Namukbwa paused t permit the yunger wman Nzeyimana t answer. Nzeyimana, the visiting daughter f a frmer neighbur, replied ver and ver in the lcal Kirundi language.
A grup f neighburs watched in amazement. Many were seeing their first perfrmance f the traditinal frm f musical greeting, knwn t Burundians as akazehe. It is perfrmed nly by wmen n a range f ccasins.
Hwever, akazehe is disappearing, despite its unique status(地位)in this central African cuntry. That's accrding t cultural fficials, teachers and thers wh say it is wrth preserving. They mentined the threat frm public health measures that discurage unnecessary cntact during disease utbreaks, in additin t the perceived failure t prmte akazehe amng schl-ging yuth.
A custm such as akazehe shuld be preserved because f its rle in prtecting families, said Nikbiba, an anthrplgist(人类学家)in Bujumbura. Amng cmmunities that practise it, wmen culd tell elder wmen abut any prblems at hme. Nikbiba explained, "Nrmally, befre starting a hme in traditinal Burundi, the girl wuld first receive advice frm her father's sister. She wuld tell the girl, ‘I will cme t greet yu after a certain time.’" Such supprt frm elders wuld help them develp better mental health fr the yung family, he added.

The Malagasy babab trees, a typical feature f Madagascar's landscape, shuld have disappeared lng ag due t the extinctin f its frmer seed-distributing animals. Hwever, it did nt. Sehen Andriantsaralaza at the University f Antananariv in Madagascar and Onja Razafindratsima at the University f Califrnia, Berkeley, nw think they may knw the reasn.
Tgether with their clleagues, the scientists mnitred 15 trees t find new babab seed-di stributing animals in a western Madagascar regin. They als set up camera traps arund seed-cntaining fruits, and searched any faces(粪便)alng the way fr the presence f seeds.
They reprt in the jurnal Bitrpica that a native rat was caught n camera handling whle fruits n fur ccasins. Althugh there was n recrd f the rat breaking the fruits pen, the team fund 13 fruits that had been chewed int and had their seeds remved. Thugh the bite marks were nt clear enugh t identify a culprit(肇事者), this was clear evidence that a seed-distributing animal was ut there. They then fund cnvincing evidence: babab seeds in seven different piles f bush-pig faces.
The discvery is nt withut irny(讽刺). Scientists believe bush pigs were brught t Madagascar by humans smetime between 1,000 and 5,000 years ag, just as the frmer seed-distributing animals were ging extinct. Their arrival was a lucky break fr the bababs, especially as scientists have determined a seed's jurney thrugh the pig-like digestive system desn't reduce its ability t grw.
While the finding is imprtant in its wn right, it als prvides valuable evidence that intrduced species may nt be entirely harmful. Madagascar's pigs, fr example, thugh nt native, have made themselves essential t the survival f truly native species. Similar relatinships are suspected t hld in Suth America between rabbits native t Eurpe and plants with n seed distributrs. Fr Dr. Andriantsaralaza, that suggests the full eclgical rle f intrduced species shuld be cnsidered befre talk f extinctin begins.

C.Preserving the landscape f Madagascar.D.Investigating hw animals distribute seeds.
9.What led the scientists t identify the real culprit?
A.The clear bite marks n the fruits.B.The number f fruits brken pen.
C.Where the remved babab seeds lay.D.Hw a native rat handled whle fruits.
10.What is the writer's attitude twards intrduced species?
A.Dismissive.B.Cnventinal.
C.Enthusiastic.D.Fair.
11.Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A.Species Savers: Malagasy Bush PigsB.Seed Distributrs: Malagasy Bababs
C.Eclgical Rle f Seed-cntaining FruitsD.Disappearance f Seed-distributing Animals
Mst peple in the Netherlands are cnvinced that their cnsumptin patterns affect the envirnment. Many f them are lking fr ways t reduce their ftprint. Hwever, the reality is mre cmplicated, accrding t a research by Leiden PhD candidate Levn Amatuni, wh studied car sharing and the reuse f phnes. He used his backgrund in cmputer science and mathematics t mdel and measure the benefits f such practices.
His research shws users f car-sharing platfrms reduce their impact by nly 3 t 18 percent—much less than 51 r 37 percent claimed in previus research. This is caused by s-called "rebund effects", which are rarely accunted fr by cmpanies r even researchers.
Fr example, shared vehicles are replaced with new mdels mre frequently than private cars. Additinally, the intrductin f sharing schemes(方案)can encurage peple t drive when they wuld have therwise taken public transprt. These rebund effects turn ut t be highly influential. Amatuni als fund users f sharing platfrms dn't significantly reduce their driving. "And if they d, they ften take buses and trains, which aren't emissin-free, "he says. While public transprt is usually a better ptin, its impact is nt negligible. S, this data must be included t make an accurate assessment.
Similarly, Amatuni discvered that a secnd-hand phne nly ffsets(抵消)abut ne-third f a new phne's prductin. Rebund effects are the cause. If peple culdn't sell their ld devices, they wuld use them fr lnger.
In ther wrds, reuse bth extends the lifetime f a device—by giving it a new wner—but als shrtens it, as peple tend t sell their newly bught devices sner.
Amatuni desn't want peple t cnclude taking small steps twards sustainability is pintless. "Our intentins are still what's mst imprtant," he says, "but meanwhile, peple need t realise there're n easy fixes." He recmmends priritising verall cnsumptin reductin rather than cntinuing current habits while trying t make them mre efficient.
12.What is the fcus f Amatuni's research?
A.The ways f reducing peple's ftprint.
B.The benefits f car sharing and phne reuse.
C.The damage f public transprt t the envirnment.
D.The knwledge f cmputer science and mathematics.

C.Direct.D.Immediate.
14.Which f the fllwing represents a phne rebund effect?
A.Buying new phnes ften.B.Keeping ld phnes in use.
C.Taking care f new phnes.D.Selling used phnes cheaply.
15.What is Amatuni's suggestin n prmting sustainability?
A.Stp ec-friendly habits.B.Increase prductin efficiency.
C.Reduce ttal resurce use.D.Seek easy slutins t ec-crisis.
With travel n the rise, mre families are planning t take their hme life n the rad, whether it's fr a weekend r a lnger trip. Traveling with kids can be stressful—with all thse suitcases and cries f "Are we there yet?" 16
Invlving yung children in planning a trip might sund silly, but it's far mre valuable than it seems. "Yu shuldn't expect a 4-year-ld t spend eight hurs in museums," says Waldn, a family travel expert. "It's really smart fr parents t think like their kid and realize, ‘ 17 ’” That attitude helps parents avid terrible situatins that may ruin the day.
18 If a little ne is int dinsaurs, perhaps yu'll want t check ut a city's Natural Histry Museum. If they lve animals, maybe there's a way t include a visit t a farm r an aquarium(水族馆).
One f Waldn's favurite ways t get yunger kids excited abut a trip is reading. "Bks are perfect fr little armchair travellers," she says. " 19 " Befre a recent trip t Puert Ric, Waldn read her kids a bk abut a frg native t the island. Afterwards, her daughters gt really excited t hear this little frg singing at night.
Peple ften think the trip is ging t be ne Instagram wrthy mment after anther, but that never happens. 20 When kids are invlved, they can becme invested in getting thrugh thse prblems. They als learn t wrk things ut tgether as a family.
A.Mst children really enjy challenges.
B.Actually, n family trip ges withut prblems.

G.Parents can als play int their kids' interests when planning a trip.
