busy place. There are 10 stages invlved in making sngket— frm dyeing(染) the threads t picking ut the chsen patterns. I watch a wman sitting n the flr beside a wden frame cntaining rws f spinning threads. Ramtiniwati learnt hw t make sngket in Kuching befre returning hme t set up her business. “When rders became verwhelming, I gt help frm the cmmunity, where the team develped the wrkshp int what yu see tday,” she tells me prudly. Nne f the first grup f the wrkers had any weaving skills befre, s Ramtiniwati had t train each f them frm zer. The team includes several members f her wn family. “One f my sisters is weaving, and my sister-in-law is cnnecting the threads,” Ramtiniwati explains.
I take a lk at sme f the finished prducts, hanging n display arund the edge f the wrkshp. There's a black piece f clthing with silver thread and a white piece f clthing with gld. Anther cntains traditinal patterns, based n plants. Ramtiniwati says it can take up t five mnths t create the mst intricate piece. And she further explains and shws me hw the cmplicated clthing is wrn, wrapped arund the waist and ver the shulder in a series f flds.
In fact, sngket is becming a dying art because mst f the remaining weavers are very ld. “I am cmmitted t keeping sngket alive and ffering a livelihd t the lcal cmmunity,” Ramtiniwati says.
    24. What aspect des the name “sngket” cme frm?
    A. Its practical use. B. Its multiple clrs.

Dgs may pssess a deeper understanding than what they utwardly exhibit. Pet dgs' brains displayed neural (神经的) signs f surprise when their wners shwed them an unexpected ty. The findings suggest that dgs create mental cncepts f bjects.
“Anyne wh has ever interacted very much with a dg prbably is nt s surprised t knw that dgs understand that their speech is referring t at least a few cmmn bjects,” says scientist Ellen Lau. But the majrity may have assumed that this srt f “understanding” is just a simple, almst autmatic respnse t the prnunciatin f the term.
Sme unusually gifted dgs have extrardinary vcabulary. A famus dg named Chaser knew mre than 1,000 wrds fr tys, fr instance. In an experiment, the dg heard a recrding f its wner’ s vice saying the wrd fr a ty. Then, it saw the wner appear in a windw hlding up a ty. Electrdes(电极) n its head picked up strnger brain signals when an unexpected ty was presented instead f the ne named by the wner.
The researchers think the signal indicates surprise and suggests that the dg had already frmed a mental cncept and expectatin f the ty after hearing that wrd. In fact, the signal was especially strng fr a mismatch invlving wrds that the dgs reprtedly knew very well.. “That suggests that it is really abut understanding and knwledge f the wrd,” Marianna Brs, the c-authr f the study, says.
Humans have this surprise signal, t. It's called the N400 effect, and it ccurs in the brain just after smething unexpected happens. “There have been nw thusands f human studies investigating and using this N400 effect,” Lau says. But there has been n evidence f a similar signal in dgs, until nw.
This neural signal f surprise in the dgs’ brains wasn’t shcking. Scientists have previusly fund clues abut hw dgs prcess meaningful wrds, but the findings give a glimpse int the mental lives f dgs that didn't exist befre. They understand mre signs than they shw.
    28. What d mst peple think f dgs' understanding f human speech?
    A. It is passive. B. It is cmplicated, C. It is flexible. D. It is reflexive.
    29. What did the experiment n Chaser reveal?
    A. Dgs can recgnize their wners,
    B. Dgs have n preference fr tys,
    C. Dgs' brains react strngly t surprises,
    D. Dgs' memries are limited by vcabularies.
    30. What can be learned abut dgs' mental abilities?
    A. They have been fully understd.
    B. They are identical t thse f humans.
    C. They exclude the frmatin f bject cncepts.
    D. They are similar t humans in frming expectatins.
    31. What is the best title fr the text?
    A. Dgs Can Understand Humans’ Requests
    B. Dgs Knw Mre Wrds than They Let n
    C. Dgs Have Prnunciatin Signals in Their Brains
    D. Dgs Are Extremely Talented in Learning Wrds

The number f knwn muntains in the Earth's ceans has apprximately dubled. Accrding t a researchers’ reprt, glbal satellite bservatins have revealed nearly 20,000 previusly unknwn seamunts.
Just as muntains twer ver the Earth's surface, seamunts als rise abve the cean flr. The tallest muntain n the Earth, as measured frm base t peak, is Mauna Kea, which is part f the Hawaiian-Emperr Seamunt Chain. These underwater structures are ften ht spts f ceanic bidiversity. That's in a small part because their steep walls frmed frm the vlcanic activity prvide plenty f habitats. Mst imprtantly, seamunts als prmte upwelling f nutrient-rich water, which distributes beneficial chemical substances thrughut the water clumn. “They’ re like stirring rds(长棒) in the cean,” says David Sandwell, a gephysicist.
Mre than 24,600 seamunts have been previusly mapped. One cmmn way f finding these hidden muntains is t send sund waves t the seaflr with snar. But that's an expensive and time-intensive prcess that requires a ship. “Only abut 20 percent f the cean has been mapped that way. There are a lt f gaps,” says a scientist, Julie Gevrgian.
S Gevrgian, Sandwell and their clleagues turned t satellite bservatins, which prvide glbal cverage f the wrld's ceans, t survey seamunts. The team examined in detail satellite measurements f the height f the sea surface. The researchers lked fr bumps(隆起) caused by the gravitatinal influence f a seamunt. Because rck is denser than water, the presence f a seamunt slightly changes the Earth's gravitatinal field at that spt. “There's an extra gravitatinal attractin. That causes water t pile up abve the seamunt,” Sandwell says.
Using that technique, the team sptted 19,325 previusly unknwn seamunts. Mst f the newly discvered underwater muntains are n the small side, estimated t be between rughly 700 and 2,500 meters tall.
Hwever, it's pssible that sme seamunts can cause a risk t sailrs when they' re shallw enugh t fall within the depth range f submarines(潜水艇). In 2021, a nuclear submarine ran int an uncharted seamunt. Cntinued scientific research is essential t prevent similar incidents in the future.
    32. Which factr mainly makes Mauna Kea a suitable habitat fr creatures?
    A. The stirring rds. B. The vlcanic activity.
    C. The human interference. D. The abundant fd surces.
    33. What is Gevrgian's attitude t using snar t find the hidden muntains?
    A. Cnfused. B. Cntradictry. C. Unsatisfied. D. Uncaring.
    34. Hw did the researchers find seamunts accrding t paragraph 4?
    A. By detecting sea surface height changes.
    B. By measuring ceanic gravitatinal fields.
    C. By bserving seamunts’ impact n water.
    D. By studying underwater muntain frmatins.
    35. Why is a nuclear submarine mentined in the last paragraph?
    A. T hnur the sailrs.
    B. T emphasize its value in the future.
    C. T highlight the significance f the research.
    D. T shw the exact depth f uncharted seamunt.
