T investigate this issue, Snja Utz at the University f Tübingen, Germany, and her clleagues asked abut 1,200 participants t search fr infrmatin using ne f the three tls. The first included text appearing letter by letter in the style f a large language mdel, similar t OpenAI’s ChatGPT; the secnd prvided infrmatin thrugh a vice-based device like Siri; and the third was a text-based cpy f Wikipedia.
In sme cases, participants were given accurate (准确的) infrmatin, while thers saw factual errrs, such as naming Sfia as the capital f Slvenia. Participants were asked t rate the accuracy, trustwrthiness, and believability f the infrmatin n a seven-pint scale, where 7 is entirely accurate. In the answers where errrs were intrduced, infrmatin presented in a text-based frm was rated as 4.24. The ChatGPT-like setup managed 4.76, while the vice assistant scred 5.29.
“It’s lng been understd that peple are easily cnvinced (确信) that bjects that display r mimic lifelike qualities are in fact alive,” says Mike Katell at the Alan Túring Institute, UK. “It’s nt surprising that peple find cnversatinal chat assistants mre cnvincing and reliable than text because humans seem t be used t see life where it desn’t exist and t give trust t things that seem lifelike.”
The way the chatbts and vice agents are prgrammed t use a friendly and helpful cnversatinal tne als cnfuses peple, says Katell. “The makers f chatbts aren’t necessarily trying t fl us, but they are trying t put users at ease. The gal f a large language mdel is’ seemingly reasnable’ and that is achieved thrugh believable cntent and a friendly delivery.”
Utz says it is imprtant t recgnize. that the presentatin f infrmatin can affect hw much we believe it. “Peple nw have learned that. these mdels hallucinate (产生幻觉) smetimes,” she says. “But what peple d nt knw yet is that just this interactin mde makes us mre likely t believe whatever is written there.”
